Default carb, hard start, won't idle

Need a little help. Not sure what happened but seems to have come on recently. I have a 97 FXDWG, 60,000 miles, V&H Straightshots, SE air cleaner, and Yost tube in carb. Pipes, AC, and tube have been in at least the last 20,000 miles.

All of a sudden, last 3-5 times I have started the bike over a month, after it starts with the enrichener it won't run unless I leave the enrichener on. It pops, cracks, coughs, farts etc. not sure what to call it. It won't idle but runs great runs once I can get going for 10-15 miles. Except idel, then when I let it idle it seems to idle high and also like 1 cyclinder is dropping out (i think back cyl).

I have cleaned the K&N and changed spark plugs. Apparently not that simple.

Any ideas where to start? Thanks.[/align]

Look for an intake leak, spray wd40 or starter fluid around the intake gaskets and listen for an rpm change.

I can't hardly even get it to run so I think I need to start by going ahead and changing the intake seals.

How hard is this to do? Service manual says to pull the tank, is that necessary?

Budman,

I have the same problem...happened the last three times I rode, coughed sputtered & backfired for 3-10 miles then cleared up. Today, letting it idle to warm up it stalled, then couldn't get it restarted. Backfired like crazy. I was searching for help here when I saw your post.

I have a '96 FLSTC,S&S E carb, Dyna ignition, new plugs. Checked from plugs back, all good. I think I have it narrowed tocarb/intake & the VOES. Had to give it a rest for the day or I was going to light it on fire.

Replacing the intake seals is not a tough job, just a bit time consuming. Taking the fuel tank off it the worst part. If I were ever replacing these again, I would not use Harley Davidson seals but the blue silicone ones made by Jim's. They actually fill all of the voids and will remain resiliant for a long time. In any case; use a slight film of vasoline on the gaskets to help them find their happy spot without being turned or slipping into the port. The first few minutes of engine run will vaporize the vasoline. The intake will practically locate itself due to its shape and location....then just tighten the bolts evenly until tight.

Crossover lines on fuel tanks are a pain!

I have the same problem. My bike starts up then runs like crap, I use the enricher to keep it running push it back in and keep giving it gas. It seems to have no power, lugging and the motor is shaken all over. When the bike warms up it seems to run okay. My question is I noticed that there is some black stuff around my manifold does that indicate that there is a leak. how do I check. I have a 98 super glide is it difficult to do I have 40,000 miles on her . I t seems to have happen just like that. Thanks for your help.

The 'black stuff' is probably an indication of a leak. That's intake slop that works back into the manifold. HD engines have so much overlap in valve timing that the ingested fuel is mixed with the chamber wet exhaust mix and is blown back through the almost closed intake valve at low speed. So anyhow, that is probably what you are seeing at the intake joint. Test it the same way; at slow idle using WD40 or a small amount of propane through a piece of tubing and 'steer' it around the joint. The engine will get a tiny bit 'happier' if it pulls the additional mix in through a leak. These intake leaks are very common and are the cause of about 75% of the poor running Harley engines out there, and over time, they will do very much harm to the engine....

Why pull the tank?

You don't need to pull the Tank. Do what JakeSabre did.......

I guess I am worried about total view of what I'm doing and proping the tank up leaves a bit to be desired. If you don't have to remove it - more power to ya! Removing it it a pain in the ars anyhow!
