Good Byes are Tough
The son headed back today. We were fortunate in a way as his buddy that was supposed to pick him up yesterday in OKC bailed on him. He was supposed to head out yesterday and spend yesterday afternoon and today at his buddies folks house in OKC then drive back to SHeppard AFB on New Years Day. He wound up spending an extra day here at home and I got to go out for lunch with just me and him. Just got back from the airport. Took twice as long to get there due to the snow. Southwest computers show they are boarding now.(Actually, had a coffee in the driveway in the snow and just heard the plane take off) I did good and almost pulled it off without tears. A simple handshake and a pat on the bi-cep and him giving me a smile was when the tears started and that is how the goodbye ended. Glad to have had him home , sad to see him leave. Hopefully he will be back for a week, end of Feb before he heads off for 2 yrs.
Even though he is 6'4 and 24 yo I still see my little boy when I look into his steel blue eyes. Tonight and tomorrow when you raise a glass to toast away the old year and bring in the new, take a minute to remember our service men and woman who keep us free so we may raise those glasses.

teared up myself reading your post,,,my son spent the day with me yesterday...we had a great time being togather ..he heads back on wed...i get to see him new years day..that bittersweet feeling is hard...quess we just try to make the best of the too short time we have with them

I'm right there with you guys.... my baby girlreturns to South CarolinaThursday. she's already been told there's a 98% chance she'll be in Iraq by summer.

You got it, NHHog. Probably one of the worst "Dad jobs" there is, saying good-bye. Your son, and everyone else who has loved ones in the service, is in my family's thought and prayers. Yours too, mslater, Aviator and all the rest. Make sure that your kids know how much the real American's appreciate and support their service. You should all be proud toof raised such fine young people. Not every kid sees the 'big picture' and realizes that service to one's country is one of the greatest things you can do. I commend you all for your fine parenting.

Thanks folks it is much appreciated. I can't walk a step in my boys shoes. I did my service but I was young with no job, newly marriedand he was a baby. He went in Memorial day weekend this year. He is now wrapping up tech school. In civilian life he was a 23 year old Master Electrician making some great money for his agewhen he joined ( 2006-50k on the books and we know side jobs for tradesman are lucrative off the books). He will be heading to places unknown for 4 to 6 months at a time from his home base in Japan starting in June. He heads to Japan for 2 yrs in March.

Best wishes to your son. Our young men and women in the serivce are our very best. My son is home from Marine Corp boot camp and heading to MCT then his MOS school. We missed him so much and are also glad to have him home until the 14th. They'll always be our babies no matter how old they get. My boy is 6'4" 190lb but hes still my little boy. We will pray for your sons safe return to your home soon and thank him for us for his service to our country.

Again thanks for the prayers and thoughts. He made it safe back to Sheppard, as he sent me a text message from the limo at the airport. He was delayed all the way and just made the ride back to base. If he had missed it the next one was at 7PM. That would have had him up and awake for 18 hrs. I hate air travel and the delays but I have become a good plane sleeper due to my line of work.
Ace- funny both our boys are 6'4 but there is a 40 lb difference, mine is a bean pole!! I hope you enjoy the time he is home and tell him we are proud here in NH for what he is doing and that all our servicemen and woman were in our toast last night and will be in our prayers today at New Years dinner.
