ORIGINAL: tinker You know.... I have to ask... what the heck are you guys so afraid of that you feel the need to carry a gun? Because when seconds matter, the police are only minutes away. I'm afraid of all of the non-lawabiding citizens (unlike myself) that don't have the legal right to carry, yet not only don't hesitate to do so but will also use it when they get angry, much less when there life is threatened, unlike those of us that have the permit. (BTW, did you know that those of us that carry legally go through an extensive criminal background? We are the people you can trust the most, if the FBI does.) In my Nirvana, I hope to be the guy that lives next door to someone like you. I will then become your best friend when the SHTF. At that point I'm assuming folks such as yourself won't have to ask this question anymore. MM

THIS is a great read if you take the time. Very profound observations therein. Even those who don't like it can't argue the logic although it's entertaining to watch them try. Woof!

All it takes is for us to cut off one drunk idiot who becomes hell bent on running us over or following us home. A Glock with the question - "Do we really have a problem here?" has, on 3 occasions ended with a NO. Go pick another victim - I'm busy

Most of the sheeple out there would throw a fit if they found out their kids' school had defective fire extinguishers. Those same sheeple would throw a bigger fit if they learned a teacher or administrator was armed on school property. The trick is to get those sheeple to look back in history and count the number of students injured or killed by school fires and compare that number to those injured or killed by gunfire where no one was able to protect them.

No I have well over a million road miles. I have never had a reason to use one. Although on one occasion I would have like to put one through the head of a couple of ND football players at their homecoming. Luck of the draw, I picked the wrong hotel getting off the Interstate. So probably a good thing I don't carry.

"I have never carried, but I have been giving deep thought about getting a permit and starting. My question is , what if you are out on the road and come into a state that doesnt allow you to carry." Don't tell anyone.

Well I guess it's just because I'm such a likable guy that I've never run into a problem that I couldn't handle without weapons. My opinion (and as we all know opinions are like a$$holes, everyone has one) is that those that carry weapons are more likely to attract trouble. First, they suspect they will run into it, so they carry. Second, because they have this weapon they feel more secure and they let their mouth get out ahead of what they can back up. and Third, the weapon makes them feel tougher than they actually are.. and they think that if they flash a pistol or a knife (or whatever) that alone will make the trouble go away (and that doesn't work all the time). Seriously, if you pull out your pistol because some guy pi$$es you off.. you don't know that maybe he has 20 friends or so - and things could get really ugly, really fast. There are legal issues also that you have to consider - if you shoot a guy that's unarmed, you could end up being sued at the least. I'm sure every one here that carries is well aware of all these issues, and you have answers for them. Not trying to change anyones beliefs, just stating what I've observed. Basically, I think the guys that feel they have to carry are just afraid... that's what it all boils down to in the end.

I carry most of the time...but only because I'm a cop and don't want to get my a$$ kicked trying to buy milk at Wal-mart. I'm all for the private citizen being able to carry w/a permit and the correct training. Long live the 2nd amendment

Basically, I think the guys that feel they have to carry are just afraid... that's what it all boils down to in the end. It is obvious that some of you really don't need to carry a gun. At least not untll you are better educated. 1. Never pull out a gun until you are justified in using same. Nobody should ever know you have one until it is time to use it. If you pull it out because "some guy pisses you off".......YOU absolutely should not carry a gun! 2. Know when it is time to use it. 3. Those of you who have never seen the need for one, I hope your life continues on its care free course, but does that mean you will never need to protect you or your loved ones life in the future? (I shouldn't be surprised at this thought process on a MC forum....after all it is kinda like "I have never been hurt on a MC, why wear any protective gear?") 4. You use the word AFRAID like no one is supposed to be afraid!??? Or really in the place of the word "coward". Only idiots aren't afraid. Being afraid is appropriate in many of life's situations. It is what you do when you are afraid that determinds how wide your yellow stripe is. 5. Speaking of fear. Many of the comments here against carrying a gun do bring up the idea of "afraid"...as in afraid of guns, many people are, even big strong bikers; afraid of yourself, as in can't control yourself when angered; afraid of using deadly force to protect life, I don't understand this one so I can't explain it. 6. A gun is a tool. When used at the appropriate time for the appropriate reason, it is a very useful tool. A pray that none of us who carry will ever have to use that tool, but I also pray if you are ever in need of that tool, you have one very close by.

