Just wanted to share some pics of my trailer project. I would rather ride but sometimes lodging was an issue when we got there. Thus, the inspiration for this trailer. Its a 14 ft cargo trailer I had a guy build for me. I totally finished the interior: insulation, sheeting, paint, lights, it has an RV converter for 110 power, 12 volt RV water pump and a stainless bar sink, the queen size bed folds down in the back, a fold up table on the front left side for cooking and such. I mounted 2 propane tanks on tongue. I also built a rack on top and use it to attach a canvas awning that has withstood the winds of Sturgis and Red Lodge, MT. I still need to mount a rooftop AC unit when spring gets here. A porta-potty hidden inside a wooden box with hinged lid and an outside shower cabana makes things pretty comfortable. This trailer will haul 2 full size baggers. Total on this project including trailer is about $8,000 and i use it for camping with or without the scooter.

great idea... I knew a guy that converted an old 60's model travel trailer into a toy hauler by cutting the back end out of it and making a ramp gate. wish I had pictures of it.

I always say - "whatever it takes"!!

I'd like to see a pic of the awning you made if that would not be too much trouble.  I have a 2003 Classic trailer that has roof racks like yours and a factory camper kit like this:
http://www.hayestrailersales.com/products/trailers/classic_camper_hauler_trailer.shtml

I just bought my trailer which is 8x14 and was set up kind of strange with barn doors.  The previous owner said he did it on purpose so he did not have to look at the tire tracks when he was sitting in it.  Whatever.  I bought some good ramps and installed some removable chocks.  Just towed it up north and put it away for the winter.  Will use it to go places in the spring.

Thanks in advance for the pics.

Mark

I've often thought about doing something like that with an old UPS truck or something similar.

I have been looking for pics of the awning. I'm afraid I might have accidently deleted them from camera. I do have one pic from Red Lodge Rally which shows the original awning idea. This was made with a cheap plastic tarp. The basic concept is still the same. I just upgraded to canvas with re-inforced grommets. I used some light wall 1" tubing, slotted the bottom side so it would sit on the edges of the top rack. I attached the tarp (canvas or plastic) to the tubing using heavy plastic snap ties (for electrical wires) thru the grommet holes. In this pic I used two upright poles with a spike in the top thru the grommet and tied down to ground stakes. The improved version has a pole that sits on top of these two upright poles allowing you to add another tiedown rope or two in the middle. This tightens the awning up. I found that ratchet straps worked really good in place of ropes for tiedowns. Incidently, I already had the upright poles and long pole for my wall tent, but you could use other types of material.

Thanks Geezer.  That was very helpful.  I may use a slightly different variation on the idea using a 10x10 party awning as a frame and the side walls to attach to the roof rack.

you are welcome. one other thing. Typically the factory RV awnings have a very bad time with any wind. I believe the factor on this awning that makes it different is the gap between top of trailer and the top edge of awning. If you can tell on the pic, there is about 8 or 10 inches of gap. This allows wind to escape, decreasing the "ballon effect" that tends to tear factory awnings apart. Good Luck on your project.
