Default Gearing on a 77 fxs shovel

Hi
My friend has a 77 1200 fxs shovel with 51 tooth rear sprocket , he would like to gear it higher without having to slip clutch on pull away .
Has any of you chaps had any experience with this !!! he is thinking of the 49 rear tooth change .
Normally around that time jap bikes had lower gearing than the same european models, was this also done on harleys ?
He wants to keep wheels /gearbox etc standard .
Also how rare is this bike ?

hmm, dunno about the gears or the production numbers, but I do know that 1977 was the first year the low rider was introduced by harley.

49 tooth will be no problem. Used to run 24T front/49T rear on a '78 FLH 3 speed. Didn't have to slip the clutch on it.

Following from Bruce Byner's HD site http://mypage.iusb.edu/~bbryner/hrlypage.html

FXS - 1200cc, 3,742 manufactured.

FXS Low Rider - First year for this model. Gun Metal Gray paint, 3.5 gallon tank w/tach and speedo mounts, cast aluminum Morris wheels, (19"-F, 16"-R), Showa fork, raked frame, sportster front end, shorter rear shocks, dual front brakes, highway pegs, oil cooler, black crinkle finish on crankcases, barrels & heads, polished covers, flat drag bars on curved-back risers
