I have a FAL made by DSArms. It is topped off with a Leupold scope and is fun to shoot. It is easy to find a good buy on 308 ammo. Someday, I want to find an area where I can shoot some long rang shots to see how it handles itself.

FALs are excellent rifles. So where can you find good deals on .308 ammo?!?

I would love to add an issue M14 to my collection. Qualified with it in the Army and loved the accuracy at long range. It's weight is an advantage as long as you aren't carrying all day long. The match versions are excellent at 600 yds plus. The 7.62 round is readily available anywhere in the world.

M1A1/M-14 are very nice weapons also. IMHO the only advantage they have over an FAL though is their better sights. If I had a lot of money I would definitely like to own one. I just prefer the ergonomics, such as the pistol grip & balance of the FAL as well as cheap mags compared to the M1A1.

I used to get a publication called Shotgun News. If you get a chance to get one of these magazines you can find good buys on bulk ammo around the country. You can also go to gun shows but watch out for the rip off artist. I have seen people taken advantage of before.

Hate to break it to ya SPRINGER, but if you haven't been on the up-and-up with ammo prices, including surplus 7.62, you're in for a shock. Battlepacks of Port or South African can go for $100 or more. It was just a few months ago you could get them for $20-$30.
Don't have any "modern" military firearms. I have a couple .30-40 Krags and an 03-A3 Springfield. The 03-A3 was given to my Dad as a barreled action. He bought a Fajen sporter stock and I finished putting the thing together. Still has the military trigger, sights, and the bolt hasn't been modified for a scope. Some day (which will probably never come) I plan on getting an original type stock and taking it back to form. Both Krags were gifts to me from Dad. One Krag is an 1896 with a shortened barrel and Williams sights. It was a Christmas present when I was 14, and my first deer rifle. The other Krag is an 1898 and is still in full battle dress. It was another gift from Dad; he saw it at a show and got it for me so I'd have a "before & after" set. I even have a bayonet for it, though it is something that's been in the family for about 80 years. The Krag bolt action is the smoothes operating action ever made, IMNSHO. It will "outsmooth" any bolt job I've ever seen, including customs that cost as much as a car.

No I haven't been on the up and up on ammo prices. When I buy ammo it is usually in bulk form of at least 1000 rounds or more. I don't shoot like I used to so I haven't had to buy any for some time. Everything else goes up, I suppose that ammo is taking its turn also. That is why it is nice to reload, it helps to offset the price of buying new all the time.

Its not only 7.62X54, but all surplus ammo has simply gone through the roof price wise. The last case of SA I bought cost $189. Now, if you can find it, its above $400. Same for 7.62 russian.
I have several FALs. One is a Frankenfal in inch pattern. I have a metric Imbel I built on an Imbel "gear logo" receiver using one of Dan's grade 1 kits w/matching numbers. Its like a new rifle.
I also have a STG58 kit from DSA I bought in '03. By the looks of it, it also is like new with all matching numbers. I recently "bit the bullet" and bought a DSA Type 1 metric receiver for it. One of these days I'll build it up.
