In the past two months we have replaced about 10 heel-toe shifters and shift shafts that have stripped on a variety of touring models.  I was wondering if any other dealerships or private owners have seen this same problem.  We keep getting more and more every few days.  I haven't heard anything from tech service yet about this.

Thanks

Thought I was the only one with this problem. It was always the toe shifter. Finally gave up and removed the heel shifter and moved the toe out on the shaft. Takes some geeting used to after using the heel for many years.

Could it be that the bolts are working loose?

Seems to be a issue with 07's and 08's.

If you have the room, try this from Dewey's:

I have one on my Dyna with forwards and love it.  Well made.  I don't know if it will fit a bagger though.

I found that problem on a chopper with a hard shifting Revtech 6 speed.  Turns out that the forward controls were made from a low grade aluminum alloy.  It didn't help that the Revtech is a bitch to get into neutral but I'm not surprised that this would happen with the newer HD's.  Try using a little red loctite when tightening down the socket head cap screw.  Just make sure you have it positioned properly first as this is permanant strength and you may need to use some heat to remove them if you ever need to again.  Not sure what the torque is for that screw but it should be in the manual?

Try this: get a good grade eight socket head screw use red loc-tite on it, use loc-tite stud and bearing mount on the shaft. When you tighten it down make sure that the space is not bottoming out and stopping it from getting a good purchase on the shaft. This worked for us in all but one case. The guy was 275+ and very heavy footed on the shifter.

Guys

Do not I repeat not use red loctite. It has very few applications on a motorcycle and this isnt one of them. Blue loctite will hold fine when torqued to the correct specs, but will allow removal to grease the shaft every two years or so. The most important thing to do is fix it before it becomes a problem. Remove the bolt, loctite it and torque it back down before it works loose, because once it works loose and slightly rounds the spline toothing it will be harder to sort out.

It is OK to use red loc-tite in the stock shifter as it is not aluminum, on aluminum use blue. Go to the Loc-tite site they have a lot of info as to what to use depending on bolt size and type of duty etc.

My 99 Road King stripped the splines at the transmission two years ago. The replacement was not a tight fit. I closed it up in a vice a little before installing new one. I had to lightly tap it on.

Wild Bill,  Notice I said use only a little red loctite.  It is designed to be used for this application.  If however you are tightening a smaller screw/bolt or with dissimilar metals, then it would not be acceptable.
