The 88 MAY be a laquer paint. If it is , you should be able to clean it free of wax and recoat it with laquer clearcoat. Allow it to dry for a week after a few applications and some fine polishing compound will bring up the shine after an easy sanding with 1500 wet sandpaper very easily for any overspray in the area.
You may also be able to get a spray can of the color touch up and just dust the area where you went through the clear and follow up with the proceedure above. You may find the touch up can

If it was a later model, they use urethane paint systems that require a different approach such as clearing the entire tank.
