you will just need a single point breaker assm, and a single point coil, not a real big deal to change over. the only problem with the dual point system is keeping the timing between cyls. right. all it takes is a little variation in point dwell to messit up. if you have a timing light and know how to set the timing. (on both cyls.) just keep what you have, its a very rare set up ( that really wasnt needed)
The dual point setup is a true single fire ignition which allows longer coil saturation thus producing a stronger spark ,firing once (720 degrees flywheel rotation) on the compression/power stroke, while single point fires the coil twice per 720 degrees(waste spark)
The Dual points also allow for moreaccurate timing of each cylinder independant of each other
yes you are correct, but we are talking panhead here, better? when it comes to old Harley's, simplicity is always better. how much damage can improper timing between cyls. cause? I have seen lots of triumphs and Norton's with holes inthe pistons caused by improper timing between cyls. I don't see too many mechanics that will spend the time setting everything up right on the old stuff anymore, and with points just not worth the risk. But.........the setup works and works well if you know what you are doing and are willing to take the time to do the proper adjustments every 3000 miles.
I guess I'll have keep the single setup on for now that the builder put on and store thedual point setupfor future, if I can get it back. I hear you have to pull the front jug to get the breaker assmbly out. I Just have to figure out the wiring now for a single coil and how to mount it. Any recomended coils? It's all new to me and after 4 years I am determined to hear it run and ride it this summer.
you don't need to buy another coil you can wire the dual coils so they fire as a single. the old two point system was not the best it had something to do with the way the advance wts were mounted after 1970 the advance wts were mounted different
I don't think the dual points have advance weights as it is manual advance. I am interested in being able to use the existing coils. Do you have an idiot's guide? I'm not very good with this stuff. I can put it back the way it was but not modify.
With a single style point set up run the wire that leaves the distributor to the negitive side of both coils Feed bat positive to the + on the coils(some coils don't mark neg or positive) if thats the case let me know. I'm pretty sure I can tell you how one can use a dual pts distrib eliminate one set of pts and get ya going Look at the cam in the distributor and see if there is a narrow lobe for front cylinder timing !