I just don't go around in la-la land, thinking that bad things only happen to other people. And carrying a pistol, if anything, has made me more cautious and more likely to avert any possible confrontations. Exactly because of the life-or-death possibilities. And I'm not afraid, scared, or have small "junk".

Carry all the time 365 days a year...but also carry a badge & ID to go with it. Carry because I can to protect myself, family and the public if need be....first & foremost I make a fantastic witness and will only deploy it if necessity requires it to save my life or that of others. CCW really requires a lot of responsibility, common sense, restraint and knowledge of the laws and holding one's self accountable for their actions. Always best to walk away and be a good wit or informant. I believe that if you don't look for and wander in to trouble, trouble won't find you. On the other hand, I have had the occasion to assist on-duty LEO's in the past and probably will continue to do so in the future, no matter where my rides take me. Had the occasion to assist LEO's in other states during my cross country rides and have always been thanked for being there to help out. It's nice to see that the brotherhood in LE is still there! The National Carry Law has it's plus'. I also agree that honest, honorable and trained civilians should be allowed to carry..(but that's just my opinion). Ride safe everyone!!

You know.. it's OK to be afraid.. in the right circumstances. Fear releases epinephrine, gets your body into that fight or flight readiness - being afraid at the proper time is useful and good. BUT to be afraid all the time? Not good. I really have to wonder what sort of world you think you live in where you wouldn't go outside your house without a gun? Whatever. You choose to live the way you do, and that is your right. It's your right to carry a gun. I am VERY pro second amendment rights. I own guns and enjoy target shooting. I even have a couple around whos purpose is home defense. I've never had to use these and doubt I ever will. IF I do have to use one though, no one will see it coming. As far as #1 (getting pissed off and flashing a gun) : I've seen this happen more than once. It never has ended well for the guy with the gun. I've also seen idiots boast about having a gun tucked away out on their scoot... and seen these same idiots asked whether they thought they would actually make it out to their bike.. I've seen this happen more than once.. not just with guns though, one guy had this HUGE frigging knife (totally useless) and mouthed off. That didn't end well either. Seriously though, If you show respect and aren't an a$$hole, I doubt you will have many problems. If however you are frequenting a place where there is bound to be trouble, I question WHY you are there in the first place? If you are LOOKING for trouble, then in my mind you are entitiled to it... but not entitled to start shooting people because you KNEW this place was trouble but you went anyway.. therefore you loose the right to use your gun. As far as defending others or others defending me? I don't want anyone defending me. Keep your good intentions to yourself, thank you very much. I don't need it and I don't want it. As far as me stepping in for others? It depends. If this is a friend, absolutely in a frigging heart beat. If I don't know this person, I really don't know what I'm stepping into, so unless it looks like someone is going to get seriously hurt or killed, I will keep my nose out of their business. You know, if you're fearful of the world and feel the need to carry a gun.. heck, go ahead. Just don't point it in my direction if you ever decide to use it. My only consideration is that I wonder about your motivation... but in the end, my opinions aren't worth squat as far as you are concerned. Do what you want man, it's a free country.

Any idiot who flashes a gun because he's pissed deserves to have his butt kicked and will be lucky if he isn't shot with his own weapon.

Carry my trusty M-16 everywhere I go. \\;lol... \\; But when I''m home I don''t only because my permit has expired. \\; Plus I live in a different state now, but when I get back home I will be getting another one and will be carrying everywhere I go. \\; I carry because it''s my right to do so as a law abiding citizen. \\; In the 5 years that I carried when I was living in Philadelphia I only pulled my piece once. \\; I found a guy in my car going through my glove box. \\; Kept him at bay till Philly''s Finest came and took him away. \\; I''m a very level headed guy and can usually talk my way out of any situation, but there always that 1 time and I damn sure don''t want to be caught unprotected.

