Goat,

A friend of mine lives in North Al and he and his brother do a week (give or take a couple days)ride. This year he wants to leave a do a short tour up thru West Virginia. New River Gorge I think is one destination. We are talking about May 10 - 15. 15th being on a thurs. I haven't looked and haven't talked to my friend in a couple weeks as to what day we were to be in WV. Were you going to do Myrtle Beach ? I might try and talk them into dropping down into SC on the way back to Al. Its looks to be about 450 miles from the Gorge.

That sounds like one hell of a ride. I don't think I am going to go to Myrtle Beach but I have not completely dropped the idea either.

JJB1 - You are welcome. I hope you had a chance to get out and ride this weekend and get that motor broke in.

Paco - I took mine out for a small ride yesterday and I didn't loose any throttle response. It was just ripping it up and I had the girlfriend on the back.

Hope you guys have had a good weekend,
Catch you later

No need to apologize. Get it fixed and let us know how it goes. I know you haven't much time on the bike but how does the tranny feel to you? I have thought about buying the 6 speed but my tranny does a great job.

JJB1,
Well i am glad it wasn't your trans. I read your post Fri. right before i left work and been woundering about it until just now. I have been out of town and just got home. Hope you get it fixed soon. I really like my motor and trans. motor has 4500 miles and trans at 1000 miles. have had no issues with either.

Goat,
If you do a lot of interstate or long straight runs you would love the 6 gear, but if not, you would be like me, i have it but don't use it that much. I don't know if the gear ratio are different between the stock 5 gears and the first 5 of the Ultima, but my bike rippes up to red line real quick with the Ultima. I really don't remember how it was with the stock tranny. still have not fixed the primary leak after 3 attemps. Zippers performance sells a primary bearing and seal that I am thinking about. haven't made up my mine yet. I hate for a simple seal to kick my a$$.

later............................

Hey Paco,
Those of us that are running 6 speeds in our (pre 94 bikes are geared a lil bit lower, 1.54) than those (94 and up, 1.44) in the primary gearing.

Which helps use 6th gear a little sooner.

Tom

Paco, How is the throttle response? Did you remove the voes completely? I have an Andrews 5 speed in my bike and the SOB rips in every gear. I was out on it this weekend, still friggin cold but f&*k it, and I gave it quite a few good twists of the throttle. I don't ride many highways so I will leave the 5 speed in until I have some problems.

Have a good one Paco!

Between the 5 spd and the Ultima 6 I notice a little diff but not too much...but I was running an oversized andrews pulley on the 5...I do know that the Ultima seems to have low gears but still cruises 70 as a sweet spot

Goat,

I can't tell any difference in the throttle response. It rips up quick and runs strong. 6th is pretty tricky for me, not being use to it. i was running about 75 mph on the way home. there is a pretty long hill about 3 miles from the house. at the bottom of the hill i pasted 3 cars, i didn't think about being in 6th so i just rolled on the throttle and it sounded like i dumped a sack of marbles in the top end. I quickly shifted into 5th and was up to 100 and at the top of the hill before i knew it. moral of the story : if i am going to past on a hill i will down shift before i turn her loose!

Glad to hear you got that all taken care of and you are enjoying it. The frozen weather broke this week and I got out yesterday for 150 miles of good riding. Glad it is finally here.

Have a good weekend Paco and JJB1

Congratulations JJB1. That bike deserves 1st place. Looks great!! Thanks for the pics of that fatboy. Sharp looking fatty. What type of hard mounts did you use for your saddlebags? I just did mine over the weekend. I had over the fender but it didn't work out quite so good. So I went and bought Ghost Brackets and they mad a hell of a difference.

Your bike looks good too. that is the first pics i have seen with the bags. I have a friend that mounted dresser-hard bags on his fatboy. looks pretty damn good. i can't find teh pic. when i do i will try to post it.

oh yeah, i put some Rush mufflers and took some 08 header pipes and made me some true duals last week. sounds pretty good, didn't seem to loose too much performance and i can hear again.!

