TI woulsd have to say that is normal for most EVO's, at least the ones I know that have been taken care of. My 1991 FXRP had 6,000 miles on it when I bought it and had a little over 46,000 when I crashed it and I also put no money into it other than modifications. However the one I have now, 1998 FXDS, I am going to have to change the poston rings this winter because it is burning about a quart of oil every 2,000 miles. I am assuming this is because the previous owner did not take care of it. I bought it with 11,000 miles back in Dec. '05 and now it has a little over 19,000 miles. THAT is abnormal for an EVO.

Bought mine March of 03, it had 6900 mile on it. Now has 29000 miles. Except for maintenance items had to replace the igniton at 22000. Went with the Daytona Twin Tech. Rude Dog, Not sure about your problem but thought I would mention this. I use to think my 98 wide glide was using oil although I never saw any smoke. It was blowing through the breather. I have found that if I fill it to the cold full mark when cold, I don't lose any. If I fill it to the hot full mark when hot I will lose oil through the breather and I can see it on my ignition cover under my air cleaner and on my battery box. I found the sweet spot on my dip stick.

I picked my '90 FLHS up this past June with 15.5K on it... and just before the incident at the MSF course, she had just gone over 16.1K. I'm still waiting to get her back from the dealer, but I still feel she's low on mileage, and has a lot to give still!

Sold it but I had a very early Evo,'84 model FXRS from 1983. I rode it in for a fresh top end and cams at 100,000 miles while still my daily rider. I sold it at 125,000 miles to a friend who later sold it at nearly 150,000 miles and still running great. Best bike I ever owned!

I have had that problem with my 1991, and like you said, I just had to find the sweet spot on the dip stick, it was about 3/8" below the full mark. I am taking this in stride because it gives me some incentive to go with the .020" over size pistons. Now I just have to decide between Kieth Black or Wiseco. Decisions, decisions, decisions.....

Mine's an '87 flhtc with just over 67,000 mi. I've only had it for about a yr and half, but the prev owner said he did top end/cam at 55,000. I've had to replace timing sensor pick-up, battery, usual maint stuff. It's a strong motor, still a lot of life left in her. Think I'll keep 'er.

1984 FXRT, bought new in '85, ridden ever since. Extensively modified for touring (see it here: http://www.wildwestcycle.com/f_bigtank.html) Swapped out original engine in 2003 for an S&S 107". I'd been trying to get too much power out of 80" to use for too long while touring (built motors: you can ride 'em hard or you can ride 'em long, but you can't ride 'em hard and long). I had to rebuild it from the crank up three times after 110,000. Finally used it up at 150K miles and put in the S&S. Current mileage is 180,000, more or less. And I just bought a Road Glide for the long trips. Pilgrim

84 FLTC built in Aug 83. 111k top end rebuilt at 70k. Chain final drive with one adjustment last 30k miles. I'm sure it will be around long after the 05 is gone.

1998 FXDL-bought used with 4,000 miles in December 1998. Currently with about 20,000 miles. New belt only. 1998 FLHTC-bought new in fall of 1997. Currently has just a little over 180,000 miles. Never been into other than I changed out the INA cam bearing to the Torrington. Super reliable machine! 1998 FLHTCUI-bought used last year with 50,000 miles. Currently has about 57,000 miles. I have had to replace the cylinder base gaskets, transmission pulley, several gaskets pertaining transmission/primary, and replaced the INA cam bearing to the Torrington. I also had to replace the motor mount, IAC motor, and several various little things. The exhaust had a large crack at the Y and had to have that welded. Both vertical and horrizontal innerfaring brackets were broke. Nice bike.....but so far has proven to be a "bike that has to be worked on." 1999 FXDS-Conv.-recently sold. Had around 37,000 troublefree miles, except the cam bearings went out at 7,000 miles and the timing chain tensioners were shot at 20,000 miles.

1991 FXSTS had 45,000 on the speedo when I got her. Met the original owner and found out he had changed the speedo around 10,000 miles. I put over 150,000 miles and about four more speedos on it before anything major happened to the motor. I put a new RevTec 100" in her and that lasted for over 50,000 miles before the main bearing gave it up. Had it rebuilt and she has about 3,000 on the rebuild (I have a second bike now that I bought just before the rebuild was finished with over 8,000 on it) If you take care of them they will last.

