Default Open Primary Dangerous?

Ok, I like the look of the big twin primary rather than one on..say..a Sportster.

But then the Open primary came out and that's cool too.

Anyone ever get their pants caught in it? Or ever heard of any stories where someone got injured? The belt breaking and shoot up your leg. I don't have a belt guard but I've seen what a chain snapping does to my crankcase.

And I've seen several riders who always seemed to sport that "chewed up pantleg" look.

Look at it this way - it can be dangerous, but only if you get your leg, toes, fingers, in where they ought not be.

Anybody remember seeing open primaries before belt drives? One ol' boy in an MC in Ohio back in the '60s had a ratty ol' ULH with an open primary. That sucker was noisy!

It's been a very long time since I have had a primary on a custom that wasnt open, and have sold alot of bikes with open's. I personally dont think they are dangerous, and I am putting an open primary on my new Road Glide build as well. But if i had a nickel for every time I got ask that at a rally, I could retire.

Lots of them running around. Only thing to remember is to keep your hands away from it while the engine is running .

I've seen guys do the rubber band around the pant leg when riding them.

Back when I rode BMX as a youngin' I used to clip my pant leg to keep it out of the sprocket.

I see the only draw back being the noise.

Dangerous, depends on who you are.

I mean, that's half of Bill Engval's act, isn't it?!

=P

(PS, You get what you pay for when it comes to belts/chains.)

My chopper has a closed primary, but my dad's has an open BDL. Never had a problem, but the damn thing sure is noisy!! I'd put one on my chopper if I had the extra dough.
