Grew up 45 miles south of Daytona. Went to the 500 from 71' to 79' and the Firecracker 400 on July 4th from 69 to 80'. Its not the same anymore. Its about as Southern as Tyson Chicken Nuggets. The drivers are given rockstar status right away. King Richards 200 wins is a milestone like Nolan Ryan's Strikeout record it won't be broken in this day and age.

ORIGINAL: Comfortably Numb Other than NHRA, nothing comes close to 200 mph. Not F1, not CART, (RIP) not IRL, and they sure aren't bumper to bumper drafting at those velocities. Formula 1 doesn't come close to 200mph? They did 225mph at Monza...

I've seen a 240mph lap in CART. It SURE made the stock cars seem slooooooowwww. nascar cars are big. They're easy to watch. They have big numbers and the cars are easily identifiable, even if they all look the same. The cars are somewhat interesting, because it's easy to see how the cars are working because they have such high roll centers and large masses. But give me single-seater race cars anyday. I don't need any fake debris cautions. nascar is contrived racing that panders to the sponsor with the most money to bring. If you like nascar, wait until you see what they're going to do to AMA road racing now that they own it. nascar won't be happy until they are the only game in town. As a business, they are monopolistic. If they spent as much effort tending to their own business instead of ruining everybody elses business, they'd have a better show. But they are more concerned with making money, and not letting anyone else compete with them.

ORIGINAL: Eyeball Kid Being a Yank, I just *Don't Get* this NASCAR thing. It's more a southern sport, right? I mean, there's nothing wrong with speed and racing. But I just kinda like the quick burst of speed on a strip. At the risk of pissing folks off (I'd just hate to do that, ya know) what is the fascination of NASCAR? How can it be exciting to watch cars go around an oval track, for hours on end? Sorry, guys. I just don't get it. Oh, and BTW... Daytona. Why do they have the *Superbowl* of races at the begining of the year? Or is it really more like Opening Day for baseball? SRO, TIA. Its just a sport like anything else...if you start watching it, learning about the drivers and the cars, learning the history and rivalries that exist..then you become a fan. Ask a southerner what they think of hockey! If they even know what hockey is and if they care or not. To me hockey is boring...a bunch of guys with no teeth skating around on some weird frozen stuff I have never seen doing more fighting than anything else and every once in a while somebody might actually score. Ranks right in there with soccer. ho-hum I'm not a NASCAR fan either...oh look a left-turn....oh look, another left-turn! OK, I like to see the crashes on the news. I remember the first baseball game my step-father ever saw..its was the Texas Rangers when Kenny Rogers pitched his "perfect game" about 8 or 10 years ago. He just couldn't understand why everyone kept cheering when this was the most boring thing he had ever seen.