1992 FXDBD Should turn 80k this weekend. Sure, it's had its share of work done to it but show me another bike that looks better with that many miles on it. I've put all but 5k of them on it. Thumbnail Image

Sounds to me like you got a good one............1993 Fatboy, 67,000 brought it with 48,000 2 years ago, top end replaced with Eldelbrock heads rpm package. PM brake calipers front and back. Other than breaking a belt at 60,000 and volatage regaltor at 65,000 and tires and brakes and normal maintance everything runs good, added a SE ignition module rebuilt the carb, and replaced the throttle cables last month, will have to do the primary chain soon, no more adjustment left. also a few broken wire's at the connectors behind dash. bike never gets over 205 degrees, even in 105 degree weather. EVO's rule..........

Just got a Heritage a couple months ago. Its got 76000 miles. Seems to run good. Seems to be a little rich and fouling plugs. Its got factory jets and I'm at 6000 ft so I hope some new jets will clear up that problem. Otherwise a great ride.

Just a few months ago I bought my first Harley... a 1993 Heritage. The odometer read 107,300 at purchase. I just turned 110,000 last week. Runs smooth as glass, doesn't leak at all. I was a little worried about high mileage until I did a little research (and discovered this forum). I feel much more comfortable seeing some of you guys with so many miles on your machine.

We have a 1990 FLHTCU that we purchased about 2 1/2 years ago, when it had about 64500 miles on it. It now has about 91725 miles on it and always had something wrong with it, now it's the cruise control, and some minor oil leaks. The top end done at about 78000 miles because it kept fouling plugs (cracked piston ring) in addition, they installed a Crane single fire ignition, Rev Tech chromally adjustable pushrods, 10:1 Weisco pistons, EV-27 cam as well as some head work with bigger valves. At first I had some pinging problems, but the plugs looked great - I adjusted the timing advance on the Crane Hi4 and eliminated the pinging problems and now have plugs that look like they could foul out any time but it runs pretty good, not as good as with the more aggressive curve but certainly better than stock. Prior to the top end I needed to have the shift lever return spring in the transmission replaced, along with a few gears. I also had some oil leaks fixed but got new ones after the top end was done. I keep an eye on things and a few drops of oil on the floor doesn't upset me too much these days. After the the top end was done it developed a problem with blowing some oil out the breather - I installed a crank vent but ended up running a hose to the rear of the bike, the bike doesn't seem to use much oil between oil changes, but sure seemed like a lot when it was running out the air cleaner. I needed to have the intercom/rear speaker amplifier serviced by Radio Sound - but in the end replaced the radio with the Biketronics retro radio kit and added an aftermarket (J&M Integratr 4) intercom so I could hook up a gps. I will probably upgrade it to a J&M bluetooth system next. I am also considering replacing the entire cruise control but not sure if I need to change transmissions to get the newer speed sensor ( older ones used reed switch) and I will need to replace the carb if I upgrade to the newer cruise. Which also adds questions, do I switch to a S&S carb and if I need to switch transmission case ( need speed sensor) can I go with the S&S 6 speed with speed sensor or will that force me to replace the primary and clutch as well as the '90 seems to be a bit different - many questions to think while I am riding.... I often get the urge to just buy a new one, but then when we are out on the road and everything is going good I get the feeling I don't want anything more.

I have a '96 FXDL with 40,670 miles on it. I did take the top end off at 40,000 because the base gaskets were just starting to seep. I put new top end gaskets and a new set of rings in it sense it was apart. Everything looked great inside. Still runs like a top. I have heard that evo's when properly maintained will easily go 100,000 miles.

Mine's an '89 with 33,700 miles. When I got it at the beginning of July it had 30,000 on it. I've since replaced the original carb with a rebuilt CV, replaced the stock air cleaner with an SE, and installed a Spyke ignition. Runs great.

Bought my '97 Fat Boy with 20k on it May '06... last weekend I turned 45k miles on it. That bike runs like a top and loves the road. The only thing that is needing replacing right now is the shocks. I do alot of 2 up riding and the shocks aren't taking it so well. It just leaves me with the decision of do I want a nice new air system or just good standard shocks.... decisions decisions.
