Here are some new inserts I picked up from a guy out of Quebec that cast them himself.

Now I started to do a little fitting to see what kind of problems I am going to be running up against. So far it dosn't look too bad.I knew I was going to have to custom mount the rear fender, exhaust and seat. Here is a quick mock upI did.

Right now I have it off to an Independant to rivet the rachet plate / install the jack shaft for the kick start I want on the bike for the "nifty" factor.

If you're going to leave that clutch lever on the right side, you may want to lengthen it. Looks like it may hinder you on a right turn right now. Love the pipes. Where did they come from?

Rich - Clutch is just there just for convenience. I am not sure what I am going to put on for bars yet. Those are a set of $10 pull backs from ebay I bought just to see how they looked. Once I fit the seat and fwd controls, I will decide on bars. Probably have to go with a straight T-bar vs the pull backs.

Pipes are mfg. by Paughco. They are their upsweep goose cuts for rigid frames. They also have straight cuts, slash cuts and fish tails. Heat shields are available for them and I believe you can also get them ina shot gun formation as well.

Installed a new primary chain adjuster and primary cover / insert last night.

I will take a bunch of pics this week end and post them next week. Some hurdles I have had to overcome since I last checked in:

- Wiring was a mess so I totally re-wired the whole bike.
- Had an alignment problem with my rear wheel in the frame. Turned out I had to re-laced the rear wheel to correct the alignment.
- I bought a set of forward controls to install on the bike. Turns out with the wide tank, my stumps for legs are just a little too short to reach. So I had to go back to the mids. Not really all that bad though as it may be easier to get my butt up off the seat if I happen to hit a big pot hole with that hard tail suspension. (Actually cheated and have some rubber stoppers for a bit of suspension under the seat)

I painted the bike this past week and all the cosmetic stuff is about done.http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/images/smilies/clap1.gif I am waiting on a weather proof automotive style 5 pin wire connector so I can finish the wring job to the rear taillight. This way I just have to unbolt 4 bolts and disconnect a wire connector and I can remove my whole rear fender.

I filled the oil tank and primary case with 50 wt oil last night. I will see when I get home how good I sealed up the primary cover.http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/images/smilies/rolleyes1.gif

This week end I plan on ripping apart the carb and do a re-build. Then re-mounting the carb, exhaust and run the fuel lines.

Waiting on a hydraulic re-build kit for my front brake (Brand new and it won't build up any pressure) and a fuel filter then I should be ready to turn the key. (may have to use a lawn mower fuel filter I have on the shelf temporarily if I can't control the itch to get her going)

OK. Here's a pic of the primary cover all sealed up with peg / shifter installed.

The good news is that there are no oil leaks under the bike and I got the exhaust installed.

The bad news........NEXT STUMBLING BLOCK - I ASSumed I had a Bendix carb and bought a Bendix rebuild kit. http://xlforum.net/vbportal/forums/images/smilies/doh.gif Apparently somewhere along the line, the carb has been upgraded to a Keihin. Only markings I could find on it are "AMF Harley Davidson", "Japan", what I thought was a star but is actually a "K" and on the motor side mount flange "0F07". Anybody know what year this carb is for?

That boils down to I have not got it running yet....

HOWEVER, here are a couple more teaser pics on what I have done.

I installed the alternator and I had to find a place to install the new voltage regulator. I thought where the old one was would be a good place so here it is.

The electronic ignition module I installed (Crane Hi-4) enabled me to hook up a VOES - also highly recommended by Mick and his Independant. Here it is mounted to the upper engine mount and hooked up under my tank along with a new oil pressure gauge I hooked up as well.

I JB Welded a short piece of metal brake line into a gas fitting nipple then threaded that into air cleaner backing plate. This is so you can hook up the vacuum line for the VOES. You can see the small hole just front of the air cleaner cover mounting stud at the lower right corner. I would of liked it closer to the opening of the carb but there was already a hole in the backing plate at that position, so I went ahead and used it.

NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE PROPER PLACE TO INSTALL THE VACCUM PORT FOR THE VOES. SEE LATER ON IN THE THREAD WHERE I RE-WORKED THE VOES HOOK UP.

Here is the fabricated seat / rear fender mount I used to mount my new solo seat. I thought I should try some rubber stoppers to add a bit of suspension to support my 260 lb butt.

I am picking up the weatherproof automotive connector so I can finish my wiring to the rear tail light this afternoon and apparently I have to make some decisions on what I am going to do about a carburetor. Any suggestions? - new, rebuild the Kiehin (after I find out what it is)?

Most people will tell you the Kiehin is too big for an XL. Plus there were 4 or 5 versions used during the '80's. Get a CV, parts are widely available. You can get a rebuild one for about $100. You also need a mounting plate.

Well. I went ahead and made arrangements for a new Bendix carb that I will be picking up this afternoon. Hopefully I will have time to install it tonight.

I hard wired in my weather-proof connector between the frame and rear fender. Here it is hard wired to the bike.

For some reason, there is a line of LED's on my taillight that are burnt out. I am going to see if I can get these fixed before I post any pics of the new signal / tail light combination. Can you fixed burnt out LED's by replacing them in the circuit board or do you have to buy a whole brand new light?

The fuel line and temporary (another on order) fuel filter is hooked up and ready to install on my new carb. The tank is full of fuel. It won't be too long before I will be turning the key and checking the timing.

OK. I was informed that the Voes hook up had to be installed AFTER the carburetor to work properly. That's what these forums are all about and I thank those who informed me of my misplacement of the vacuum port.

SO, I drilled and tapped the intake after the carburetor flange. I threaded the end of a piece of brake line and put a backing nut on it to confirm a snug fit and lockability. I also used some copper permatex to confirm an air tight seal of the fitting.

I then installed a support bracket for my air breather since I had a hole already in the backing plate. I had quite a few members urge me to do this as carbs / air cleaners are prone to "shake off" these Ironheads while rolling down the road. I highlighted it as it's shiny finish is hard to spot in the picture. The support bracket came with the air cleaner housing but had to be "modified" (bent / twisted) for a proper fit.
