View Full Version : Just how many FXR's are there?

I went to a rally this weekend, Thunder Beach in Panama City, Fl, and only saw 3 other FXR's.

Wondered if anyone had the numbers on how many of these were produced? In all variations (s, t, c, ect.)?

Guess it's been a while since I've been out. Had mine for almost 20 years. Used to see them all the time. I knew they were getting more scarce, but, man... only 3 in a couple thousand bikes? Most of the bikes at this rally were 5 years old or newer. Is ANYBODY still riding this classic? Am I the only one that loves the way this thing corners? Hadn't seen an FL yet that can keep up on a twisty road. Ah well, guess it makes me love it that much more. Will never part with it.

It's not just FXR's. How many Evo's did you see? Harley sold a ton of them but it's becoming a rarity to see them on the street. Hard to believe people are just letting them sit, cuz they sure aren't throwing them away.

I've only had mine a few months and will never part with it. I've been trying to find the actual production numbers, but haven't had much luck. I assume that they have made many more Dyna's than FXR's but I don't know for sure. I do know that I've never heard anyone that owned one that didn't like it.

I hear you. A good friend turned me on to them about 20 years ago. My first and last Harley. Wouldn't own any other bike.

I believe the EVO powered FXR was the best Harley ever designed. I am like others though....seeing less and less of them. Less and less EVO's out there as well.

Most have gone Twin Cam[:@]......they can have their Twinkies anyways.

1984 FXRT......best Harley I ever owned!!!!!!! Loved that machine!

I still see a few shovels and evosat a local indy shop I go to that specializes in old iron. At the HD dealers all I see are twin cams.....boring.

How would you compare the ride and handling of the FXR with the Dyna?

How would you compare the ride and handling of the FXR with the Dyna?

The ride of the FXR is more comparable to the FLH models. They basically have the same rubber mounting system. The Dyna uses a totally different rubber mounting system, it works well.

I've owned several FXR's and severalDyna's over the years.....I personally prefer the FXR over the Dyna. I feel like I get more vibration at idle from the FXR than the Dyna. However, I feel like I get less vibration from the FXR while traveling down a highway.

As for handling, the Dyna line handles great and so does the FXR. On the open highway, I could not really tell a difference. However, at really slow speeds....the FXR seemed much lighter. The FXR just seems easier to manuever than the Dyna at slow speeds. Perhaps, the FXR had a lower center of gravity?

The FXR never captured the classic look of a Harley. Many thought it was too Japanese looking when they first came out. People lovedthe ride, but didn't appreciate the look. They also didn't quiet sell as well as they were hoping either....many were either riding Softails and Electra Glides. The FXR simply didn't have the look.

They started designing the Dyna in the late 1989. This bike had a totally different look from the FXR. It looked alot like the original Lowrider. It had the classic Harley look that everyone was after. The Dyna was a hit when it first came out. It was outselling the FXR.

Both are fine bikes.....but my favorite still stands as the FXR being the winner. I've been looking at several FXR's for the past few months......just waiting on the right one to catch my eye. Right now, it is a tossup between a 1992 FXRT or the 1993 FXR Lowrider with the anniversary paint job on it. Hard choice....

The FXR was and still is a fine machine.

I bought a 1987 FXR SP in 1999. First Harley I have ever owned and have been very happy with it since. I ride as often as I can and can easily spend the entire day riding comfortably.

I have an 06 Dyna Wide Glide and an 84 FXRP.I have done a little to the FXR such as carb, cams, lifter and Supertrapp 2 into 1 ss pipes.
The Dyna has V&H Big shots,Doherty Air cleaner and dyno tuned with a SERT.
The Wide Glide is more comfortable to ride due to my height and the forward controls.
The FXR is faster, handles better and stops better.Ithas the wet clutch but the same hard to pull controls. The wide glide is a one finger lever deal. The FXR you need a handful but itll jerk your eyes out of thier sockets if you need to stop.
In the rain that FXR will whup anythings ass.Ive had it sideways a few times and it has to be one of the easiest to recover from bikes Ive ridden. If you get in a jam you just roll off the throttle and it settles right down quick. The Wide Glide feels like once its gone its gone.I may be wrong but
I dont want to find out

Sandhog,

I just put the hydrolic cluth conversion on my 87 FXR, I have a barnett clutch in it and the lever used to be a pain (literally), when sitting in traffic like on a poker run. Now it feels like air.

In response to sandhog,
I have a 93 FXRS-SP and it handles fantastic, and it also stops very well. I have a road king also and find that the FXR is more enjoyable to ride even on long trips unless I am riding 2 up.
The 31deg rake makes the bike track like it is on rails.
I am in the process of installing floorboards and replacing the forward controls. May never ride the king after this.
Also nothing sounds like an Evo the sound of the TC is disapointing.

I've ridden an Ultra and my FXR back to back, and I have to agree about the ride being similar, with the only difference being the front end has a lot more feel to it on the FXR.

When I park my wife's Shadow and the FXR side by side, you can see why they talk about the styling being similar, although, I suspect the Shadow was modeled on the FXR. Take a look at the frame and side panels in particular.

The FXR was one of the best handling and riding bikes HD ever made. The FXRT was a really good touring bike, it was just a little ugly.

Yea, the fairing just didn't quiet look right on a Harley. It did however work extremely well with very little buffeting. I have been told that the design of that fairing was originally designed for the Touring version of the project Nova. It looked right on the Nova.....but not quiet right on a classic Harley.

I just bought the wife a 1999 fxr2 first harley cvo. it is an awesome bike and with all the chrome you could want. I heard her tell one of her friends "we are keeping this one forever" She won't put the miles on it like I do on my 97 ultra.
someday I hope it will be worth a pile of money. If not we sure are enjoying it.

I`m selling my 07 FXDWG. A month agoo I bought 1993 FXRS-SP and for about a weekshe is in my garage (strange but bike had to cross ocean - I live in Europe).I was looking for FXR for about a year. My new ride has "only"38k miles, lowered suspension (I will have toreplace the rear shock - they are about 10" max 11" long[&:]), hypercharger (soon on ebay- I want go buy S&S carb), drga pipes (I know it hurts performance but the sound is so nice) and some other stuff.

I had an 87 FXRS since 1990 and will not part with it. Flowed and milled heads, 9.5:1 compression, kick ass cam to match, python pipes and an S&amp\\;S carb. Runs like it was shot out of a gun. Great little bar hopper. Picked up an 06 Roadking to keep it company in the garage.

It was hundreds $ less to produce the Dyna so that is why they wen to it and they got the battery instead of the triangle but really the FXR is probably better. I also don't see them on the road at all...here I had a friend tell me that many Evos went to europe.
how do i post a picture of mine?
