Default starter clunck while turning over

Ihave a 107ci advacned timing, with decompression releases and a 1.8 terry starter, once in a while if I hold the start button to long (1,2,3,4 ) I get a load clunck noise !! starter turns the motor over fine for the 1,2,3,4, count then clunck !! .

do you think it is the starter clutch working to hard ?? not able to turn the motor over any more and the clutch disengages
(battery is all chagred up)

thanks

Default RE: starter clunck while turning over

That clunck could be the starter clutch releasing then re-engaging again. If your cranking fuel is off or your timing is too far advanced, you could be getting a kickback or partial combustion causing the starter clutch to either slip due to detonation or disengage, re-engage during apartial combustion power stroke. I had to experiment with timing and fuel in the 0-500 RPM cranking range. Don't know what you have for a tuner and tuning capabilitiesthough. If this continues too long your starter clutch will startslipping, I went thru a couple of these clutch assemblies before I finally resolved the problem. For a while I wasstarting to think it was a defectiveCrank Sensor not being able to pick up astrong enough of a signal during cranking RPMonly but itscoped out OK.
