Default 2007 Ultra – LOW speed wobble – Idea’s?

I’m on what I thought would be a great long distance ride combining business with pleasure. Start from Columbus OH area to San Diego riding most of Route 66. Then meet 2 friends in SD and ride around the mountains and desert in Southern California and up to Lake Havasu, AZ, return to SD and attend 4-1/2 days of business meetings, and finally head back home detouring through Austin, TX to visit family for a couple of days.

The problems started Tuesday afternoon. I was coming to a stop light at the on-ramp to the interstate and the handlebars started wobbling. I thought this was strange but didn’t think too much of it as I was loaded down pretty heavy for my 3 week trip. Once at highway speed I didn’t notice any pronounced wobble as I was fighting a head wind and there were 20-25 MPH gusting cross winds. Handlebar wobble again when I was coming to a stop for fuel. Also I shook the bars back and fourth at a dead stop and the bars would continue to oscillate for almost a second after I stopped shaking them, kind of an aftershock. The first thing I thought of was my tire pressure, so I checked the pressure and it was still at the 40 psi I had set before I left for this trip. I bled some air out to 36 psi and still had the low speed wobble at my next fuel stop.

Wednesday morning 10/10/07 I stopped at the first HD dealer I could find (Ozark HD in Lebanon, MO) and they were kind enough to look at the bike right away. Well it’s now 2 days later and no solution. The Techs here have checked and/or replaced everything they could, including: neck bearing & races, front & rear wheel/tires, swing arm pivot bearing, front forks alignment/oil, motor mounts, removing saddlebags & tour-pak to eliminate weight distribution issues. Everything front to rear is aligned correctly, drive belt is good. They’ve adjusted the front-end free swing from the normal 3 swings to 2 and on the advice of HD Tech. Support loosened it to 4 swings per the 2008 spec. and that made it worse. I must say that the staff and tech's here at Ozark HD have been wonderfull, setting a side scheduled work to address my problem and have tried everything they could to fix this problem.

HD Tech. Support now wants me to leave my “unsafe bike” with the dealer so it can be inspected and ridden by their regional rep. some time next wek and so far has offered no assistance in providing replacement transportation. This is something I hope to resolve this morning since I must be in San Diego for my business meetings next week.

I’ve seen a large number of posts and Google search hits on high speed wobble and the one post here about low speed wobble, but that seems to be due to low tire pressure. Has anyone else heard of or experienced my problem, and hopefully a resolution?

I can't think of anything else you haven't tried, I'am certainly curious what the problem is. They sure seem to be going the extra mile for you, usually when tech's can't find the problem they tell you it's normal,LOL! Good luck and keep us posted.

I do remember seeing a post somewhere that mentioned uneven brake pad pressure/warped rotor(s).

I just started having the same thing on my 06EGC w/ 10k miles on it. Just at low speed, don't have to touch the brakes. Checked tire pressure and everything else I could think of. Haven't taken it to the stealer yet figuring they'd say it was normal. Hope you let us know what they find.

The dealer thought it might be rotors or pads so they put a new wheel/tire from another Ultra on my bike and had same problem. The wobble isn't just on deceleration either, on the last few road test rides it's been a constant wobble with the cruise set at 32 MPH.

Did they just change one tire and wheel? I just got to thinking that maybe it's a rear tire with a bad belt in it.

They've changed both front and rear wheels/tires twice. Actually the first time they switched the rear (from a used Ultra) it made it worse. The bike tracks true and pulley/belt are aligned straight per the specs.

Headset bearings need to be adjusted?.

check tire pressure run 40 rear 38 front
check shock pressure run around 15# to 20# depends on load.

I have the same problem with my 07 Ultra. When bike is fully loaded with passenger front end at low speeds feels sloppy. First noticed it leaving a motel and going slowly over a pothole, tire turned and handle bars didn't. When stopped I can turn handle bars back and forth quickly and tire does not keep up. Feels like it needs a brace. Took it to the dealer in Rapid City and they said it was normal.
