I sometimes carry a Springfield XD9 and have a permit. Around here carrying just keeps you 'even' with everyone else.

This all reminds me of a lesson I learned when I was about 16 working at a vets office.  Doc told me that if someone ever robbed the place and our lives were really threatened, if I could, I should get to his briefcase where his gun was and shoot them until I was sure they were dead.  Then he told me, "Tell the police that you were defending yourself and wait for your lawyer."  The moral of the story is, you don't shoot someone unless you are in so much danger that it warrants killing them.  I don't take the idea of killing someone lightly, so it would have to be a really bad situation to use my gun.
If you've hung out in bad neighborhoods all your life with nothing ever happening, then you've been lucky.  Being alert helps a lot, but you just never know what could happen.  I say be prepared for as much as possible and then do everything possible to avoid it.  The person that you could get in a fist fight with is not the same person that you would have to shoot.  A smart gun owner will avoid confrontation whenever possible.  Also, carriers don't "look like John Wayne" because the whole idea is that your gun has to be hidden!  I don't even carry on my bike because I don't have a permit, but I fully plan on getting one.  I've been in a life or death situation before and I only made it out by a miracle.  I don't ever want to be in that situation again unarmed.  I'd at least want a fighting chance against someone who would try to kill me.

I'm curious if anyone knows how the law works for traveling in Texas?  I don't have a CHL yet, but I'd like to be able to carry my handgun when I travel this summer.  I've been told it is legal to have it in your car, but how about in a bag or toolbox on your bike?  Also, how about if I want to travel into LA, NM, or CO?

Going to sleep before you say something stupid... well you may have missed the boat on that one, sir.

Lets get a few things straight for you, and anyone agreeing with your posts.

It's not about looking like John Wayne.  It's not about being a pu$$y.  It has nothing to do with being able to take a punch.  It’s got nothin’ to do with “being man enough”…

The fact is there are many armed assaults, armed robberies, murders, rapes, beatings, and many other violent encounters all across this nation every second.  Not all of these crimes are committed against the Chuck Norris's of this nation.  A number of these crimes are committed against those who are deemed by criminals to be easier targets such as women, the elderly, children, the physicall un-fit, the handicap…etc.

The issue is not if the victims of these crimes aren’t “man enough” as you put it.  The issue is that in a majority of cases people (from all catagories) are grossly unprepared for the robbery, the rape, the murder, the beating... etc.   From the tough guy who thinks his own self-image is enough to take down any assailant, to the elderly lady that thinks the world is full of good wholesome people.  Many of them just don’t prepare, period.

People take precautions in most every other facet of their lives.  They have insurances of all kinds, they have fire extinguishers in their home, the wear seatbelts, and they visit the doctor regularly for check-ups... I could go on forever.  But interestingly enough people often neglect to consider the very real potential that they may become the victim of a serious violent crime resulting in great bodily injury or death, and thus they do not prepare for threat.

Doesn't make much sense, does it?  Preparing for all of this other stuff on the off chance that it might happen, yet not giving even the slightest consideration to their own personal safety with regard to other people who may choose to do them harm.

I suppose their belief in 911, or their belief that they are direct descendents of Chuck Norris, allows them the comfort of walking through life assuming they’ve got it covered.

There is another group of people - the group you've taken issue with in this thread - who believe there is a chance that one day they may be the victims of a violent, and so they prepare.

In some cases preparation takes the form of self-defense training.&nb

I do carry off duty a high percentile due to my job. If I was not employed as a law enforcement officer, I for see no reason to carry a handgun.

The reason this post is so mind-bogglingly inane is because this officer carries a gun to protect himself from the same criminals that prey upon us lowly citizens.  But he forsees no reason why you need a gun!  If it wasn't so retarded it might be humorous.

I carry everywhere but the Bank, the Bar, and the Brothel - always - everyday - open and in plain view; it's my right as I'm an American Citizen. Now thats not to say its at home when I go to the bank, just can't bring it in the bank. I do not have any type of government permits, I'm already permitted by the US Constitution. Fortunately here in Louisiana our government has not circumvented the constitution like New York and Chicago has and honestly I don't believe the citizens here would allow it, thats why I live here.
As far as the person calling us gun toting maniacs and a pu$$y, what do you think your wife and daughter are going to call you when a crackhead takes their money and rapes them just for $$hits and giggles? Do you live in a box? You know things like that do happen in this world - I for one will protect my family by any means necessary.

