Default WTK: Oil Chaning Tips ~ Softail

Looking for advice on changing the oil.

I'm installing a oil cooler tomorrow and will drain & replace the oil. Ready with the new filter and Amsoil.

How long should I leave it running (i.e. warm up) before draining the oil?

What about scavenging all (or most) of the old oil? As I am going synth, I want to make sure I get as much as I can out of the beast.

Thanks in advance.

You should warm it to operating temperature, that is ride about twenty miles or so if possible. Same for a hot level check.

Let it idle for about two minutes to clear the sump.

Nice bike! Don't worry about the scavenging. Mixing the old oil with the Amsoil won't hurt anything.

I think he meant scavaging to get the correct oil check level. Even on Dynas and Baggers, I've always thought you should run it a minute or two at idle before checking the oil level, hot. Manuals say that too , I think. I could be mistaken, wouldn't be the first time.

I agree mixing won't hurt but still think getting all the old stuff and its contaminants out is the best method, all things equal.
