Who has any thoughts on Best NFL coaches of all time. This Patriot Fan says the class act of all time was Tom Landry. I respect Tony D on Colts, too. Class act. Has endured alot of personal/family trails and still can coach and retain perspective.

Historically, I'd have to say Paul Brown, or Vince Lombardi. More recent, Bill Walsh & Mike Ditka, if you take away the Saints years.

Belichick, Walsh, Landry, Lombardi and Shula are my top five. Dungy is close but hasn't reached that level, Ditka given N.O. - was it him or was it the team? Parcels and Jimmie Johnson had the potential but messed it up, and Madden is probably in that class (something like the 3rd highest winning percentage) but didn't stay in coaching long enough.

Eyeball you for some reason are so against the Patriots and Belichick. It makes you look silly! The 07 Pats will go down as one of the best teams and BB will go down as one of the best coaches ever. You bring up Cleveland, what about what he did for Parcells. The fact is Parcells only won the Superbowls because Belichick was his defensive coordinator. What does 3 superbowls get him in your eyes? What will you say if they win no. 4...5...etc. Notice I said if!!! I am a football fan who understands the game ...

Vince Lombardi: he had a dynasty before steroids and high tech cheating. Pro football was still more of a sport than a big business.

Most any coach will look great when he is surrounded by a good team, and good staff. Belichick is looking great in N.E. He looked real bad at Cleavland, and that's a fact. Bill Cowher was the winningest coach during his time in Pittsburgh(I'm pretty sure of that, but could be wrong). Who knows what he'll be like when he starts coaching for another team...and we all know he will. Same goes for any one else past or present, or future. I'm a Steeler fan so I'd say Chuck Knoll or Bill Cowher, just because of the wins Cowher amassed, and the total domination during the 1970s era in the NFL for Knoll.

JEEZ, I did not mean to start a war here. Here I am up in New Hampshire and loved Tom Landry. In the NFL, as in other aspects of life, winning is everything. However, occasionally a person comes along that wins and dignifies the sport. Landry WAS that type of coach. Jimmy J seemed to be the opposite. Bill B has yet to be judged on character--although some will say he is NOW a scoundrel. On the other hand, he seems to be VERY able to manage the personalities of men who would otherwise be ego maniacs. Then he seems to mold them into a TEAM dedicated to a singular ppurpose with very few show offs. I do not see much Dennis Rodman syndrome there.--Humility.

ORIGINAL: swestbrook60 I would have to say Lombardi and Landry, with Landry squeeking out a win. Not only did Tom Landry have 20 winning seasons in row, some of which with some pretty sub-par players, but he was an innovator. Landry had the ability to adjust the offensive and defensive schemes to match the player's talents the best. Then you have the fact that Tom Landry was a class act in his suit and fedora, certainly better than wearing the same old tattered sweatshirt every game. I have to disagree. Lambardi never had nearly the money to work with to attract talent that Landry did. This was way before they had spending caps.

If Lombardi was the best of his era, competing with coaches with the same limitations as he had, and Landry and Walsh, the best of theirs competing again with coaches, management etc. that had similar situation to work under - why can't we compare their relative ability to coach a team?

There is a big difference between "cheating" and getting "caught". If you ain't cheating then you sure as heck ain't trying hard enough! Every dam coach has tried to get a one up on the opponent one way or another from the start of time until now! I don't care who you are talking about they either bent the rules or looked the other way or had their assistants or towel boy do the dirty work. The only reason you didn't hear about it was they didn't get caught and Belichick did! If it was stealing plays to not noticing steroid abuse or filming practices it dosn't matter every coach does something to gain an upper hand, you can forget the rah! rah! go team let's play fair bullcrap, in pro sports it will never happen and now it is trickling down to college and highschool sports. They have been able to cover their tracks for a long time now but the media wouldn't walk away and now it is all spilling over from refs and players betting on games to olympic athletes and tour de france cyclists and ball players doping up, What is the surprise that a coach got busted spying? Yea sorry Pats fans but your hero got busted, but I give him credit for trying. So in the big picture I would say you have a dam good coach and if you don't want him send him to minnesota, PLEASE!!!!

The thing is that Lombardi didn't have the same limitations as other coaches. Green Bay is not a very high profit francise in comparison to most others. This was in the pre-cap era when you could only spend what the team was able to bring in. The majority of coaches had a big money advantage over him and he still managed a dynasty.

Damm Billy, you sure are a trouble maker!! Stay up in NH and stopping lobbing hand grenades! :) Choosing the best coaches is really subjective but here goes. Lombardi and Landry at the top then a group below including Shula, Belichek, Walsh , Chuck Noll, Clive Rush and then it gets really difficult to pick and choose.

First you dogged the hell out of my Red Sox until they cameback from 3-1 to once again knock your "Tribe" out of the playoffs to only sweep the next 2 series all on their way to their 2nd title in 4 years! Man...you left that thread in a hurry! Then you told me way back in week 4 or 5 that no way would the Pats go undefeated...and they did as I told you they would! And guess what else...they're gonna win both their playoff games & the ANOTHER Super Bowl! Don't think so??? Just sit back & enjoy history in the making by the greatest team to ever toss the pigskin around! Belichick IS the greatest coach of all-time! In just 8 seasons with the Pats, he's 91-37 in the regular season & a remarkable 12-2 in the playoffs with what will soon be 4 titles in 7 years! Re-defining the word DYNASTY! In those 8 years he's won almost 3 times the amount of games he's lost! Stop hatin' us New Englanders & give credit where credit is due.
