Sidewinder, that's a good-looking engine guard. What one (model) is it?
And I can't quite make out the decal near the oil tank (left side)---is it a fireman's shield?

Yea, I've got the speedometer cover on already - without it the speedometer didn't have a finished look (the grooves around the speedometer just didn't look right). I had a number of people over yesterday -- showed them the picture of your dash insert & then showed them what came on my Deluxe -- the all agreed your's looks a whole lot better - I'm going to get one next week.

Finally got around to filling out my signature and adding a pic of my scoot. This was taken the day after I rode it home from the dealer. It's already got some new chrome on it. THE SEAT???? I'm sitting on the rear portion of the seat for maximum comfort. I'm only 5'11" and the seat is okay unit I get more than a few miles in the saddle and want to really relax. I don't want to change it yet because it's not "terrible"...I'm thinking I'll get used to it since IT IS my first cruiser of any kind.

Around 5 bills. I switch back and forth pretty often. For day trips and possible rain, we take the tour pack, short trips - we use the back rest. Alone, I ride open. I like the pack better than a T-Bag. Probably for the look and convenience. BLKPRL.

Dave, talk to me about the back rest you have. I really want a cheaper option to replacing me seat---plus I've only had it two weeks and it hasn't broken in yet. I need to go back about an inch or two; but a back rest would also help some.
I think I remember you saying somewhere else that you got the idea from a Springer. What about comfort, back support, part numbers, etc. Anything you're willing to share would be appreciated. Does the bike look good with the pad off with just the chrome bar showing?

Daves Deluxe
02-05-2006, 08:21 PM
Brian:
The seat rail and pad is from a FLSTSC (Springer) don't know the part # off hand but it's in the catalog book or online HD website look under softail springer 2000 - 2003 it looks good with or without the pad.

Skippy49

Ingenue:
I had to drill a new hole in the strut to accomadate the bolt mounting pattern of the bags. There is already a hole in the fender behind it and then all you need is the bracket on the inside of the fender that has two nuts on it instead of the one that comes on the deluxe with one nut on it. It's a standard harley part, I got it at the dealer-I think it was from an 03 FLSTS
The saddlebag guards will hit the pipes if they're mounted like they are supposed to mount, so I made a bracket that extends the lower mount back about two inches or so which raises the lower part of the bars just enough to clear the pipes. It really doesn't move them enough to notice unless you really compared two bikes with them mounted each way.
The bags may still be available through the dealer but we bought these off of Ebay in like new condition. We saw a bike at the Springfield mile last Sept. that had bags on it like these and she really liked them.

ingenue
02-06-2006, 12:27 AM
Thanks Steve - I may just go with the V&H Big Radius pipes which would leave plenty of room for the larger bags. I haven't heard them in person, but I love the sound on the website. I know I've seen these on a Deluxe, though the site doesn't list the FLSTN.

Actually I just looked at the Softails listed on the V&H site for the Big Radius pipes again.

They list FXSTN - there is no such Softail model!! I think it should be FLSTN instead. In which case, I'm very happy cause I really like the look and sound of these pipes!

Skippy49
02-06-2006, 01:20 AM
Actually the bags weren't a problem with clearance, it was the guard rails that I had to move slightly. I don't know if the Big Shot Longs were listed as fitting the deluxe when we bought them, but I talked to V&H people and they told me they would fit.

yeah--my dealer looked at me funny when I told him about the rail and seat. He didn't deny it---he honestly said, " I didn't know it would fit." I told him I could send him a picture if he wanted and he siad, " I believe you"

I'm actually taking my seat to a guy on Tuesday and for 80 bucks; he's reworking my seat. I will go that route first and see how things are from there. He's going to put me back about an inch or two and I may order the rail and pad afterwards. Thanks

It is an EZ Brake - and I Love it! My foot used to get hung up in the standard brake pedal - the EZBrake pushes it forward to where the whole footboard is available. Also have the extenders for the gear shift as well.

is it the regular king sized or short version.....It looks short, which is the one I want; but was wondering about the wind protection of a short version

02-20-2006, 09:54 PM
From the very bottom to the top of WS is 25". From the top of the headlight to the top of WS is 17 1/2". I think there are larger options but may also be shorter as well. I never had any other WS on so I can't compare for wind blockage but I can tell you it keeps all bugs off me and there is a very noticable difference with wind without it. It seems to fit the bike perfectly and is sufficient in wind deflection. I would not get one any larger, but that is JMO.

