I have used HD filters in the past and were satisfied with them. The price is competitive too as well. I still use them from time to time...but I avoid the chrome ones though. If I am at the dealer, I might buy one or two. I have used WIX for the past five years with no trouble at all. These are a little less and readily available since the nearest HD dealership is about an hour away. I just get the black ones and not the chrome ones...since they get tossed after the service interval anyways. Besides, the black ones do not look nearly as dirty as the chrome ones do after a ride in the rain or a dirt road. I don't believe that it is all that critical who makes the filter, but it is important to get one with the same specifications. Just because it screws on and fits....does NOT mean it should be used on the bike.

Harley filter mostly due to availability and the fact that I didn't get a clear reading of an acceptable filter substitute from reasearching this site and other links obtained from this site. I would have tried a K&N, but I didn't want to order. After researching this forum and many other oil testing websites that I got links to from this forum, I put Mobil 1 V-Twin in my bike Monday at 4200 miles. The reason is more for availability over AMSOIL and Redline than any other. I found that these three oils were superior in tests to other oils. I would have put Redline 20W60 in the engine along with the Redline Shockproof that I put in my transmission if I had ordered the transmission lube but the Shockproof was given to me and I didn't have to order it. I put Penzoil 10W40 in the primary because I think that's all it needs. This is based on researching this forum for information about primary fluids and asking a question about heat of the primary affecting the oil. I am certain that the synthetic oil in the engine will protect my engine vetter than dinosaur oil in the Louisiana summer heat that is on its way. I am certain that the Redline Heavy Shockproof gear lube will perform the best in my transmission over dinosaur oil. I would have no problem putting Mobil 1 gear lube in the transmission or the AMSOIL but, as I said, the Redline was given to me.

I like the Purolator filter. I personally don't care for chrome filters... The heat rejection properties of chrome are lousy.

I use the FRAM PH-6022 oil filter on my 2006 Dyna Street Bob. about $5 compared to the $14 HD filter. I only use FRAM or WIX filters. it's not like Harley makes the filter so you know it's probably one of those two filters anyways.

KN-171-c is the motorcycle chrome filter, and the B is black. The engineer at K&N told me the automotive HP-1002 is the same thing, but white. I would run the longer 1009 if it weren't for than crank position sensor. Any automotive store has them and you can peel the sticker and paint it black. (or spray chrome) chrome does hold the heat in. 10 micron single pass. The 10 micron is needed on the twin-cam motor because of all the intricate little oil passages. I also run Royal Purple oil. It tests even better than Amsoil.

I use the Drag Specialties magnetic oil filter on both of my Harley's, part#DS275188, but that's just my preference. Types and brands of filters are just as subjective in Harley forums as is the type of fluids we run in our bikes. What's equally important as an adequate oil filter is that the oil and filter gets changed as per your owner's manual at the recommended intervals (or earlier). I know people who only change their filters on every other oil change but I change my filter at each oil change. It's just another $12.00 and to me that's worth the added protection and peace of mind!

You will never get a FL1A to work on the Harley. It simply will never fit. I don't know where you saw it saying it will fit.....but it will not. If you really want to look at a motorcraft oil filter....look up motorcraft FL793. This one will fit and work on the bike....but why? Even if it was free....I still wouldn't use it on my bike. They are white and ugly. Motorcraft filters are manufactured by Pulurator....and HD filters are manufactured by Pulurator as well. I would really have to see the specifications first.....possibly could be the same filter? Stick with OEM HD filter or a Wix. Neither one will serve you wrong.

EVOrider....look up near the start of the thread Thudmeister put a link in post 21 or so....it says you can use an FL-1-A on a Sportster.....my bike sits in the back of the department, so I grabbed one from my counter and walked back there to look.....It's WAY to big.....I was thinking more of an FL-400-S might fit.....I don't use chrome filters anyway...I can always paint one of my Motorcraft ones black....or even blue to match my bike's paint! lol Rev. I voted for the HD filter just because I didn't want to wait a week for the K&N filter to come if I ordered it. I was in Wal-Mart today & saw that fram sells a chrome filter for motorsickles. But I didn't want to look to see of they had one for my HD.

