Here's a couple shots of my 1976 XLCH. Loved that bike! Extremely fast and nimble on the mountain roads! I had not trouble at all keeping up (and passing) my friend's new 1200 Sporty. That thing ended up causing me to have a bad knee after kicking it for 14 years. It was well worth it, though! Fun machine. I was running 12.5:1 compression Weisco pistons, ported heads, dual plugs, Accel ignition system w/ Chevy 6-cyl points, SU Eliminator carb (never do that again... switched to an S&S later for much better performance), Andrews Y-grind cams, Andrews tranny gears, can't remember what the pipes were, but it ran best with 1.75 inch drags with small baffles. The older HDs are about the only bikes that run well with drags.... They will KILL a lot of torque on an EVO or TC! I had that old Sporty up to just over 135 mph on several occasions. Kinda scary sometimes.... I had to lean over the tank to keep the front tire on the road. It tended to float when hitting small bumps in the road at very high speeds. That'll keep you awake! :D

These old Ironheads acutally put out more HP then some of the 1200's out there. From 1972-1977 the stock engine was rated at 61hp at 6200 RPM. 1hp per cubic inch. How many Harleys today put out that ratio of HP to CI? The big twins of those years only had 65hp and were much heavier. It is little wonder why these XLCH's won so many races in those days and even a few against some modern bikes of larger displacements. Just think, this is the rating on a stock Ironhead with a stock Bendix carb. With the mods you had in your '76, you were probably putting out even more horses.

This is an 80 sportster that was rebuilt last summer. I've told this story about a ten times on the forums, but...I blew the tranny this past summer. She'll be back on the road one day though...hopefully soon.

I'm new to this forum and figured that I'd say "HI" in here because this is where I'll spend most of my time (unless the bike gets stole or bought and I get my Pan). So I thought I toss a few pics, before and during construction pics of my Mutant '78 XLH 1000, 75th Anniversary Ironhead turned 1250cc Bobber/Drag/Chopper -

Before -

construction -

latest pic with the new fabbed exhaust -

The tank, oil bag, forward controls, seat pan sissybars are all hand made. The bike can be set up single or for two -

as soon as I get the customer paint job out of the garage I'll be able to get back to work on it. Hope to have it all done mid April.

Pat

Here is my 1971 XLCH, purchased in 1973. I began the restoration in 1996 and finished in 2000. I did all of the work myself, wheels using SS spokes, engine and paintwork. I sprayed tank, fenders and frame with PPG Color Concept catalyzed urethane with two clearcoats. The photo was taken in Galveston Texas last November 2005 at the Lone Star Bike Rally. It had 4550 miles on it then.

Hi Blacksmithbilly,
Nice chopper you have there! It reminds me a lot of my first Ironhead (a '69) back in 1976 or 77 except mine was black. I wish I had never sold that bike! Do you know what the rake is on the neck and what length those springers are?

TIA

Dan

Really nice looking bike Wolf. I like the paintwork. Looks like deep purple and white? I am hoping you have the running issue solved...........piniongear
