It really depends on what you want. The classic Sailor Jerry or ancient like a tribal. I've got a masonic tatt. Check out http://www.tattoofinder.com/. Get something that has some meaning otherwise your'e just in the chair for a bit of pain and a pic you'll regret later.

My newest large piece.
Nice... I currently have 6 (but one is covered, so 5) I have the wife's name on my wedding ring finger, both my daughter's names on my left shoulderblade, my take on "man's ruin" on my right shoulderbalde, and my latest is a large dragon on my right bicep (for my youngest who was born in the year of the dragon).
My only advice to you, is to make sure you get something that you can live with, forever... Get a great artist to do it... check their work, and don't skimp on cost... it will be with you a long time, so cost should not even be a thought... I perfer to stay away from flash, and perfer to have a custom piece done... nothing sucks more than seeing the same tattoo you have, on someone else...

Think long and hard about this.  Like it was, said it is going to be with you forever.  Find/design something the jumps at you, something you just can't live without.  I have 4, and I don't regret any of them.  Found each one, waited for a couple of weeks, and then went back to see if I still wanted them.  3 were custom, and 1 was redesigned.

Here's my latest (right thigh).  It is a collaboration by two artists.  We are going to dress it up with an old-fashioned gas pump and some other nostalgic stuff.

I have an appointment for 6-8 hours on Thursday and, hopefully, after almost two years, two artists and something approaching 50 hours, my backpiece will be done.

My most recent is Carpe Diem from 2 weeks ago shown with a few others in my album. When finances allow it I want to start a right arm sleeve. Not sure what yet but want to go with black, maybe some flames since I'm taking up welding.

Here are mine. First one I got in Feb is for my daughter. It is her name in Elvish, Arwen Renee-Aurora, and the Evanstar pendant from Lord of the Rings (which is where her name came from). Second I got in March is for m son. It is his name in Elvish, Garrett John-Blake, and the Lothlorien leaf broach from Lord of the Rings. Third I just got on Wednesday and is Yoshi from Super Mario Bros.

Also, just like others said. Find a great artist and don't skimp on price. Good Luck -Christine

Trilogy, yes the Elvish is from Lord of the Rings. It is the lanuage that JRR Tolkein created for it. My husband and I got the kids names that way so that only we knew what they were, but we are more than willing to tell someone if they ask. (Hubby didn't want the names in english on his arm because he is a prison guard and he didn't want the inmates knowing what their names were)