I live in NM and it is legal to carry in or on a vehicle without a permit. If pulled over, I just tell the cop, and they have no problem telling me to keep my hands away from the area. Also, if asked to dismount by a cop, it is still legal to have it concealed. So, I carry. I love my bike, but I don't carry it to keep someone from stealing my bike, I have insurance. I don't carry it to fend off someone trying to fight with me, I am 6'1" and weigh 350lbs ( I have no problem defending myself). I normally only carry when the wife rides with me. Why then do I carry? I saw a movie (granted not real life, but who knows what can happen). I think it was 'Vanished'? With Kurt Russell. Anyways, the guys wife disappears when they are on a road trip. He confronts the kidnapper...anyways, to make a long story short. If he had been carring a gun, the story would not have been as long. My point is, you never know. I actually enjoy a good fight. Heck, I don't even get mad during them, anymore. But we are not talking a fight. I am talking an @ss with a gun trying to harm my family. And to quote another good movie..."I don't want to get killed for lack of shooting back."

I carry a .38 derringer in my right boot.

Never less than .380 APC (Fed. Personal Defense, 6+1) supplimented in winter by adding a 9mm (Win Ranger +P+, 15+1).  Yep, there's some crime going on and neither my wife nor I (or any other good citizen) deserve to be shot by some crack-head punk using a stolen gun to rob some Burger King we might be eating at when we're over in Orlando.

I carry on road trips, on my bike or in my cage. 380 on the bike or 45 ACP in the cage. Better to have it and never need it then not have it and die.

Been around guns all my life, damaged hearing to prove it.  Damn good shot, including moving targets.  Cowboy/farmer in my younger days. Not anti-gun, more anti-stupidity.

I don't know.  If I was really worried about (my family) being confronted by a crack head, I'd see to it they don't present themselves in places where a crack head has access to them.   Rather than count on reenacting the O.K. Coral, if one did show up.

I just have no interest in trying to explain why some idiot is lyin' dead in the street and I'm holding a gun, legal or otherwise.

I don't know any crack head that can go faster than my bike (on foot or otherwise), or remain standing after a good high speed pass.

I feel safe enough with a couple of chains on, a good knife and a loud, powerful motorbike.  If that won't do it, I'm someplace I don't need to be, anyways.

And, if someone thinks, well just what if one person had popped up at VT and mowed the Psycho down.  That would require a large part of the populace to be armed at all times and in all places.

Personally, I can't think of many places scarier than standing around a group of trained, armed 'soldiers' with rounds chambered and safties off. We all know about the Friendly Fire episodes from 'nam and I-Wreck.  What we don't know is how many 'accidental' deaths occurred in either place.  But, undoubtedly, more than a couple.  Out of my HS class of 50, 1 is dead from a gun accident.  Another schoolmate crippled for life.  Myself, suffered a minor gunshot wound inflicted by a 'friend' while hunting (not Cheney).

So, if you think I'm gonna feel any safer wandering around the Mall, the Town Square, at a concert or in a line of PO'd drivers at a stop light knowing that over half of them are armed, most are untrained and essentially none have experience looking down the barrel at another homo sapiens,  YOU ARE CRAZY.

Live in Idaho, lower crime rate, easy to get a CCW. Lived in So Cal, much higher crime rate, and virtually impossible to get a CCW. Carried in both states, legal in one. You shoot someone for what you consider a justified reason, you had better have a damn good reason for soing so, because you are going to be investigated for "just cause" in discharging your firearm. Guilty until proven innocent in that matter. A guy up here just shot a 17 yr old in the knees for trying to steal his truck (with a shotgun), he's got problems. They are now looking into this case for excessive force, he wasn't threatened, just didn't want them taking his property.

That being said, I am comfortable in carrying and using my judgement in when it is absolutely necessary to bring it out. Really, really hope I never have to use it, but if I do, I'll do so in the knowledge that there was no other recourse (including running away!). That's not being a "pu$$y, that's just exercising common sense. Being a victim sucks, but you MUST use all other means to avoid the situation to prove your reasoning.

.380 Walther PPK (small frame, fits great) on the bike, P220 Sig otherwise.

I carry all the time. S&W Mdl. 640 .38 Spl. Airweight Body Guard, Craig Spegal custom grips, Cor-Bon ammo, and one speed-loader reload. Just enough to get me out of trouble. If I know I'm going into a serious social engagement, then it's my Bush Master M-4'gery, several magazines, my Novak custom Browning Hi-Power with several more magazines of Cor-Bon ammo. Of course, I try to avoid such encounters at all costs. JMHO, YMMV.

jackyl...Well isn't that nice. I'm glad we live in a country where you have the choice. I am also a fairly large guy, 6-ft, 285-lbs and am quite proficient in several Martial Arts besides firearms, quite frankly, I can take care of myself. Am I a ****? Well, I am what I eat.