Thanks guys not bad for an 89 softail Hybred...I swear that thing runs better everyday...anyway the saddle bags I bought from a second hand store for 150.00 they are original Harley bags the good thick ones with the inside casing / shell and the metal brackets are factory mounted to the bags...I beleive they are maade for a wide glide but I bent the rear mount 1/4 inch and walla they a fit a softail...I really hit a home run on the bags I had the lay over with the chrome mounts and I did not like them...these were in excellent shape...Rowlett is 15 miles from dallas and east to longview about 1 1/2 hour drive the event was in Terrel about for miles east as the crow flies...It was the national Genesis ralley they only gave out 1st and second in each class I was in American cruiser with all the heritages softtails dyna and the like...still cant beleive I won..."Christine" used to be a mess when I got her

but she turned out OK actually the evo tranny and primary was running great when I took her out...oh and sorry about the girls the blond in the first pic is my wife and she Certainly would NOT be invited if I knew Girls were gonna be there... whe hew lol...

Goat sweet ride looking better and better how do you have some vibration at 68-70 mph up...really want an ultra for the longer trips that solid mount softail is not bad but after an hour you need a but break ...

Paco, Thanks for the compliments. Was that 2 into 1 really that loud? I would like to see a picture of that fatty with those bags.

JJB1, Does your wife like to ride?? If so than more pictures of you guys riding will be great. Is that your boy on the bike?? Get him a Harley. Sooner the better!! As far as vibration, my bike vibrates the same if it is going 20mph or 80mph. It is so much smoother than my old motor. It is amazing. Weather has been good up here so I have been out and put about 500 miles on already. Goal is 8000 miles this year. We will see.

You guys have a good weekend and ride safe

I just dropped in a ULTIMA 107 in my 89 Ultra. I have been reading all your posts and have a question. I talked to Jireh and they told me they haven't had any issues with the pushrods for about a year and a half. that is when my motor was built. I bought it in 12/06 and first now getting to putting it together, just took it out of the box and dropped it in. I took off the pushrod tubes and you guys are right they are 3/8" pushrods. And they verified the motor has stock OEM lifters. They sold me the 7/16" pushrods you guys had a part # for at a reduced price and I got those. She told me she couldn't just GIVE them to me cause I haven't even started the motor yet and I have no problems to report to them. On top of that my motor is out of warranty being as it had 12 months warranty when I bought it. I told her eveything you guys were talking about and my question is, Should I put in some Crane Big Axle tappets too? She will knock off a little on those too but once again I have no issues yet so she can't give them to me but if there were problems with them I just asoon change them all out.

I just used the pushrods and replaced the one bad lifter,(plunger was weak), ...I really think they had them set to tight at the factory...Iam hitting 1000 miles and no issues and I drive it like I stole it all the time...I wouldnt change them and a lot of guys have done nothing and thiers are running fine//I would adjust the valve lash myself with 2 1/2 turns at 0 lash then your sure its done right...you can go 3 if you like...Iam just an old schooler and would rather my valves float then a rod / lifter/ cam failure...good luck

Pantony,

I have about 5500 miles on my 107 and have had no issues with anything so far. runs excellent and has the top end noise of an evo. i wouldn't worry unless something happens and then confront the problem. just my .02.

Ok heres the low-down, I cut out the 3/8" pushrods cause I know I'm gonna put in the 7/16" pushrods as I have them. I took out one lifter block and the motor already has big axle tappets. Good thing I didn't buy any. They arfe Ultima's made by Johnson lifter, (60's-70's NASCAR fame), They are top quality , excellent machining as is the cam. So that settles that!

It would be great if there was a Wiki, something like Wikipedia, and you all could add your knowledge and experiences to make an on line manual with everything one needs to know about installing an Ultima Motor in and older bike. I think Midwest should sponsor one, it would be great for business and help a lot of people that are considering the upgrade.
