For you carriers who carry on your person, a question.  You're in line at a fast food joint, the guy in front of you pulls a gun on the teller and demands the cash.  What do you do?

Get as much information as you can.  height, weight, build, color, clothing ,tags if he get in a car and maybe a cell phone pic if i have the opportunity.  Give all this information to the police when they arrive.  chances are if this happens the guy is to stupid to stay out of jail.  this is what we pay the police for.  this is an example of the training most of us receive in cwp classes.  not to mention the common sense aspect of it.  It is only money and money can be replaced.

quote:

Next question, guy turns around and points the gun at you, what do you do?

troutspinner

11 years military and I will be the first to tell you I DO NOT WANT TO SHOT ANYONE.  BUT, I pop a cap in his azz first chance I get.  (Triple tap.  Two to the chest, one to the head.)  Again, going back to the training.  If my life is in mortal danger I have the right and the ability to make a difference.  If someone else's life is in mortal danger I also have the duty to make a difference.  These two questions are like comparing apples to oranges though.

Now let me ask you a question, if this same person turns around and puts a gun in your face and you have NO weapon AND this person has shown that he has the propensity for violence, what do you do other than piss your pants?

As most people would agree here.  None of us are John Wayne and NONE of us go out looking for trouble.  WE just make sure we are ready should trouble find us.  All the years I have carried, I have never had to pull or even show.  I would very much like to keep it that way too.

LOL!  That reminds me of the scene with the sword fighter in the movie Indiana Jones...Old school fighting only "works" if both sides follow the same rules.

I agree in "Old School" back in the day it settled most everything that got that far. But the SCUM  these days have no clue what old school means. Heck even kids on the playground use weapons these days.
Ive heard "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight" Bet bringing Fists would even be a bigger mistake.

I have many guns....I carry all the time....mostly my Bulgarian 9mm Makarov.....that's a heck of a gun!!

Grunt66....what planet to you work on that all the bad guys are on while you're on duty?  Tell us so we can all not go there.   Must not be planet earth.

Look guys and girls.....a gun is a tool, no different than a hammer or a screwdriver.....you can kill someone with any of the three.....the difference is how you use it as opposed to how it is intended to be used.  A gun has never killed anyone....not one person has ever EVER been killed by a gun.  On the other hand, a person can kill other people....sometimes they misuse a tool called a gun to do it.... but a gun is a piece of metal and can't actually harm anyone.  I know someone that was stabbed with a screwdriver once...thankfully he lived.  But by some of the flawed logic I've seen on here, because someone can be stabbed with a screwdriver that means you can't carry screwdrivers on your motorcycle, right?  No hammers in your tool box fellas, you might kill someone with it....  See how silly that sounds?

As Archie Bunker once said....."Would it make you happier if they was pushed out a window?"

"There are 3 reasons to carry a gun.....to protect your family from predators, to hunt and kill delicious animals and eat them, and to keep the King of England out of your face!"  Krusty the Clown, The Simpsons.  =-)

Perhaps some of this has to do with what type of riding you do.  There is a differance between a solo around town looking cool and 2-up for 3-4 day runs cross country where you can end up in some hole in the wall camping or hotel settings.  I'd hate to use it and like others have said it is a huge responsibility having a load weapon, but likewise is the obligation to protect yourself and family.  Because other do carry guns, some of them bad wolves might think twice, and to those carrying  -- I think you for that.  One thing forsure is that you just don't know if I'm carrying or not.  That is why it is a concealed, last resort and final (in all sence of the word) option.

I don't want or plan on any trouble but if I do run into a situation where I am in danger or my wife I'll cap the bastard w/o any problem. I've never had any help from LEO anyway and they just don't seem to be around when you need one. Our city just hired a police force and they are spread very thin. My 2 cents =)

In Texas, out in the boonies where I live,  they're quite understanding about carrying guns.  I pack my 1937 S&W 45 in case of a breakdown and visits by critters intent on harm.  I've had to dispatch a deer hit by my PU truck. Don't usually carry too far outside my county and for sure not in the big city.  No CWP.

Way back when I was a kid of 19 or so I worked at a gas station (SOHIO) in a less than desirable part of town. Like in , the ghetto. In 11 months we were robbed 7 or 8 times. Two of those times I was the victim. I even had a Toledo police officer tell us that SOHIO should let us carry guns, shoot the bastards and drag them to the curb for the city to pick up.

