Grew up 45 miles south of Daytona. Went to the 500 from 71' to 79' and the Firecracker 400 on July 4th from 69 to 80'. Its not the same anymore. Its about as Southern as Tyson Chicken Nuggets. The drivers are given rockstar status right away. King Richards 200 wins is a milestone like Nolan Ryan's Strikeout record it won't be broken in this day and age.

Other than NHRA, nothing comes close to 200 mph. Not F1, not CART, (RIP) not IRL, and they sure aren't bumper to bumper drafting at those velocities.

Formula 1 doesn't come close to 200mph? They did 225mph at Monza...

I've been to nascar races. I've been to probably 20 F1 races. I've been to probably 50 CART/Champ Car races. I've seen a 240mph lap in CART. It SURE made the stock cars seem slooooooowwww.

nascar cars are big. They're easy to watch. They have big numbers and the cars are easily identifiable, even if they all look the same. The cars are somewhat interesting, because it's easy to see how the cars are working because they have such high roll centers and large masses.

But give me single-seater race cars anyday. I don't need any fake debris cautions. nascar is contrived racing that panders to the sponsor with the most money to bring. If you like nascar, wait until you see what they're going to do to AMA road racing now that they own it.

nascar won't be happy until they are the only game in town. As a business, they are monopolistic. If they spent as much effort tending to their own business instead of ruining everybody elses business, they'd have a better show. But they are more concerned with making money, and not letting anyone else compete with them.

Being a Yank, I just *Don't Get* this NASCAR thing.

It's more a southern sport, right?

I mean, there's nothing wrong with speed and racing. But I just kinda like the quick burst of speed on a strip.

At the risk of pissing folks off (I'd just hate to do that, ya know) what is the fascination of NASCAR? How can it be exciting to watch cars go around an oval track, for hours on end?

Sorry, guys. I just don't get it.

Oh, and BTW...

Daytona. Why do they have the *Superbowl* of races at the begining of the year? Or is it really more like Opening Day for baseball?

SRO, TIA.

Its just a sport like anything else...if you start watching it, learning about the drivers and the cars, learning the history and rivalries that exist..then you become a fan.

Ask a southerner what they think of hockey! If they even know what hockey is and if they care or not. To me hockey is boring...a bunch of guys with no teeth skating around on some weird frozen stuff I have never seen doing more fighting than anything else and every once in a while somebody might actually score. Ranks right in there with soccer. ho-hum

I'm not a NASCAR fan either...oh look a left-turn....oh look, another left-turn! OK, I like to see the crashes on the news.

I remember the first baseball game my step-father ever saw..its was the Texas Rangers when Kenny Rogers pitched his "perfect game" about 8 or 10 years ago. He just couldn't understand why everyone kept cheering when this was the most boring thing he had ever seen.

It's no different than folks being rabid supporters of college football teams, from colleges that they , the fan never even went to.

Why do folks get so wound up over college sports?   Isn't a college a learning instutution?   I would like to see a group of guys sitting in Hooters, arguing over which college had the highest perecentage of Freshman, that actually ended up graduating from the same college.

I grew up in NH and I never got into it until I was stationed down at FT Bragg, NC.  One of my buddies down there was Dale Earnhardt's cousin  Anyway, I knew nothing about the guy and so I never humped my buddy's leg to meet him.  Anyway, Tom got me into it but I was hooked once I finally went to a race.  It's a blast.

Now to show the appeal, my wife wouldn't tell people I even watched it.  I finally said, "let me take you to one race and see it for yourself."  My wife is hooked and she would be the last person you'd ever expect to get into it.

I suppose with any sport, you have to know more about the strategy and the car set ups.  Otherwise, it is watching cars go around in a circle.

Now another great event is NHRA.  That will blow you away.

I agree......

I'm a fan of the old nascar, this new improved version of WWF on wheels just doesn't cut it for me.....Competition yellows ?? Lucky dogs ?? WTF ??

When Mark Martin finally goes into a full retirement what little interest I still have will retire with him...
