Someone please help me.  I truly don't understand why anyone would need or want 7 speeds on a  high torque, low revving cycle.  In fact, it seems stretching the point to have 6 speeds, with a lot of you saying you don't use sixth gear very much.

My other activity is bicycles, and I've watched the same phenomenon there.  Over the last 20 years the traditional 10 speed (2 front chain rings times 5 cogs on the rear) has mutated in stages to a 20 speed (10 cogs on the rear).  All I can figure is it is all about marketing, rather than usefulness--sell people something that sets them apart.

When seven speed tranny becomes common, watch for Baker to come out with an 8 speed!

i agree, first it was five speeds for four speed bikes, then it was six speed bikes for five speed bikes, and now that they all come with six speeds,  a seven speed will be the next big deal,   riders with too much money will have to have the next big thing.  it was funny that they coulldnt give me the final drive ratio with the new lower first, they had just finished the proto type weds to get it to the show in time to get it set up in the display................

Wonder what the final ratio and first gear ratio will be.  I agree, that 7 is streching the fact , but still am wondering??

final is still the same as the six speed, 2.79 to 1, its first thats lower and a more even ratio spread gear to gear, and i'm sure being a baker unit, only the rich will have one..................

Great.  Now I just need a motor that will do 170mph+ to accomodate a 7 speed gearbox.

With first gear being lower, that would be a real boon for the big cruisers.  Imagine this: Roadglide fully packed for that 3 week trip, wife on the back, trailer connected.  Need to get a quick start into traffic.  Uphill.  In Estes Park.  That granny gear will save you.

Or, parade duty.  Or, you just like a quick take off that only a lower gear can provide.

Although it's a limited market, I bet these sell like hot cakes.

I surely don't need a lower first gear... and to make a 6 or
7 speed (or 8,9, or 10) and not have the top gear an overdrive seems to me a waste of engineering and money....the only reason I would want a sixth gear would be to have a true overdrive....that's why I bought an HD screaming eagle six speed..... a great .885 overdrive...

Should have took the gearing of the latest HD 6 speed and then throw a 7th gear Overdrive on it.

Remember a few things about OD gears.  They are often not as strong as UD or straight gears, like 1:1.  They are not as efficient, and take more power to run.  OD divides torque - UD multiplies it.

OD would be a waste on the current 6 speeds.  6th is so high now that it's almost unusable for a lot of people.  I only use at 70+ on the freeway.  And I don't do that very often.  A lower first would sure be nice.  Many people use a secondary gear down kit on a Dyna so you get that lower gear, but then you have to sacrifice the upper gears.

There's two methods of performance gearing.  1.  Use a very low first gear, a 1:1 top, and then gear the differential numerically low, like 2.75-3.00.   The low first gear will still have an effective FDR.  But the 1:1 top gear still preserves the engines torque.   A lot of european cars are built this way.  Some US performance transmissions are built this way, like the old fashioned Richmond 5 speeds.

2.  Use an OD gear.  This is popular in the US.  1st gear is moderate, like 3.24 or 2.95, coupled to a numerically high differential - like 3.55 or 3.92.  Then use a OD 5th and/or 6th to get the rpm's down at cruise.  I don't know why this is popular with US builders.

Hey BigJohn1%,

Do you mean that by bolt in 7 speed, Baker has made it so you can keep your 6 speed trans housing and just slide in the 7 speed gear box ?

It would only make sense to a few people if you were able to used a smaller rear or bigger front final drive pully to bring first gear back upto a stock 6 speed which would give a really tall gear for those who would like to long haul at 80 mph on motorways, gain mpg and lower revs. I cannot see the need for a lower 1st gear as stock 1st is a pretty short gear anyway. It would give a 7th gear that would only get used rarely, but it would make sense to some.

Pulling up stumps on the back-40 maybe .......... other than that(?) .. most people would be using 2nd as a 1st gear.

And I just shelled out the bucks for a 6 speed............

At least the 6 speed has .86 ratio in 6th gear, good for bagger cruising, down the freeways, two up, trailer, etc........

I think these 6 speeds with 1 to 1 in sixth, don't make sense to me..............and, neither will 7 speeds.........

Its called the F6R, an upgrade for their 6 speed. The gears are all the same but while your in first you can push a safety button and drop it down another gear (reverse). It has a 4.98:1 ratio. The kit comes with a new side cover, trap door, shift fork and reverse gear pair, drum, mainshaft, and safety solenoid. Im not to sure on the price yet though.

I think you got two products mixed together I have a friend that works over there F6R is a reverse add on for the HD cruise drive transmission and then the new product is the seven speed gear set also for the new transmission

isn't a 7 speed a little superfluous?