Well, I'm almost done. Bought the bike on 6/17/05, added a few things before Sturgis then put it away for the winter on 11/7/05. I've been adding things since, mostly chrome, and went down to the dealer to take a few pics.

So far, I've added:
V&H Longshots
Narrow beach bars
Chrome switches
Chrome front forks
Braided cables

Going to talk to my Service Manager tomorrow, not liking that new left hand cable sticking so far up into the air and looping OVER the handlebar. [:@]

Still may add a few more little things, still have another month up here before she comes out and we hit the road again.

Nice rides . Do you both have the fuel injected model? I noticed that you both have V&H which I prefer over Screaming eagle (gotta love that sound). My dealer gave me some story that V&H works better on the Carb models. Also, that If I had them installed before taking delivery of the bike they wouldn't be able to include them in the warrenty of the bike the way they could with the scream eagle kit. So I went with the SE.

Have you guys ever had any problems? Did you get them installed at a harley dealer?

Yes, mine is fuel injected and no, I have not had any problems. Ran stock pipes for awhile minus the baffles, but had the pipes installed at the HD dealer where I bought the bike and then remapped, so far no problems.

But I'm on great terms with my HD Dealer and the shop guys. A few pizzas here and there and they keep me running tight. ;)

Hey Calin,

In some early thread pics you have a horn that threads between your cylinders and exits through as trumpet on the right side. Where did you get it & why did you take it off?

I have been looking at the kits but they say 80-90 softail.

You can find the horn at i.e. Zodiac http://www.zodiac.nl/UK/Bbook2005/Chapter%2004/index.html
But be aware that this is 'just' an electrical horn withy even lower sound than the original!
Better to go for an 'air horn' like HOWARD'S DYNAMIC DUO AIR HORNS KITS EVOLUTION TWIN CAM,
can be found on e-bay.

DeluxeNJ,
You must be a brilliant guy, because I have ordered my Vivid Black Deluxe with almost EXACTLY (but not quite exactly) the same mods.

I am changing out the wide whites to all black tires and am going with clear rather than smoked lenses. I was planning on holding off on the SS lines, but am curious if you find they make a difference. I hadn't ordered the chrome lower belt protector either, but otherwise, pretty similar changes.

I also am changing the speedo to the tach speedo combo that looks exactly the same as the stock speedo. Other than that, pretty much the same.

I listened to the V and H longshots then the SE 16 guage pipes you got and I actually liked the sound of the SE's better. They are a slight bit deeper and throaty to my ear. I understand they are made by V and H for Harley, too.

Nice pics !!!!

Hey, any chance you have a pic of the bike with the sissy bar ON but the windshield OFF?

Thanks.

BBDeluxe,

I haven't felt a difference yet on the brakes but they do responed very well. I agree, the SE's are deep and throaty which is a good thing. They are made by V&H or at least thats what the dealer told me.

Congrats on your bike. When do you pick it up? I look forward to seeing pics. I don't have a pic yet of the sissy bar minus windsheild but will in a week or two (if it warms up again).

DeluxeNJ,
I am told delivery will be in April, but don't know exactly when in April. I am SO chomping at the bit. I decided to do all those add ons up front because my dealer offers no charge for labor with any mods you do at time of delivery and 2 year warranty on all parts that go on at that time. I am thinking of Boss Bags, too. But I will wait on those for a bit.

Meanwhile, I am away two weekends in April and have an all weekend committment one of the other weekends in April, so I don't know how that is all going to work.....ahhhh.

