A guy I work with told me about this - his son is an engineer.

When the batteries for your battery powered tools get older and don't take a charge or discharge too quickly, you can give them a second life. The batteries need to be zapped by higher voltage for a few seconds and it will "reset" something internally and allow the batteries to take a charge again.

I have 4 - 18v Ryobi batteries that "went bad" and they've been in the garage waiting for me to get them to the proper place for recycling. I decided to try this to see if it really worked. I'll be dammed. I've got 4 batteries sitting on the bench that took a charge.. I am now in the process of discharging them to recharge them again. I never would have believed this if I hadn't tried it myself.

I took my 2 -12v boat batteries and connected a + to a -, then connected a wire to the remaining + and - terminal creating a 24v "battery".  I touched the 24v leads to the corresponding leads on the batteries for a few seconds and Bingo !!  I put the batteries in the charger and the light showed red meaning charging.

Too cool.

I have a few DeFault 18v that are 'dead'.  Now I just need to find a couple of batteries to try this on...

I tried it on a few De Walt 18v batteries a while back using my wire welder.  It brought 2 back from the dead but it was short term.  Make sure you get the polarity correct.

I just stick mine in the freezer for a day and they come out just like new - don't know how/why.  Just remember to seal them up so the moisture doesn't get to them.

I was looking for some repair info for my 3 18v Dewalt batteries. I saw one ebook online for $12.95, and one for $3.99 at www.nicadbatteryfix.com For that price I took the risk. Its documented well, and has detailed instructions with some good pictures for my 60yr old eyes.

The repair has worked for me now for 3 months on all 3 batteries {saved me over $100}. Its like what is tallked about above, but I would be carefull without the proper instructions, NiCd cells can explode if "juiced" to much with too many amps, or for the wrong amount of time. Just my suggestion, be carefull!
