Yes, I'm sorry to mention this, but it is a must to me. I have heard of many CVO 110 engine having oil leaks between the head and cylinder or cylinder and crankcase. The problem is I live in the land of nowhere and basically my dealer can sell me a T shirt or a pair of gloves, but if I happen to have this big problem I would be doomed. My questionsare simple; are there many 2008 CVO's with this problem? Does anyone know why it happens? and finally have Harley done something to sort out the problem?
I live in a remotesmall town in Montana (200 miles away from the nearest Dealer), so I can appreciate your question. However, there arefour (4) 2007 CVO 110" models (2 SE Dynas & 2 SE Road Kings). None of them have the problem you relate to. 1 of the SE Dyna's had a problem with the front head bearings being out of adjustment (too loose), plus it had 2 of the 5 engine mount bolts not completely tight, but the dealer promptly corrected these issues. In summary, there have been a few reported problems with the 110 CVO's, but I believe those problems happen no more frequently thanwith the stock 96" bikes. If you want one, buy it and ENJOY!!!
I've heard (and read) the same things about the rear cylinder leaks on the 110. After some research, I have decided to go ahead and take the plunge ... I'm picking up the new scoot tomorrow! Most of the information I've read suspects heat to the the issue, and many say that the SERT will help keep the engine cooler. Others have used an engine fan -- like the one from LaNale Engineering -- to help too. The rumor is that most of the leaks happen between 4,000 and 7,000 miles so I will be watching closely!

Thanks BonsayBob, your info is much appreciated.
My guess is that bigger, more cumbersome bikes will be more prone to having heat issues due to fairings, side protectionsand so on, but you can never be sure. I don't dislike the fan option wherethe actual horn goes, but I will never accept such a poor solution for a 110 inch engine from HD. Oil coolers are much of the same since they only work as wind passes through them. Here is where I think Harleyhave not put all the engineeringneeded to solve this problem. Add to that the emmissions limit in Europe and you end up with an engine more prone to blow-up than work in a normal manner, It pisses me off that us the final users have to think of a way to solve this very real problem out, when it should be H-D who takes care of it from the beginning.
I have an 08 fxdse2...made changes to avoid heat related problems and mostly to improve performance...I went all-out and replaced heads, cams, exhaust, air cleaner and put on power commander...I also monitor head temperatures with an infrared thermometer...if it starts getting above 320* F, I'll add an oil cooler...so far it's been below 300, but it's winter, we'll see how hot it gets in the summer
If I wanted to heat-proof a cvo 110" on the cheap, I'd change to se204 or andrews 26 cam, add free-flowing exhaust and air cleaner, add race tuner or power commander and have it tuned, and if it is a touring model, add an oil cooler...also monitor head temps...this should avoid oil leaks, blown head gaskets, cylinder liner movement, etc
Luckyyou Skyhook that you can do all those changes to your bike; bet it goes like a rocket. In my case, the warranty period is sacred because if I do any mods to my bike my warranty is void. Knowing that there is an oil leak issue I would be in deep $hit if I myself do any mods. Another thing that you might not know is that here in Europe, my CVO, the FXSTSSE2 2008 costs US$46,000!!!! Crazy ain't it?
On my Dyna I already have STG 1, Rineharts and a ThunderMax with Autotuneand works like a charm. I did it because I knew the engine would appreciate it and in exchange I got some additional ponnies, and knowing the engine had no issues they could pin on me,but I dare not touch my CVO if not done at the dealer (under my supervision of course), since as I have mentioned beforethey haven't a clue about mechanics, just young kids that don't know thedifference between a bolt and a screw.
Some other time you might care to tell me what you did to your engine in detail and what you got on the dyno.
I see your dilemma...the warranty can be very compelling to leave things stock...rode mine 100 miles stock and my wife's built 96" would out run it...that was more than my sensitive male ego could take...really I think the biggest problem with the 110" is the cams...they make the compression way too high and cause the motor to run hot...here's what I did to mine:
replaced the heads with ported ones off a 96" motor
.030" head gasket
se257 cams
se air cleaner
supertrapp 2 into 1
power commander, custom mapped
not sure how much power I gained, but it's WAY faster than the wife's bike!
Thanks Drogers,
That was what I heard and if they haven't done anything, we are riding a time bomb. However I guess there are loads of aftermarket parts including lines and blocks that have managed to make this work; A 124 CI engine is surely bigger than our 110 CI....
Pity for us and SHAME ON HARLEY![:@][:@][:@]
Don't really know what to do now; I could still keep my faithful Dyna FXDC.
Spanish Flyer
I'm gonna run mine and not worry about it.That's what the extended warranty is for.If I do have a problem down the road, hopefully they will have it figured out.
