Has anybody heard of this bike?  My uncle in law has one of these that he bought brand new in 1983 and put very few miles on.  I was just looking for some info on it since I will probably be buying it from him.

http://www.wreckedharleybikes.com/848.htm

His is a brown color.

Do you actually mean FXWG for the model? As far as I am concerned it it was the most beautiful FX 4 speed frame Bike that Harley made. The FXWG stood for Wideglide and was made from 1980 til 1986. it was also brought back in the 90's on the Dyna platform and the model is now called the FXDWG. But I think that Harley is discontinuing the FXDWG after this year.

It was actaully a FXDG or "Disc Glide" named after the solid disc rear wheel.  They also produced the FXWG at the same time.  A very sweet looking machine in my opinion.

Yuo are correct, I forgot about the Discglide. probably because you do not hear about them that often. I do not know what years or how many Harley made. Somebody out there does. Post pics when you can.

Never mind about the pictures I see you have a link. IMO the price is way high though. But with the rare models its all about who wants it and how much they are willing to pay. Good looking Bike. I guess it boils down to why a person wants to but it. For investment or for riding and enjoying.

Disc Glide - one of the most beautiful stock Harleys ever, IMHO. If your uncle offers it up to you and it turns your crank, by all means grab it! They are quite rare and extremely cool. Is your uncle's all stock, or did he modify it? Either way I be snapping it up...

If the price is right you can't go wrong. Even if the value does not increase.

The 80 to 84 FX line is a great ride IMHO.

Hey, post pics when you can... Check out my photo album for my 78 Shovel. Also I find it very interesting that HD produced the Discglide in 83. The very next year the Softtail custom was released with a solid rear wheel. Almost like the Discglide was made just to guage interest before releasing the FXSTC. Who knows why HD does what they do. Like all the hype about the Rocker long before it was available and the releasing the Crossbones with next to no publicity at all. weird....

The FXDG 4 speed was in 83 only, but a FXRDG 5 speed in 84 only....

Great looking bike...

I own one of these and have been using those very pictuers along with others I've found as references for bring ing the bike back to original.  Buy it!  It throws the Evo and Twin-cam guys for a loop when they see a twin-belt shovel.  You have to keep on eye on the clutch and primary belt adjustment.  The clutch system is super heavy on these and because of the belt, all that weight is way out on the main-shaft.  I am installing a BDL 1 1/2 belt drive to try and help with that issue.

I love mine.  They are really beautiful.  It should compliment your other bikes well.

Is there anyway I could convince you to take pictures of the fender badges?  They were gone when I got my bike and I would really like to know what they look like.

Thanks

It was only produced in 1983 and is a Special Edition Twin-belt Wide Glide.  From my research, I have found production numbers ranging from 720 to 751 made.  I have a copy of the Harley Enthusiast from Winter 1983.  According to the article about the FXDG in that mag, it was designed by Willie G himself.  He started with a Wide Glide and added the Sturgis belt drive, the disc rear wheel (originally made by Centerline according to some accounts), and custom leather pouches on the handle bars and sisy bar.  He blacked it out like the Sturgis.  He rode the bike to Daytona 3 years in a row to guage interest and kept it in his office to work on it.  It was released in 1983 as a 80th Anniversary factory custom.

I've had my FXDG for 9 years now, and am putting the motor and trans into a rigid frame to build a custom. I like the bike, just want to do my own thing. I have all the original parts for it, in case I ever want to put it back together. Good luck trying to talk to Harley about it, my local dealers argued with me saying there was no such thing as a FXDG! It's a cool bike though.

Sad but true.  I had to educate the parts guys at my local shop.  The first conversation with a new parts guy usually goes something like this:

Me:  "It's a 1983 FXDG, Disc Glide."

New Guy:  "FXDG . . . Dyna Glide right?"

Me: " No, this bike was made before the dyna came out.  The DG stands for Disc Glide.  It was a Limited Edition bike, but it was basically a twin-belt Wide Glide."

New Guy: "Oh, the computer says FXDG stands for FX Dyna Glide."

Me:  "Man, look, where's Joey?"

Rare is right and some parts are not sold by harley!   So for me and the other people who own this rare bike how do you come across parts?  I need a shifter assembly which has one screw and the fxwg has 2.  I could be riding instead of writing!

82sturgisFX, from your flickr page, open the picture you want to post, scroll down and find "grab this URL", copy it, then paste it in your post between
hopefully this works:

hi, new here to the forum, but a long time rider.  I was very lucky to have owned a

WILLIE "G" aka Disc Glide aka Special Edition Twin Belt Wide Glide..

As per my vin # .. my bike was built March 16 1983 and approx 723 were produced. Harley has a historical
department and they will write you the same letter based on your vin # too....

I sold it on Ebay... I won any show i entered, although it was not 100 % but at least 98 % .. but history it is !!!

look at the color scheme, black trim everywhere... think harleys dark side....

As the story goes, Willie G. was tinkering with his own custom bike in 1979, he took an fx and added a wide glide
front end.. black trim and a drap color, like a brandy wine color without the shine... rode it thru the streets of strugis
and it was an instant hit... (i have an autographed picture of Willie riding thru the streets of sturgis) after taking the company back a few years later.  Harley built the Sturgis, Flame bike wide Glide,
and this .. Special Edition Wide Glide, as stated on the air cleaner cover and belt gaurd....

I can tell you that is is a rare bike, less than a few exist in origional condition.  Today i believe with the new harley dark
color scheme's it would be more desireable...

Bike was an absolute pleasure, and dyno tested as powerful as an evo, they were suposedly hand assembled separate
and apart from the other bikes, due to the inner primary belt drive... Fantastic sifting bike, smoother than any other ever !!!
No bang, noise or oil to leak from the primary as it did years ago !!!

Sad i sold it, wife wanted it gone, now she is gone and theres a few bikes in the stable... lol...

I just purchased an 83 FXDG.  My uncle purchased it new in 1983.  It has been out of the family since 1990 so I am pretty excited.  It is the first bike I have ever owned.  I am beginning to try to accumulate original parts to do a complete restore.  It is in great shape and runs great but I rally want it back to original.  You are correct when you say that dealers have no idea what a FXDG is.  I swear if I tell the parts man FXDG and I see him write down FXWDG one more time I will lose my mind.   I think it is a beautiful bike.  If anybody can help me with parts or information I would greatly appreciate it.  I will post some pictures ASAP.

Congrats BensWillieG, the DG is hands down one of the best looking Harleys ever. If you have pics you know we'd love to see it.

Blk Night train, pity you kept the wife longer than the bike, it was a beaut.

I'm not too surprised, lots of the guys at the dealers were not even born yet or very young when these were new and they are a rare bike.
These days a lot of dealers won't even work on ealy Evos,Shovels are antiques to them.
I knew a guy with one years ago, just like the Sturgis model they had a lot of trouble with the belt drive primary but these days there are better parts to upgrade them with.
Cool bike in a lot of ways.

+1.  Same here.  I you are not buying or spending money on a Twin Cam the dealers have little vested interest in helping us.  However, there is one dealer that has a orginal Knuckle, Pan and Shovel all on display upstairs overlooking the showroom.  It is REALLY sweet and I like how they have the old iron looking down on the Twin cam inventory.  Looking at the Knuckle almost makes you feel like you just steped off a time machine.  All three bikes have large pans under them and they all have a large puddle of oil in them....
