The question most asked here has been why anyone needs to carry a gun on a motorcycle when the real point of the question was "how" to carry while riding. NO you don't need a gun to protect a bike, but if a situation occurs where your life is at risk then a gun sitting at home in the safe doesn't do you much good. Every citizen with a clean record and the desire to do so should be able to carry, however some states such as my home state of Maryland makes it almost impossible to get a permit and if you are caught with a handgun wihout a permit you will be in deep doo-doo.

Talking "Rights" is one thing. Talking "Reality" is a whole other story.

There ya go,,,What you're saying is YOU need to carry a gun but those outside of law enforcement have no reason to do so. Didn't Rosie O'Donnell pretty much say the same thing when it comes to her armed bodyguards?

Just thought this may give a little attention to the reason some people may want to carry. I do not carry one, I do own a Ruger 9mm, but I live in MD and it is hard to get a certificate. If I could carry legally, I'm not sure if I would or not. I have shot plenty of guns with my father since i was 7 or so, but I was also taught the dangers of a gun and proper usage of any weapon in my control. There is alot of trash out there that needs to be cleaned up, but I'm afraid that if i were the one that was put into a situation and had to use it, I would probably be sitting with most of the trash looking through bars of my new 6X8 home. I love how our great law system works (<- sarcasm) and the fact that I really feel safer with the officers on the street, By the way, do you notice how on alot of the news channels anymore, COPS are the ones killing their spouses or girlfriends or misstresses? They are no better than you or I, they are human, there are even ones with mental problems and really shouldn't be on any kind of force (if you beleive that or not) I'm sorry for the hard working officers, there are quite a bit of you out there and I am nowhere against the law, I just feel that our government ,State or local or federal, really isn't for the average man trying to defend himself or loved ones.

Jlion, I think the real reason you prefer to ride alone is so you don't have to check to see that your friends are with you when you decide to turn tail and run.

Man, what a thread! Everybody has a opinion. Me, I think it' s all about personal freedom. I figure that many pro gun folks are also pro-riding. I know a lot of my ABATE friends are 'gun-nuts' too. And, I'd never admit on a web site to carrying the HK while riding...

Funny thread ............
when I suggested in another thread that in Oz we don't need to carry because it aint nearly so bad as the States I get quoted some crap study done by some uni "never heard of" suggesting violence is worse in Oz than in the States .  YET all these pro guns guys are using a history of violent attacks in the States to justify carrying ??? I don't get it . I suppose it would be too simple to avoid trouble ?
......................Uh oh...here come the responses..... save your time - I have already read the thread and the excuses.

I love replies like these.   Let's extend your logic.

Don't carry a spare tire on your car - just avoid that nail in the road.
Don't carry a toolkit on your bike - just avoid the road gremlins.
Don't put a fire extinguisher in the kitchen - just avoid burning anything.
A pistol is an inanimate object.  They don't spontaneously go off.  They don't kill people.  They aren't evil or have any emotion.  It is a tool.

It's obvious you have some sort of crystal ball which lets you just 'avoid' any trouble.  Mind loaning it around?  There's this lottery ticket I've been meaning to buy.

I`m in NYS and I always carry when i`m one of my bikes. Why? because people are jerks. You can run into the wrong people at the wrong time almost anywhere especially on a longer ride and away from home where you don`t know the area. They can try to steal you bike, rob you, or worse for pretty much no reason at all. I carry a Glock 26  9mm, sometimes called the baby glock.

Me too.  I carry either a Glock 19 (9mm) or Glock 36 (.45acp).

..leave the 9 at home along with the shotguns and rifles..always carry Benchmade AFCK..ask the LEO's what your chances are with a concealed weapon (pistol) vs well trained, determined combatant with a knife any closer than 31 feet.

Wow.  Advice to just carry a knife.  C'mon, man, get real.  The perp has a gun, and he can hit me from however far away, and you want me swinging a knife around in the air?  Good grief.  Who cares what the "leos" think about it - I'll be the judge of what will be my best protection, thanks, but no thanks.

...I didn't say from however far away or swinging a knife around in the air ..I said less than 31 feet..by the time most, except for the well trained, by the time you draw your weapon, especially in a box on bike, take safety off, some would need to chamber a round,  you could expect knife combatant to close distance while drawing and have a lethal piece of you before you ever got a round off. I'm not talking the average redneck with a Buck knife..but someone with a little training. As for the LEO's, they were included because most departments are extremely cautious and recieve specific training to deal with perp with knife because of the number of officers killed by being a little too dependent on gun and a bit complacent on the distance thing.
It's all about how remarkably fast the distance can be closed, ease of deployment, and if you are trying to bring fire to bear under stress how long it takes to make a handgun effective.
..and you can carry a knife pretty much anywhere.. except airplanes and court.
..but I have nothing against anyone, except perp/badguys carrying whatever they feel comfortable with. Kinda remarkable that I carried back when I was young and probably had no need and now that I have a coupla years on me the only time the pistol goes with me is on camping trips.

Retired LEO with almost 30 years combined military and civilian Law Enforcement experience. I am covered by the Federal CCW law and have the Ohio Permit as well.  I was happy to retire without ever having had to shoot someone.

Based on my experience I think everyone who can pass a background check and a training session should be permitted to carry concealed. People need to be able to defend themselves because, as much as we would like to, there just aren't enough Cops to do it.

I have a collection of firearms, to include a vintage .45 cal Thompson my father in law gave me (yes, I have a tax stamp.) I'm a card carrying member of the NRA..

I carry a .32 Seecamp that fits nicely in a front pocket, a S&W Chief that I have carried for 25 years when I feel the need for something a little bigger, and a Sig 226 (my retired duty weapon) for when I travel. There is seldom a time, outside my home, when I am not armed.

Guess that makes me a pu$$ie...

im also retired LEO and feel exactly as you... people need to be able to defend them selfs or others...

the Pu$$ies are the piece of shat criminals that are only tuff because they just stuck a gun to some ladys head, or ANY man that is unable to defend himself.... theyre the high school bullies who now bullie with a gun.....we (law abiding good citezens) are bullied by these pu$$ies every day across the U.S. if we ALL started carrying the pu$$ies wouldnt have a chance....

we can do a billion scenerios on here but remember, would 12 of your peers believe your actions were prudent and necessary to prevent serious bodily injury or death to yourself or others? if so then your actions will be justified.

Retired LE.  I used to carry on and off the clock.  Haven't carried since I left.  Really don't miss having to lug all that steel around.  :)

I live in IL which does not offer any CCP. I've often wonder what would happen if you get caught carrying a weapon. Guys at the gun shop say that some LEO's would just tell you to put it away, this is assuming you were just randomly caught with it. This is a felony, right?

Sometimes I feel like just risking it, but I don't think I want a fricken felony hanging over my head.

I can see everyone's point of view making sense.

If and when IL allows a CCP I'll think about it then.

I never leave the house without a firearm no matter what I'm driving/riding and this has been the case for nearly 40 years now. That said, in all those years, I've never had to use my weapon while off-duty or since my retirement and hope to God I never do.
