Spoke with the Assistant service manager today where I bought my bike regarding 5th gear noise as I'm coming up on the 1000 service. He stated that they put in Belray 80/140 trans fluid and it clears it right up - no big deal $300 for the service. He stated most of the people at the deaership use Bleray. I asked about Redline and he said he never heard of it???
Called another dealer - actually closer to the house - they stated they just put in the regular HD fluids as HD hasn't authorized anything else? He did state that there is a whine in 5th but nothing to worry about - $250 for 1000 mile service
I'll be going to the dealer I bought my bike - they at least acknowledge they have a small clue - what about the other fluids - waht else can help the 5th gear issues. Is Belray a good solutiion. Can I bring my own (Redline)? What else should I get done or ask them.

Thnakns for the help.
I added Red Line Shock Proof Heavy in my trans and it resulted in a quieter 5th gear. The whine is still there but not as bad. Between that, and a little more volume on the radio, the problem is solved.
Redline is a good choice for the tranny. Use the heavy shockproof stuff - about $10 a quart - you'll only need 1/2 that - enough for another change in a year.
Unfortunately, it happens all the time. Even with dealers that stock Redline on the shelf the service writers don't know anything about it. Now if they at least admitted they just didn't know anything about it, that would be one thing. But when you know they've never heard of it and then start with the, "no way I'd recommend putting that in" crap and you ask then why do they have it on their shelf and sell it,. you get the typical blank stare followed by the, "well, we only use HD fluids". Typical brain dead service writer. Maybe when Jiffy Lubes starts hiring again, they can get their old jobs back.

I would be concerned about a service writer that didn't know of a specific type of fluid that is common knowledge. JMO
Just had my 1000 done , so far no 5th gear whine or any other issues , the heat thing calmed down after SERT was installed along with the 103. I switch to SYN 3 which I've used on my last 2 HD's .

Hey Ted - You sure on that half quart for the tranny? My service manual for my '07 RG states 32oz for the tranny. Last time I checked, that was a full quart.