I decided on the black tires because I want to lean away from the straight nostalgia look.

Your bike looks fantastic. Thanks for the post. I will get pics when mine comes in.

One other question: did you test ride a Deluxe stock before getting yours and doing the STI upgrade? I just rode a stock Softail Standard which was nice, but I am told the StI kit with SE pipes really makes a big difference in torque and roll on. That would be nice. Interestingly enough, my "other ride" is a BMW R1200GS, which actually feels like the Vtwin in the quality of the vibration dept. It also makes the same torque as the Harley but makes 100 hp and weighs 490 lbs, so it gets up and goes. I think the two bikes will compliment each other because they are so completely different.

BB Deluxe,

I feel your pain. I waited two months for my bike and the day after it was delivered I had to go on a 2 week business trip.
I had all my mods done prior to delivery to also take advantage of the warranty and discounts. I've ridden the softails before and the ST1 does make a small difference in torque.
I'm also a BMW owner (or was one). I had an R1100S.

Your a lucky man to have both. I had to choose one or the other according to the wife.

DeluxeNJ,
My wife said "Go for it" to both the GS and now, the Deluxe. Wow. I am still scratching my head. She is amazing.

We rationalized: The payments on the HD will be just about the same as the child care/day care payments that will end this summer as my youngest heads off to school in the Autumn. So cash flows will stay about the same. Nice.

I am changing out the wide whites to all black tires and am going with clear rather than smoked lenses.

Hey BBDeluxe.. I just ordered my vivid black '06 Deluxe last week. Should be getting it in May sometime. I was considering having blackwall tires put on my bike, too. Seems that almost everyone keeps the whites on there and for good reason - they really complete that retro look. Anyway, just curious if the dealer is charging you for the tire swap? My dealer said they wouldn't charge for parts (since they'd be keeping the brand new whitewalls) but just for labor.

Best of luck, and I hope to see you all on the road.

BTW, isn't this thread supposed to be pics? lol

I get credit for the wide whites which cost more than the blacks, and they charge labor for the swap. They tell me it will work out to be about an even swap that way.

Cool, since those are exactly the same pipes I am going to put on my deluxe, I would like to ask you another question. Did you need to get the SERT done or just go for the stage 1 download, with the air filter. If I can get buy with just the download I would rather do that than pay the extra money for the SERT. The red looks great. I noticed you have the Leatherworks Indian Nickel saddlebags. Thinking of getting those myself with the Eazy Brackets. Do you have the basket weave? Can't tell for sure from the pics. They look great and are bigger than I would have imagined. I see you have the low pipes; I was planing to leave mine stock for a while, but dealer says hey will still fit. Planning to throw a sissy bar and backrest on as well.

How do you like them? Any problems with them ie size, install, heat from pipes etc?

Thanks,

Hello Group,

I am the owner of a 2005 Black FLSTNI. I have recently designed and machined a better alternative to the lousy stock HD seat retainer nuts
used to hold the seat to teh grab rain and fender. I like the stripped down, bobber look so I always have the passenger pillion removed.
However, teh lousy stock cast crappy seat nuts made me sick to look at, so I came up with an alternative. See attached pics. THe "ace of spades"
retainers are machined from 316 Stainless steel and then polished with rouge to a fine luster. My buddies with Deluxe's love them, so I invite any of
you to contact me if you'd like to inquire more about them. I have another production run scheduled for next week. Hope you like them.

Sorry i haven't answered, busy busy

The Horn was for an older bike so I had to modify it for mine. It really was easy and I loved the way it looked...BUT the horn was a POS. No matter how I tuned it it was NG, way to quiet. I am experimenting with a compressor from Howards Horns retro fitting to the nostalgic trumpet like I had. I'll keep you posted I think I can make it work and be LOUD.

