To this point in my life, I've tried to wear the Armor of God, and I trust in Him to protect me (really), so I dont' carry a gun when I ride, or otherwise.  That being said,  I could understand if you ride through long stretches of isolated territory (its not like that in my area of the country) it might be a wise thing to do and I would consider it.  (Given the number of positive responses to this thread question, perhaps I should consider it! )

Vegashd, are you saying that since God gave mankind the knowledge to make and perfect weapons, He must agree that it is okay to use them to defend ourselves.  Sounds good to me.

I can't recall ever needing a gun, but who knows what the future holds.  I can't decide, do I pack the Springfield Armory 1911 .45 or do I pack the Ruger p85 9mm?  And where do I place it.  I saw the other pics, but I'd like a place that conceals the weapon, don't want to freak out some old lady.  Maybe I can rig something up in the sidecar.

That reminds me.  I was at the jail here in Columbus, when a biker walked in, handed a gun and holster to the guard saying "I was afraid to leave this on the bike.  Will you watch it for me?"  I watched as the guard took the weapon, saying "Sure".  And that was that.

Retired LEO with almost 30 years combined military and civilian Law Enforcement experience. I am covered by the Federal CCW law and have the Ohio Permit as well.  I was happy to retire without ever having had to shoot someone.

Based on my experience I think everyone who can pass a background check and a training session should be permitted to carry concealed. People need to be able to defend themselves because, as much as we would like to, there just aren't enough Cops to do it.

I have a collection of firearms, to include a vintage .45 cal Thompson my father in law gave me (yes, I have a tax stamp.) I'm a card carrying member of the NRA..

I carry a .32 Seecamp that fits nicely in a front pocket, a S&W Chief that I have carried for 25 years when I feel the need for something a little bigger, and a Sig 226 (my retired duty weapon) for when I travel. There is seldom a time, outside my home, when I am not armed.

Guess that makes me a pu$$ie...

Are you tellin me God does not approve of weapons?

Who is to say that God would not say you Frickin idiot i provided you in a rea that was legal to carry a weapon, sent hundreds of people to tell you to carry one and you still thought I would save you.... I tried... i sent 100 men to tell you to get a gun. And you then decided to puff your chest with my armor and take a bullet as I would save you then?????

Yeah, this topic always gets a raise on this forum. I think the "haters" feel they have the need to school gun carriers. As if they needed educating. It's almost like religion shoving. The states that have the CCW (or what ever your states Concealed intitials are) should be congratulated. Alot of states think that officials have a grip on crime, I guess. What a grand misconception!!

Growing up in the South Bronx, as a Puerto Rican "hoodlum".. I was never promised tomorrow. It didn't help that I was involved in all the negatives you can possibly think of. There was a time when you could get your respect (wich was a key factor in my neighborhood in the Bronx) by throwing blows. I have duked it out with the best of them. I almost had too because of my height. I have always been shorter than average, hence the constant need for others to test me. When guns started becoming part of every battle, I hated it. I didn't like the fact that a little issue like a girlfriend could get you buried 6 foot under. It was insane. And yet... here I was testing my fate by robbing people for sh!t as stupid as a baseball cap or a particular goose down coat. If you where recognized as a person from another "posse" or block, it was on. If someone scuffed your new kicks.. you better get ready for fisticuffs... I know I have sinned in my time and I will pay for this when I am put in front of God, my only judge. All of this rambling is just to express the fact that "tomorrow" was a golden thing, when I was growing up. Now that I have a family, moved out of NY, persued an education, hold a very good paying and steady "career" job.. I demand my chance at a decent life. I am lucky enough to live in a state where I have a little more control over my fate. I would hate to have survived the hurdles of my youth and all to die at the hand of some cracked up junkie looking for another f'kn fix.

God knows I have done plenty to have to pay for. The last thing I want to do is take anyone elses life. I don't look for trouble. I am friendly to everyone I meet. I have great things to loose today. I won't risk it. But I'll tell you this... I will defend the remainder of my life on this planet to no end. I refuse to give the scum an upper hand on me, anymore. Even more so, evil toward my family. I will crush it with no thought. Be it right or wrong... that is my take.

God bless fellas.

Excuse the typos.. to much sh!t to proof read.

Actually a lot of times a cw can just aggravate a situation.
And so many people that THINK they know WHEN and HOW to use a gun
when they really don't get themselves in more hot water then they were before they pulled.
Between shooting themselves, innocents (most people in a panic situation couldn't hit broad side of a barn from inside the barn). And when is it self defense and not is different in different states and towns. Just more legal liability than I care to deal with.
I try to stay away from places I could conceivably have a problem in.
even though trouble can come at you anytime and place.
When I do carry, it's unloaded and in the tour pack. Mostly for when I'm in a motel room or such and somebody tries to break in.
Then I shoot the mattress (no richochet or passing through thin walls) noise usually scares them off. And morally I feel better for shooting the mattress instead of another person when it was avoidable by doing so.
Only had it happen once in over 30 years of being out and on my own.

I wonder how many of those 30 kids who were just MURDERED at that University would have liked to have been carring a pistol that day??
And, the cops surrounded the place,   BUT they did not go in and stop the killer did they?
But then I guess they didn't have any real men to just walk right thru that hail of bullets and just punch  him out and put an end to the bloodshed, yea right!!

I would like to see the data you pull your statement from.  Statistically speaking in states where CWP licenses have been enacted a reduction in violent crime has occured.  Here is just one source for my point.  http://www.scfirearms.org/Legislative/letter_to_Talley_subcom_3964.pdf

Ignorant statements like this is what perpetuates the idea that we are all lunatics that can't wait to pull our guns.  Again, if you are going to make bold statements like this, back it up with fact.

