Default Best Carb

A lot of people swear by the CV carb as the best carb for Evolution motors, but how about on an Ironhead? What is the best carb for this engine? Some say the stock Bendix. I also see a lot of Super E carbs like what I had on mine. What do you all think?

I am also looking for a new carb. It seems most people recommend a Super E or a CV carb with an adapter.

A lot of people have them. But many also say that is is overkill and just turns it into a gas guzzler with no real increase in performance. When I switched from my S&S super E back to the stock Bendix, it runs a lot smoother in low RPMs. I can actually do less then 20mph in 1st with the clutch out now without the risk of the engine stalling.

i run a super e on my 83 ironhead. had some trouble with the float sticking a while back, but that was cause i got the bike which had been sitting for about 10 years and never ran. other than that, it seems to run pretty darn good. gonna have to post some pics of the bike soon as i can figure out this digital camera!

What do you all think of the Mikuni carbs? Is the slide type of the Mikuni and Harley CV carbs really more effecient than the butterfly Bendix and S&S style carbs or is it all hype?

The slide type carbs are more efficient than butterfly types. They operate at a constant velocity (hence, the "CV" carb), and since the air/fuel mixture is kept at this optimum velocity, tuning is simpler and more efficient over the entire rpm range, altitude, load, etc. Better tuning = better efficiency = better mileage & power for a given set-up.

And ya don't need all the computer stuff like with fuel injection! (So even I can work on it.)

Do you have the manifold flange adapter for Ironheads? If so I might be interested in purchasing yours.