The Bars are 1 1/4 BURLEY Bikini beach bars. 36 wide very comfy for me with the young guns seat. Burley also makes the top Riser cover and hides where the bars neck down. The risers are also 1 1/4 x 1 1/2 tall but I dint know who made them. I got then on e-bay for 9$. (cheapest thing on the bike)

Now I need to get new pipes (unfortunately in Germany we have some limitations :-(

And I am thinking about replacing the origin bar and risers by a beachbar. It would bo more classic.
What do you think ??

Hi Eddie,
Have you seen the Roadhouse pipes http://www.310design.com/roadhouse/harley.htm ?
They'll ceratainly give the old time touch. And might even be approved in Germany?
About the beachbar, I couln't tell because I do not know them...

We got even more snow in Sweden yesterday!!! Enough is enough! Let the spring RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Bernt,

it's the same in Germany, last night we've got snow again
instead of spring, sun and heat !!

But the day will come :-))

I love your bike (but mine a little bit more :-))

Have fun

Yes, it's amazing that such a "big" bike handles so smoothly! But again, we are all partial. I'm sure rice-rocket-riders would feel like their on a tank. (Now get those pics uploaded! ;) )

Hey Guys..... Sweeeeeet bikes.... I've been looking at your pictures for about a month or so, getting ideas of what to do to my Deluxe. It's an 06 Blackcherry and I'm loving it.... I know posts are "useless without pix" so here we go..... Hope you like it!!!

She looks great Cali (or is it a "he"....:D ). The seat looks great---gives the bike a sleek/smoother look of lines. Is it a sundowner??? (I'm not very good a IDing parts yet. [8D])

Thanks SuperMan (Man_ of_Steel)!! The seat is a HD Badlander... Little stiffer than the original, but I liked the smoothlines that flowed with the bags.... Haven't had much time to really try out the seat yet because it's been raining like crazy here!!!

Hi,
I really like the Rinehart slip-on mufflers. I posted a question about these a while back but got no replies at that time. How do the sound? The Deluxe looks great in black cherry.

Hey Joe,

Thanks for the compliment, I really like the Blackcherry and waited until I could get it. The Rinehardts sound good... Pretty loud on the Deluxe. I was really suprised at the difference... The dealer where I live told me I was the first Deluxe he had put the Rinehardt slip ons on. He liked how they looked and sounded as well. My husband put them on his Street Glide and mine is louder but his sounds deeper. We're both really happy with them! I'm gonna get the airbox and map done at 1000 mi.

CaliGirl,
Great pics! I am changing out my wide whites to black wall tires, too (but spoked wheels), so it was great to see those pics.

Haven't seen one in Black Cherry. Nice.
Thanks.

here's my updated deluxe pics. I got rid of the floorboards, and spotlights and changed the handlebars (for about the 10th time), cables, fenders, signals, forward controls and seat.

Thanks!! The wheels are Renegades... I like the whitewalls, just don't like the cleaning that goes along with em'.... Plus, couldn't resist the opportunity to add a little more chrome!! Your bike is schweeet!

I finally got my Curved, Laydown License plate installed. It was made for a three-bolt mount, so I had to do a bit of "Ace Hardware Engineering" to make some brackets to go from the two-bolt mount on the Deluxe tailight to the mounting on the back of the plate.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the results. Although if someone looks closely enough, my "homemade" [&:] brackets on the underside of the plate are pretty ugly.

<Sorry about not having them embedded but when I do, they are BIG and I've already resized to 25% in photobucket. It doesn't seem to do any good. I'm a nooooob!>

Thought I would add my '06 Deluxe since I have seen plenty of Black and white, but none with Fatboy wheels. I also have a sissy bar bag attached to the luggage rack and have chromed out everything on the handlebars including the grips. Hope you all like.

Been drooling over all the pictures in this forum. Still got about 7 weeks to wait for my deluxe. Still overseas and trying to get all the mods sorted out over the Internet.

Found this pic and can't determine what the chrome bit is. Been all over the HD site looking for what it might be. Thought it was a decorative nostalgic horn, but that didn't check out.

Any ideas?

Aftermarket horn maybe?
or one of those fancy mounts for a padlock or brake rotor lock.
