I got no problem with the HD filter; The harley shop is a pretty good drive from me and I have an Oreilley auto parts right here in my small farming community.... he orders me my K&N filter and sells it cheap.

I recently bought a Fram filter at a parts store that was made for the Harley. Chrome and all. I don't necessarilly like Fram filters but I thought maybe the Harley filters were made by Fram anyway. I may go to a non-chrome filter other than Fram if I can find a black or chrome one.

The new Harley filters are made by Champion, and are quite good - as good as the Mobil-1. The Pure One is just a hair better.

K&N auto filters are made by Champion and are pretty good. K&N motorcycle filters are made by Hi-Flo, a chinese outfit, and are complete trash - you should never use them. Especially if you store your Harley in the winter, Hi-Flo filters have been known to collapse and cut off all oil flow.

Fram filters are also complete crap, and should never be used.

I am new to late model Harleys.  The Filter HD just sold me for the RK is a 5 micron filter, the standard one is 10 micron I think. I believe the manual says something about that too.  5 microns is pretty darn small if you ask me.  That said, I figured with the Twincam's early cam bearing problems, it was probably a good idea to go with it.  I bought the black one; bike has too much extra chrome on it now anyway.

I also see these numbers listed as a fit (TC 88)/PL10241 & PL25230.

Anyone using these?

I use HD 5 mic or Perform, which I think are the same filter.

Had my bike apart this winter and the only reason I could see for such a tight filter is the, piston cooling jets. I dont know how long harly has been using them but they are tiny to look at. I think I read somewhere that they are not even supposed to come into play much till the oil gets hot anyway. This also helps warmup time.

Cam tension pistons have small holes but not like the piston jets.

Having said that anybody can say their filter captures 5 micron if it does some. Do they use a better media? Seem all the best ones use the same synthetic media, and say can capture down to 8-10 micron. How much?

I do run Puralator Pure One on all other vihiclees I own. And lawnmower.

Awhile back American Iron ran some tests on several differant brands of filters, Harley was at or near the bottom.

Why not use the filter that was specked and built for the motor instead of something that fits and may work just because you can buy it for 3$ less?

As much as i have tried to ignore this comment, sorry but i can't. So what your saying is when i go to change my oil and filter in my Dodge truck i should go to a Dodge dealer and get the oil and filter there because it's specked for my motor? Surely you jest. If you think a Harley oil filter is the best oil filter for your bike then so be it. I'm not going to put one on my bike when i can put a far superior filter on it, and it does work, no maybe about it. I have no idea how much a HD filter costs and i never will. Next you'll be saying we should only put HD oil in our bike that is contracted out to some oil Co that submitted the lowest bid to HD. You do what you want i could care less, but i'll continue to spin them Purolator filters on and dump in the Amsoil for the BEST protection for my bike.

after reading all that re: oil filters the chart doesn't list one for my 08 FLHTC ? Help

I like the harley one because i have the end cap socket that fits over the flutes.  Makes taking it off a breeze.  The last time i used a amsoil, and had a bitch of a time getting it off.

This is just me...a 22 thousand dollar motorcycle deserves a decent filter, I read many posts from people looking to save 4 bucks and buying cheap filters, K & N is a filter company, thats all they do and have been doing it well for many years and their products are top drawer, Amsoil has designed filters as well using the highest quality materials and latest filter technology...these are my 2 choices. Do your engine a favor, spend the extra bucks.

 \\;
I''m torn on this one.
One of my road dogs bought this for his two liter vulcan\\; since it''s a new installation he has not yet rendered an opinion.
I like the concept for a host of reasons. However, I do not see:
 \\;- How F.A.A. tests relate to our machines\\;
 \\;- A pressure rating for the bypass valve\\;
 \\;- What exact "paper filter" they are 90% better than, at 10 microns (their success at 45 microns is akin to gravel in our motors)\\;
 \\;- Mention of an anti-drainback valve.
If I have not delved deeply enough, feel free to enlighten us all.
 \\;
I''m not knocking this unit at all\\; conversely, I have been on the edge of buying one myself!
I simply find the absence of these critical facts disquieting. From what I read here, these are among the only important criteria by which filters should be judged. Matters of convenience, appearance and believing a manufacturer''s hyperbole are strictly secondary.
 \\;
I sincerely, truly hope these live up to the marketing - I''ll be next in line to get one!
FWIW, the stealership performing service on my bud''s metric had reservations about the filter, but I suppose that is to be expected.
I''ll be sure to post here if his mill claps out.
