Does anyone have any experience of this S&S Touring Special engine? Sounds perfect to me, tuned specially for baggers, even comes with 3 years warranty. I have given up thoughts of further modifying my 1990 factory Evo engine and am psyching myself up to buy a ready-built one. I need some help to make up my mind!

I found some info on the engine. Took me a while. They must have just put it up. The write upin Hot Bikesounds good, but they normally do. The price is way out of my range at a base $6200 for a natural finish. The bore and stroke is the same as my 107". with a .585 cam and flat top piston, not to much compression at 9.5-1. I really don't know what the cam is in my engine. I know I am happy with my El Bruto 107" motor and I am sure you will be happy with the S&S, since you went ahead and pulled the trigger. Good luck !
I followed closelyyour discussion and contributionson fitting an Ultima 107 in a bagger. It is largely because of that topic and the information in it that I finally decided to buy myself a new engine. So welcome to my little corner and thanks to you both, also Goat when he calls by!
I live in the UK, so comparison of prices of different brands of engine follows a different set of rules! As a simple example many US imports for Harleys are almost twice the price they are in the US, despite there being almost two dollars to the pound at present. I often importstuff from the USA and Canada and can save a lot of money.
So when buying an engine I have two choices: buy one from a UK importer, or import one myself from the USA. As it happens the UK based S&S importer offers very attractive prices that are cheaper than I can bringan S&S motorin myself. Indeed it doesn't cost very much more than importing an Ultima, so the cost difference for me is closer than for you chaps. In addition I get UK-based S&S warranty support (3 years), as well as a very cleverly tuned motor. If I bought an Ultima I guess I would be on my own - I cannot drive down the road and knock on their door!
So that is why I bought an S&S - nothing against an Ultima, which I would probably have bought if I lived nearer you all. This is their touring special engine, tuned especially for baggers. It has a very wide torque band which you can see in that link to Hot Bike Magazine. That article also helped me make my choice. To get any information from S&S themselves you have to go into theirnew catalogue under 'Performance Engines', page 1-22:
Hi grbrown,
I look forward to the story here in your corner and some pictures as well. Good luck with the 107t and install. I read the link that paco had posted and I like the looks of that motor. In regards to the motor, I would have liked to replace my motor with an S&S and just could not afford that motor and when buying the Ultima it saved me about $2500 plus my old motor was putting out 105hp and I couldn't see buying a 80" to save money. I needed more power. lol
Anyway, Good luck Graham and I can't wait to hear from you on your install.
S&S engines are good quality, but I don't see how that is considered a touring engine. They don't make a low end cam; the 585 certainly isn't one. Sure, the bigger engine and higher compression make up for some of the cam's lack of low end torque, but why not have ALL the power down low and in the midrange where you need it with a touring bike? With a cam that closes the intake at 40 degrees you're not on the cam until beyond 3000rpm. It's a waste to have that power up there when you could be using it at 2000rpm.
Andrews EV13 cam would probably work with a 9.5 compression ratio. THEN you'd have a touring bike engine.
The earlier the intake closes, the earlier in the rpm range you make power. That's true no matter what the engine size or compression ratio.

I am going to cheat and have the engine installed by the UK importer. He also does the first 50 mile running in and oil change to check everything is OK. Its a bit like having my nose blown for me, but if I tried to do it myself it would take me weeks and not save so much cash, as I don't have the tools. I am also having S&S stainless ovalbagger mufflers fitted and the first I will see of it is when I collect it, to ride home. But I will take some shots of it then!
Here in the UK the price difference was much closer than for you, and S&S has good support available here, so I paid a little more for peace of mind and a 3 year warranty.
Hi mp,
You need to look at the power curves S&S claim for the 107 engine on the earlier links. They do it for me! I cannot argue about your comments on cams, as I don't know enough about the subject, but I respect S&S enough to trust them to produce what they are advertising. When the motor is run in I will get it set up on a dyno and we will see if they are right!

Deliveredmy bike to the S&Sspecialist at the weekend and hugged my new engine! As well as the S&S SPO mufflers I am having Samson true duals fitted. It is likely to be about 3 weeks before I can collect, so for the time being I am pacing up and down like a pregnant father....