Now that Ohio has adopted a CCW law I am licensed and carry a SS 1911 in.45cal.

People that believe in "gun control" need to remember this definition.

Gun Control- The idea that the woman found raped and strangled in the alley is somehow morally superior to the woman explaining to the police how her attacker got the fatal bullet wounds.

I, never in my life, have (or would) voluntarily enter a 'social' situation that required me to carry semi-auto sidearms, complete with multiple clips.  That sounds like a place any law abiding individual should avoid at any cost.

Unfortunately the criminal element decides when, where, and how they will commit their assaults against the general public.  They have the element of surprise.  They initiate the entire event.  You have no input whatsoever.

I will agree that one can lessen the likelihood of coming into contact with unsavory characters by steering clear of bad areas, but I also realize that bad people do not commit all of their crimes in what you or I would consider bad places.  Watching the news confirms this reality.

Fact:  You may lessen the probability, but it is unfeasible to do away with the possibility.

Essentially, you float around in this society susceptible to victimization whether you like it or not, just like the rest of us.

Simply deciding you'll not voluntarily enter this or that social situation, and implying that this practice alone ensures your safety, is about as naive a belief as I can fathom.

This is all about odds.  We all assess the odds of safety differently, and we all have our own level of comfort when it comes to how we gamble with those odds.

While I do what I can to lessen the odds that something bad will happen to me or my family, I do not feel so good about betting my life/safety, or that of a loved one, on those same odds.  That whole Murphy's Law thing is a real b!tch.

So while it’s fun to assume carrying firearms for protection is a libido thing, a redneck thing, or only for pu$$ies, these are simply ad hominem motives assigned to gun-toters by those who refuse, or unable to understand the true motive behind wanting effective protection available should something bad go down.

I have a Florda Concealed Wepons permit and always at least carry a knife.  My Employer doesn't allow private guns on property.  When I carry a gun it's a Ruger 345.  I also teach the Concealed Carry class along with several othe courses in Firearm Satey and Usage.  NRA certified.

Great response.  It is not your duty to get involved with your gun, in situations like that there is usually more harm done.

quote:

Now let me ask you a question, if this same person turns around and puts a gun in your face and you have NO weapon AND this person has shown that he has the propensity for violence, what do you do other than piss your pants?

How does he show the violence?  Only shooting a previous victim would establish that mortal situation.  If it's in my face, regardless of if I had a weapon or not, the time spent getting a gun out would be better spent disarming him because by time I got the gun out, I'm dead.

We could theorize this situation to no end, which is why I asked the question but until the situation actually occurs you would never know.  Now go back to the odds, perfect place, perfect time, perfect situation, perfect response.  The first two could happen, odds are still low, factor in the rest of the odds and you executing your right correctly, it hardly happens.  Still the response by carriers will be, I'd rather have my gun and I agree but I fear the day CCW Johnny does and wants to help, bullets will fly everywhere, innocent people will get hurt if not killed.

For the record, in my previous post I stated that I do have a license to carry in Pa, I am not a gun opponent but love this topic because it brings out the flames in people.  I think many people confuse any subject about guns with Big Brother trying to disarm them and that passion flows at the drop of a hat.

One last thing for the record, I have had a gun pulled on me, it was about 20 years ago when I was in my teens.  I got into an arguement with a guy much older than me, mouthed off to him, he walked back to his car and pulled the gun out from under the seat.  I dodged between parked cars then ran.  I later found out it was a BB gun ;) but at the time, who knew, I think I made the right decision.  Just think if I was armed and opted to pull my gun, I would have taken a few bb's, he would be dead.  I'd either be in jail or in the poor house for defending my actions and at the very least a questionable character in the eyes of the public for the rest of my life which would have most likely affected the success I currently enjoy in my life.

I am a disability retired LEO. Retired due to gunshot wounds to the legs.
I was shot at the local hospital in the ER parking lot. Bad neighborhood concern is a joke.
I can carry all 50 states without regard to any state or local laws due to federal law for retired LEO's
I also have the FL permit. I will get others. Can't have too many or be too prepared.
I have a one million umbrella liability insurance policy, for protection "after"

Do I carry?  Da..........................................

I usually have my Kimber 1911 CDP with me whether I am riding or not. Sometimes I like to carry a backup (SP101 or Sig P232). I never want to shoot anyone... but if faced with a choice, I choose not to be a victim. I would rather live than be like the criminal lying in a pool of blood.