Secondly, why did you discharge your weapon.  Seems to me by your own admission you put more people in danger in that one incident that I have in the years I have been a licensed carrier.

Silly, you are not short.  maybe a little vertically challenged, but not short.

can you give me an example where a legal CW holder aggravated the situation?

shooting a matress? must noe be CW holder, no CW I have EVER met would do something stupid like that.

lol... cmon guys! choochoo knows what he is talking about and we are nothing but simpletons with no capacity to judge situations and act accordingly. I'm going to start carrying a mattress around. Well.. maybe not. I imagine eventualy this will bring out the Mattress Rights Association and they'll too jump on the "we are incompetent to make intellegent decisions" band wagon. wtfe sheep!

That's the only time this topic gets to me. I understand some people don't care to carry. It's your choice. But don't talk to others as if they where retarded. You can huff and puff all you want. We have our rights as well and you have to deal with it.

I want to go outside and shoot this a$$hole's stereo.  He's blasting the bass with his "dirty south" rap at 1:20am on a week night.  I can't wait to move outta this place next month!  I want to go down there and say something to him but, with my luck, he'd be one of the local thugs and try something.  The moral of the story is, I don't go looking for trouble.  If someone is determined to do me, or anyone I care about, serious harm, then I want to be prepared.

I keep an old sawed off (legal length) 12ga. under my bed where I can grab it fast.  So easy to operate even under stress.  My girlfriend is comfortable with it because it doesn't reqire any precision aiming.  If the boom of a 12ga. doesn't run them off then I don't know what will.  I also have a S&W 686 .357mag for personal carry.
I just read that, in Texas, effective 9/1/07, it'll be fully legal to drive or ride with a concealed handgun any time, even without a CHL.  That's the day I'm waiting for before I start carrying all the time.  Gives me plenty of time to make myself a nice custom shoulder rig for it!  In the meantime I really do need to get around to doing that CHL class.  I'm a slacker.

This was an interesting topic.  I rather enjoyed some of the banter.  I am a female so none of the "male" reasons about why I carry a gun apply.  How convenient for me...lol.    I do think training is important.  Playing out scenarios will help you understand how you might react in certain situations.  I think if it is legal for you to carry then you should do so if you feel so inclined.  I carry all the time (LEO).

No need to even have a weapon. For some reason they make me very nervous. I feel safe now if I break down knowing lots of Harley Brothers are out there with weapons that will help me if needed.

"No court in the land will uphold a killing for personal property.  Everyday some poor bastard who was just protecting his property is found guilty of some lesser charge but he is normally always found guilty."

Actually, it is law here in Tennessee that if someone is in your house and you don't know them, it is automatically assumed that they intend you harm and you can rightfully and legally shoot them.

I've carried, with a permit, for about 25 years. Carrying has helped me avoid trouble more than once, usually because the grave potential consequences made me get away from the stiuation rather than escalate it. I'm no longer a repo man, but there are plenty of crazies out there.
On the bike, I usually keep a S&W .38 Airweight in the gun pocket of my jacket. This summer I sometimes leave the jacket, and the gun, at home, if I'm riding in rural, relatively trouble-free areas. In the car, I always carry a Kimber .45 Stainless Ultra Carry. My fiancee legally carries a .45 Glock as well. We both use Hydrashoks.
This whole issue boils down to choice. I am a Libertarian. As long as one is responsible, the decision is theirs...

Interesting thread. I started write several times, each time sounded confrontational like I was offended by all the negative and often stupid comments about CCW. The funniest post was that someone claimed they see no reason to ever need to carry a weapon...OMG ... LOL...try turning on the news for 5 minutes. Man assaulted at gun point at gas station (plantation fl), pregnant women carjacked then shot an killed (Miami, fl), 72 year old man assaulted in Subway restaurant - at gunpoint (plantation, fl), 91 year old man pummeled by 22 year old thug for his car (Detroit, MI), Christmas crossfire in Boynton beach mall (Boynton bch, FL), student goes on killing spree at university (Virginia), women victim of rape after thugs caused accident in cars to stop her (OHIO - my aunt). Still think there is NO reason to carry a gun? I think that is great for all you who want to be victims...for YOU, not me. Good think you are not the one writing the laws.

But, hey man - people making broad sweeping negative comments about others who carry legally shouldn't let my contrary opinions offend you. Matters of fact, I only have Chuck Heston and the NRA on my side, CCW bad mouthers have Brady, Hillary, and Hitler on your side. Yes Hitler, he systematically took the guns away from citizens so he could wipe them out without a fight (read up on the history of the Warsaw Ghetto).

As for the entire LEOs strata that believe citizens should not carry, well in the state of Florida I say tough and too bad! I carry and glad I am allowed to exercise my right and freedoms. Where were the LEO officers when my aunt was raped? My mother told me to look out for myself in this world, bc no one else will...again, I choose not to be a victim.

Additionally, I read from several LEOs that if you carry you better practice (train). Yep, good advice - but coming from a LEOs, it is laughable - I grew up with officers that were friends with my father and I was able to outshoot them all at 13yrs old. Granted, father transferred a lot of knowledge to me from his trips to gunsight and thunder ranch, but they did not practice enough. And this is a common issue with LEOs, they are just not gun enthusiasts.

Knowing when to shoot is just as important as knowing how to shoot!
Are you a better shot than 60% of the cops out there? Maybe. Do you shot more frequently than most cops? Probably.
Of the 100 man department I retired from we probably had 25 that were active, gun collecting, shooters (enthusiasts). The entire department was  required to go out twice a year, with state qualified instructors, to train, and meet state required standards.  If you didn't qualify you had to re-train until you could. The vast majority were able to qualify without retraining.

It's not unreasonable to expect John Q. Public to train, and qualify,
to carry concealed..
