I am very interested in riding a stock rigid Pan. Anyone know what year would be best to look for? I was thinking of a 57, the same year I was born. I have done some research but would like feedback from the forum members. You have great knowledge of what works best. Thank you in advance!

My .02....Any year pan is a good thing. 48 was first year model but still used the springer front end. 54 was the anniversary model. 57 was last year for the rigid frame; 58 the first year rear shocks, 65 last year for pan and first electric start. From first year to last year, MoCo made some changes, some bigger than others.

Just a thought. Before you go to far pick up Greg Fields book on panheads. It has a lot of good photos and lists production numbers and changes through the pan years. And, when you get serious, pick up Palmers Guide on How to Restore Your HD. It is one of the best out there for identifying correct years models and parts associated to the year model.

!957 might be a bit hard to find. Straight downtube (no "wishbone") frame. One year only, next year was the first swingarm.

Good luck.

Thanks Pans4ever and Iplugw. My wife and I just returned from the Oncologists office. Things are very good! I am looking forward to locating, riding a part of American history. Having a passion for Harleys has always made treatments less dreadful. I will read all I can and enjoy the quest for the Pan in my future.   Stephen

Just a note, the springer was used on the '48 61in models(clearing out the stock inventory) and the 74in had the first glide front ends.

My idea of the "best" panhead to get would be 1948 to 1965.
In other words, ANY panhead is "good"  Happy hunting !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Plus, it "sounds" like you got good news at the oncologist. Do I assume correctly?

I have a '57 pan I have rode since 1974. It has been a very reliable bike. the only time it broke down was when I broke a drive chain.

Great to hear yours has treated you so well. 57 is the year I was born. I hope to own one in the future. I have read about the many changes, improvements over the years. Is your 57 in the original frame? How does it look? Thanks for the comments and have a great Easter.

Don't know where you got your info...but ALL 48 Pans, 61 or 74 had springers.

Actually Straight leg frames started in late 54, 55, 56 and 57 all had straight leg frames. Springers were  also available in 49 for sidecar use although I heard you could order them in 49 without a sidecar. I personally like the 48 or 49 springer with tombstone taillight. 57 was also a beautiful machine and if it was your birth year that would ad some significance. If you did not have to have a rigid the 65 has a push button. SWEEEET !

I know your post says a rigid but, consider a Duo Glide for the sweetist ride you will ever have.   The hard tails are not for bad roads and will literally buck you off the seat.  You will also find out if you have kidney problems.  As far as looks go I like the rigid but, the Duo in my opinion is the classic Harley....Yes I have had both.  Good luck on your quest.

I can definitely see the benefit of the Duo Glide. Smokindave, your ride is very convincing. I must say the pic of your bike says a thousand words!

My humble opinion... Get a 1964. last year they made 'em kickstart. although, owning one myself, i may be guilty of being a purist.

I've had 3 pans over the years...I love 'em!! You may find a decent one in Walnecks classic cycle trader....available at most news stands.
All my pans were rigid framed bikes,my last was a bobber with 15" gimps which I made myself.....................Best of luck to you!!