I have no HD dealerships in the immediate area, that's why. JUST in case if I were to buy an oil filter "local" I would want one that was compatable with the HD. sambo42xa

Ok, found info I was looking for..........."30 micron is designed to work best for your Evolution style engine". "10 micron filter was developed for use with the Twin Cam style engine, which has a different system that allows oil to be forced through a more restrictive oil filter". The reason for the tighter filtration by the manufacture as necessary to assure all of the smaller passages, in the Twin Cam style engine. Anyway, I bought my Oil filter last night, shop stocked HD filters which I paid $12. (chrome) and Amsoil at $8. a qut. thnx., sambo42xa

I don't know if you guys have come across this or not, but from my research, a HD oil filter as used on, say, a 1986 big twin or a 1987 Sporty, is _exactly_ the same as the filter used on a Toyota 22R motor, such as a 1986 or 1992 4-cylinder Toyota Truck (among others). Same size, threads, pressure release spec, anti-drain valve, etc. I've been using these for 20 years and 120K miles on the two above mentioned bikes. You can look up a RN Toyota Truck in the cross ref books at wally world and get the filter for that in whatever your favorite brand is or go to a Toyota dealer and for about $5 get about the best filter you can buy, and it's black too. And, half of them are made in the US.

Here is a post from an oil filter discussion on the VTwin forum I found. After reading it you will find out why anyone with a twin cam HD engine should be using a HD five micron oil filter and NOT any other aftermarket filter. And yes, you are protected by the Magnussen Moss act, but if you use a non HD five micron oil filter and the dealer thinks the engine failure was caused by that filter, it will cost you thousands to hire an attorney to fight them. Is it worth it to save $3.00 on an oil filter. I think not! HI all. A few weeks back, there was a post asking about using Baldwin filters. Wile it would seem that the whole post is now gone, this was the catalyst that started me down this path, and what I have found has quite shaken what I thought to be true, and I feel I need to pass this on to all of you here. I will state plainly that I have no dog in the fight, I do not, nor have I ever worked for Harley Davidson, I do not even own stock in it. My hope is to have a discussion, and though I am sure I will bend a couple noises out of joint, it is not what I am trying to do, I am only passing this on to you with the hope it will save you down the road. I was always told by filter companies and in school, you use a filter that is made and designed for the engine and vehicle. As we all know, or should know about our Twin cams is that the first factory oil filter is that the first design was the standard 30 Micron type, the same ones they used for the EVO and sportster engines, but they found out quickly that this cause issues in the engine, mainly, the oil feed holes to the cam tensioners would clog up, and the oil pumps could not maintain pressure. The problems only got worse with more dirt and soot. So the company made a new filter, a 10 Micro that solved or slowed down these Issues, until the "B" and the 06 Dyna. These Engines needed the filtration taken to the 5 Micro level, and now that the all the 07's used this, they have replaced the 10 with the new super 5 filter. The Issue with the new tensioner design is this, the oil feed holes to the tensioners get restricted and clogged if you do not use a 5 Micron filter, is this is the reason why the company went to the new Super 5 filter. With this all said, if you use the factory filter, you should be just fine, the problem is this, the aftermarket filters have not ben following Harley on this. When the guy with the Baldwin question challenged my answer, I made a call to Baldwin on the tech line, what i learned in the call got me calling other filter manufactures, and well, I was dismayed. You have to understand form a manufactures point of view, Harley's are a very small market, compared to say a Toyota or a Chevy or Dodge, but it cost the same amount of capital to gear up to make a filter and test and so on, so most filters you see listed in the Aftermarket, are in fact, filters made for cars that they feel will work. They based there estimate on the first design 30 micron filter, and found filters that had a similar flow and filtration characteristics, you know, close to, but not the same. The way they measure filtration is by what is the largest size the media will capture, the smaller the number, the smalled the particle. anything smaller then the number will pass through the filter. Here are some that I have checked on.... Baldwin B1413 18 Micron Wix 51215 24 Micron Wi

Fram filters. Top of filtering media is held together with glued cardboard. The check vale can can stuck with cardboard Take one apart. No good! Wix filters have a very good rating. As do Hasting in you can find them. Ran the fram on VW diesel Rabbit, 1978 blew apart 3 filters. Have not bought a fram since.
