I've got a 2 parter about using Synthetic fluids.
My bike is a 05 1200R Sportster with 1080 miles on it.
1 - I'd like to make the switch to maybe Amsoil Synthetics
in Both the Motor And Tranny But a friend of mine says it
doesnt have enough mileage on it yet. Says everything is
not fully seated and switching now would hurt it because
Synthetics are so much better at preventing wear.
Whats Everybodys Opnion on this?
2 - Amsoil's Offical Recommendation is to use their
Synthetic oil in the Gearbox too But somebody up here
awhile ago was saying to use there Gear oil. Now everything
else aside isnt it better to have Gear oil in a tranny/gearbox
then synthetic motor oil.
Welcome back. Do a search on this, we have beaten this subject half to death. There is a lot of good information in the threads. TNW, synthetic isn't going to hurt it a bit.
1) Switch whenever you want. The rings, etc. will seat in just fine. They would've seated just fine if you'd told the shop to drain the oil and fill it with synthetic from the git-go.
2) many folks are using the motor oil in the gearboxes. The stuff has been tweaked to improve the shear qualities in order for it to work in trannies. Having said that I use synthetic gear oil in mine. Why? 'Cause I'm an old fart. And there is some anecdotal evidence of tranny problems with using the motor oil in the tranny. And I stress it is only anecdotal, so it may mean little or nothing.
Remember, 75w-90 gear oil is basically the same "weight" (viscosity) as 20w-50 motor oil.
LordVngr since you have a sporty I think it call's for 20w-50 for the tranny, I think, maybe Stones can help you out on that one, but everyone else is right, syn is the only way to go, and the sooner the better I alway's say.

You can't go wrong with 100% synthetic, it is simply the best oil there is in MHO! I think I would use the synthetic gear oil in the tranny vs 20-50w you can't go wrong. Amsoil is what I use, in all three holes in my RK. I like to put about three thousand miles, and then make the switch.

I just bought a case of AMSOIL for $58.20 through the internet. I also bought two of the AMSOIL Chrome filters, about $10 each. This is the cheapest I have found. The number is 1-800-579-0580. AMSOIL is bringing out their new products in April or May and this man is clearing his inventory. I just ordered Tuesday night and I received it Friday by UPS. You can tell him you got the number from Steve in KY, or not, it doesn't matter. I'm not making anything on it. I'm just passing on the deal. Normally about $72 and up per case. Just tell him what year and motor you have.
Synthetic is the way to go. I run Alisyn (aerospace lubricants.com) in all 3 holes and have for several thousand miles. My bud runs it in his Buell engine and trans with excellent results. I think it's better than Amsoil.

1000K, just changed all three holes with full synthetic of a famous brand. during breakin oil temp ran 204-209 consistanly at temps 60-70 degress outside airtemp. put 20-50 in the engine, 20-50 in the primary and 75-140 severe gear in the trans. tried it out today in 55 degree outside temps and temp stayed at 174 degrees. It was cooler outside temp but I think the syn oil is keeping it cooler.