I carry a firearm just in case I am confronted with a situation where I, or a loved one, are in mortal fear of our lives or a forceable felony is being committed in my prescence. This is the text book definition for use of deadly force (at least in FL). I understand the tremendous responsibility involved in carrying a conceiled weapon and I accept it. I also respect the fact that you do not choose to do so. It's your choice. However, there is case law that went to the Supreme Court several years ago regarding the responsibility of Law Enforcement to protect you from harm as an individual. The situation was, a person new he was in danger of being killed and went to LE for protection. They informed him until a crime is committed they could do nothing for him. As he predicted, he was killed in a violent manner and his family sued in the courts, eventually getting to the Supreme Court.  In a nutshell, the ruling came down from the Supreme's that no LE agency is responsible for protecting your individual life, they are empowered to enforce the laws and that's it. Ask most LE and they'll tell you they usually arrive after the crime has been committed. So, if you thought that the LE community are there to "Serve and Protect" your little hide, you are mistaken. You are responsible for your own life and it's protection. Most enlightened LE officers want honest, law abiding citizens to be armed. They realize if they get into trouble they can count on an honest citizen to assist them. Those LE officers who do not think this way, have the "us and them
(civilians)" mentality are dangerous and shouldn't be "on the Job". JMHO, YMMV.

I carry a RUGER P90 in 45ACP. I also have my CCW, It's on my person always. I use a clip draw mounted to it & just have it stuck it my jeans with a cover shirt over it. People don't know  I'm carrying and they don't need to know. My wife also carries, her perffered wepon is a Springfield armory XD-sub compact 40 S&W. She has a consilment Purce. Again No on needs to know you carry. & you hope you hever have to use it..
Having a gun & never having to use it is better then not having one & needing it.

I, never in my life, have (or would) voluntarily enter a 'social' situation that required me to carry semi-auto sidearms, complete with multiple clips.  That sounds like a place any law abiding individual should avoid at any cost.

And, as far as my comments about even being around armed (and more or less untrained) individuals not necessarily cognizant of the consequences of pulling the trigger on their smokewagons:

I now understand, better, why it is I've always preferred to ride alone.

With as fast as your temper got to name calling in this thread I can understand why you leave your guns at home. It is probably best for you... and everyone else.
First off you dont have to or need to carry a gun while on your bike. It is my right, your right (although you dont like your rights) and everyone elses on this board right... unless you live in Ca, NJ, NY or Mass. I think those are the worst states.. :)
No one is goin to take it from you while riding. Just not going to happen. you dont have it to shoot at a cager, that shows your intelligence level. It is for self protection against the possible car jacker, theif, crook, murderer, child abductor or any other criminal that it is possible you come across.

Man enough? Makes you a man fighting? I sure thought so when I was younger. Good thing I never ended up with a felony over any of it. When I was 18 someone kept getting on my nerves and instead of walking away I dropped him, his buddy, and his other buddy. Ended up in jail with a class 3 felony for aggravted assault. Luckly it was reduced to a missdimeanor and only recieved unsupervised probation. Did nto loose any rights that would take away my gun priveledges. Doesnt take a "man" to take careof business. What are you goi to do when you get ina  confrontation that you try walking away from? the guy insists, pulls out a gun... Wait, Wait, Wait.. your super citizen. You are going to do a round house judo chop kick the gun out of his hand and it will land right in yours............only in Hollywood.

Hundreds of people carjacked EVERYDAY yes, EVERYDAY will all say..... " I have never been car jacked before" do you think the car jackers look and go, "this AZZ hole looks like he is a habitual car jacking victim, better get him" NO thats stupid, millions of people thousands of car jacking every year your chances are pretty good it will not happen to you... BUT if it did.. what could YOU do? look at the citizen next to you hoping he got up, got dressed and excersized his 2nd amendment right that morning? do you hope that cop will find you if you are taken hostage during this car jacking? Oh wait your Jackyl BAD AZZ. You will gladly get in the back seat, wait till he starts driving, knock him over the back of the head with your foot that you were able to swing up and over the seat while climbing intot the front seat to open the car door and shove him out.... how I wish I could be Jackyl BAD AZZ!

When I carry I do not look like