2 months ago I \\;finished reading "The Bias Against Guns" by author John Lott. According to the Author''s statistics (a good number of years worth) just the brandishing of a firearm by a potential "victim" happens about 1.5-2 MILLION times a year in this country, keeping them from becoming victims. I seriously doubt these people \\;were: A) Looking for a problem or: B) Were all in bad parts of town. They were probably just people that looked like an easy mark to a bad guy &\\;/or were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Unfortunately the Anti-Gun Media &\\; Liberals will never let this fact see the light of day (There are many other facts about crime rates dropping in cities that had passed laws in favor of firearms possession &\\; crime rates increasing in those cities that passed laws prohibiting firearms posession). There are many other pro-firearm facts that will never make it out either. This is the 2nd book this gentleman has written regarding the 2nd Amendment (I need to find the 1st one). \\;He is VERY UN-biased in his aproach &\\; has data that other anti-gun experts have tried for years to de-bunk. Fortunately they have not been successful as he has been able to dispute all of the "evidence" &\\; claims to the contrary by proving exactly how the oppositions data is flawed. Please don''t take my word for it, go to the library or the bookstore, read the book &\\; form your own opinions based on the FACTS in this book. I live in AZ. &\\; just completed a 6500 mile 30 day \\;SOLO ride around the country. Rode thru 15 different states. 70% on back roads. If I had accidentally ended up in a bad area (&\\; who knows when you will just be in the wrong place (or circumstance) at the wrong time), I seriously doubt that 911 would be there in time to save my life. Had to call \\;911 once when someone was breaking into my house @ 2:AM, (&\\; I don''t think they had a 6-Pack and were intending on having a party). It took the police officers 45 minutes to respond to my house. fortunately I was armed &\\; was able to frighten the intruders away (in my own fashion, without firing a shot). I had 2 kids &\\; a wife. If they had gotten into the house, I would have made sure neither myself nor \\;wife nor kids \\;would have become victims either. There are too many stories in newspapers around the country of victims that paid for someone elses illegal activities with their lives. Anyway, getting back to my ride, I did carry (.45), have no \\;CCW (&\\; I agree that the Constitution of this great country gives every citizen the right to do so), committed no crime spree \\;&\\; no one knew I had it. The more important issue is that I also didn''t need to use it or brandish it. I do understand the responsibiility that goes along with the decision to carry it (&\\; I accept that responsibility), but \\;in my perspective I \\;was not the criminal (even though it was illegal based on the laws of some of the states I rode thru), just making sure I didn''t become a victim either. At least if something had happened, I would have had the ability to protect &\\; defend my own right to Life, Liberty &\\; the Pursuit of Happiness without having to try to rely on a police force that might not show up in time. I am not in any way attempting to bad rap any police force anywhere in the country, as a matter of fact I respect the job they do on a day-in &\\; day-out basis but as someone else stated in an earlier opinion (fact) is that they cannot show up until a crime HAS BEEN COMMITTED!! I don''t intend to be another statistic (sorry, liberals) I have had firearms for the better part of 22 years &\\; have done my best to develop my skills with them. I know there are a great many people that should not carry firearms, You-Tube is full of videos showing that. I would endorse those idiots losing their ability to posess any type of firearm, but don''t put all of us that believe strongly in the 2nd Amendment in that same category. For those of you who are unenlightened, the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting or sport shooting \\;&\\; everything to do with The Right of THE PEOPLE to keep and bear arms for protection &\\; to take back a government that has become dictatorial or possibly tyrannical (read the Federalist Papers written by founding Fathers Alexander Hamilton, James Madison &\\; John Jay). Fortunately the Supreme Court did rule that the right is an individual right (every other right of the "People" in our Constitution has been ruled on as an individual, not a "collective" right). In this day &\\; age there is plenty of information available thru the internet, etc. regarding our Constitution &\\; what was meant by virtually every word written in it. As I said earlier, don''t take my word for it, do your own research as I have &\\; some of you anti-gunners out there may become enlightened &\\; ........... I''ll now climb down off of my soap box. Good evening to all (pro &\\; con)  \\; 02 Vivid Black Road Glide w/lots of stuff