Imagine for a moment you carry. Same situation discussed here, you are behind the guy robbing the fast food joint or bank. You got your gun, but decide not to use it. Criminal shoots and kills 1 person. How do you feel now? You had the power and did nothing. You took the responsibility to carry yet did not fulfill your responsibility to protect innocent people. Now another gets shot, do u act then. Now you get a pistol turned on you...now do you shoot? By that time its too late.

I would not be able to live with myself if I had the ability to save a life and chose not to act. So if you dont agree with ccw, thats ok. What I find disturbing is when activists choose not to carry, but infringe on my rights to protect myselg from being a victim by advocating gun controls.

Its sad, we live in a society that just doesnt care anymore about anything but themselves. Look at the news lately...we have 3 elderly people beaten up and robbed by thugs because they were vulnerable. Last month in detroit, a 91 year old man was beaten to a pulp, and bystanders stood by and did NOTHING. Well....I was pissed, I told everyone at work my speech: We are responsible to weed the wretches of society out, the young, elderly and women, get robbed, beaten, and raped because they are the most vunerable. I told everyone, I am dying for some a-hole to try something on an elderly man because the crook thinks the elderly man is vulnerable. Well... I got my wish. SOBs were robbing a subway in Plantation, FL when they turned to a customer (72 yrs old) to assult him. He place two nice shots. One in the head of one punk, and the other in the chest of another. He is touted as a hero by the community, EVEN by the NEWS MEDIA! can you believe it.

Anyhow, we need more people like that. We need to take this country back. Terrorists, criminals, all f-ers preying on the lambs of society. Well, it has to stop! And there are not enough authority to control it.

As a former LEO I only had one time, that in my mind I was justified in shooting someone.  I was sure this guy was pointing a nickel plated weapon at me while I was working undercover.  It was night the street light didn't provide enough light but I was sure he had me "dead to right".  I hesitated and did not draw and fire.  It turned out to be a chrome platted smoking pipe, not a gun.  I have thought about that many times with mixed emotions.  I could have killed him and I think I would have been able to sleep at night.  . Some fellow officers feel that I should have shot being that sure he had a gun.  But I thank God I didn't.

At the Law enforcement academy we were taught that it was " better to be tried by 12, than carried by 6".  Cute saying for us rookie cops but after the threat is gone you still have to live with that. Killing someone, justified or not is a life long decision. I can tell you this, I carry  not to stop the guy that steals my bike or the guy robbing the Mcdonalds of their money.  No court in the land will uphold a killing for personal property.  Everyday some poor bastard who was just protecting his property is found guilty of some lesser charge but he is normally always found guilty.

I carry to protect my wife and myself from bodily harm, for when you try to force me and my wife in the freezer or back room at the Mcdonalds.  Thats is when you will be made aware of my S&W  . 357 bodyguard.    Not before then.  I will remember my training and kill you.  I will suffer whatever consequence my peers in society give me.  I will not bragg nor be proud of what I did.  You will be just as dead either way.
I close with saying it is our right to keep and bear arms.  I am sure that LEO's that have been involved in a shooting incident, wish that it never happened period.  But if it must I prefer you be dead instead of me or my family.

Walther P4 the car. Colt .357 in the bike.  And California has more A-weapon owners than any other state in the country, BTW.

I have to agree with jackyl on his comment. Myself, I am a retired Marine and work full time as a law enforcement officer. Carrying a handgun can be a real burden all of the time. I have lived in some bad areas, the first being Baltimore City Maryland. I am 41 years of age and have never had a bad encounter while riding. I have driven through Washington DC and had no troubles. Now I live and work in San Diego County California. I live outside the jurisdiction that I live in so that I reduce the possibility of running into any of the PAL’s  (Parole’s at Large) that I have arrested. I have ridden in various bad parts of Los Angeles and San Diego, granted I try to stay out of these areas to prevent any possibility of an altercation.

I do carry off duty a high percentile due to my job. If I was not employed as a law enforcement officer, I for see no reason to carry a handgun. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that you should not carry a concealed weapon but there is a tremendous responsibility that comes with carrying a loaded handgun.
I could go on and on and I will stop at this point but in closing I must say that if riding requires carrying a loaded handgun, myself I would seriously consider not riding anymore.

Read the bold section of my post. I have no problem with anyone carrying a handgun.
