Being a Yank, I just *Don't Get* this NASCAR thing.

It's more a southern sport, right?

I mean, there's nothing wrong with speed and racing. But I just kinda like the quick burst of speed on a strip.

At the risk of pissing folks off (I'd just hate to do that, ya know) what is the fascination of NASCAR? How can it be exciting to watch cars go around an oval track, for hours on end?

Sorry, guys. I just don't get it.

Oh, and BTW...

Daytona. Why do they have the *Superbowl* of races at the begining of the year? Or is it really more like Opening Day for baseball?

SRO, TIA.

Daytona is Hype, counts for no more than the next race...if it were a "superbowl" it would decide the year's BEST TEAM , like in football..any race where restrictor plates are used ruins the fun...
NASCAR was the last major pro sport to be able to support itself without TV $.
The powers that be in Nascar changed the rules a few years back to make the final 10 races like a "playoff"...how pathetic...eyeball, if ya wanna be sure to not piss anybody off, just cheer for Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Johnson like everybody else...

Now that is a quality reply.

Yes, one that qualifies the sport.

I have been a Nascar fan for a long time.  It can be an exciting sport.  The last few years I have still been keeping up with it, but losing interest fast.  Parity is gone. The ratings of the "pretty boy" drivers decides who gets what.  Yeah, I am starting to believe it is rigged.  If not rigged then partiality is sure apparent.  And what is up with the Toyotas.  Come on!.   America is selling itself out.  Now they have to take the National out of it and call it IASCAR.  Yeah I know they are not "stock cars".

I just want any one to win that is not in a Toyota or not driving for Rick Hendrick.  I rooted for Junior when he was with DEI, but never while he is with the Hendrick bunch.

I take it you've never been to a race, right?

I could never get into it either until I went to a race a few years ago. Now I go to at least one a year with the 'boys'. We pick a location and tie the race in with a NCAA football game and an NHL game. Last year was Ft. Worth TX, the year before was Atlanta GA, and the year prior to that was Talledega, AL. This upcoming November will have us in Phoenix AZ.
TV does NOT do it any justice. It is ear-damaging loud, and those good ol' boys are going real fast. It's waaay faster and louder than TV can show you. Just go to one.

'Cause Daytona is THE NASCAR event of the year, every year, that's why. Works for me.

Go pick yourself up a copy of Jeff McGregor's 'Sunday Money'. Good read.

Nope, never been to a race. I can't see too many of my friends being open to taking a weekend in the summer to travel to a race, either.

You have to go to a race to get the real deal.
Chances are there is a track that aint too far away from you to make it a one day trip. You wont really get a good answer by posting on a forum due to fans of the 'Stick and ball 'sports.
I like the Giants Raiders and the Jets.
But during the winter it gets old watching overpaid social misfits all season untill racing starts again. That is why Daytona is considered the Superbowl of NASCAR.After a long season of Football,we need something different.
To you stick and ball fans who cut down NASCAR because you dont "get it".....would you like it better if the teams wore tight pants and patted each other on the asses after every lap?Maybe NASCAR needs more "Roid ragers or cokeheads.Hell I doubt that one of those big Roid-headed ball players could get that cranium through the window.

When you don't understand something, it is hard to be interested in it.  I have lived on the northern edge of the everglades all my life and I don't understand hockey, and have no interest in it.  The only thing I know is they try to put the puck in the goal.

Nascar is a very complex sport and more of a team sport than one would think.  Recent years the driver has become less important, yet he is the one that gets the glory. It takes all the pieces of the puzzle to be a winner. Car, Engineering, engine, crew, timely decisions and even luck.  They are all so close.  Someone said non-athletic event.  These guys in the middle of summer in a 140 degree car with the windows up and a fire suit on for 3 hrs.  Sounds to me like they have to be in top physical condition.

It is more interesting when you know where the owners, drivers, and crew cheifs come from.   I do miss the ole one car teams having a chance to win the race.  Competetion has become so close that only the muticar teams with lots of money can consistently win, but when another does it makes for an interesting day.

If a Nascar fan is a red neck, then guilty as charged.  Charlie Daniels said "What this world needs is a few more rednecks."

I was on a crew for a looooong time/last of the independents racer.I enjoyed helping out,and getting to hang with the crew.
Everytime they came out west,I got into the pits, and was just a gopher,if nothing else.Timekeeper, set gas ,and tires on the wall, throw him a water bottle, etc.
But it was fun.
Some of the drivers were genuinly good guys, but some of the real high profile guys was just dicks.

It's just way to corporate now,too much hype, and gotten to rediculous.

Go fast,turn left.

Most of them hated Sears Point, cause ya gotta turn right too!

The road course races were always interesting because a team or two would employ a seasoned road racer for those races. I always wanted Boris Said to win one of those, He put on a great show.

the Moonshiners started it and it got out of control from there
It use to be ,you had to be from the South to be a part of it,
the next thing you know, there were drivers from Texas,California, etc
Now they have a Latino in the sport, and now Japan has gotten invloved

It went downhill when they started having team mates on the track
owners with multiple cars.etc.

Then Tony Stewart let the cat out of the bag by giving away the BIG SECRET

ITS LIKE WRESTLING ...

I am a huge Nascar fan and have been for years, and the reason most people don't get it is because they don't get the strategy or the rules of the sport. Everyone should take the time to learn about something before they should comment on it. I have been to a lot of races and they are more exciting in person for sure. I did not get it till my first trip to Talladega and after that and learning what was actually happening on the track I was hooked. Keep an open mind and you may find out what you are missing. Find out about the drivers and you will find one that you relate to and then you will have someone to pull for during the race.

I liked it better in the early days when you could actually recognize the cars. You could be driving a car that was quite similar to the one that your race "idol" drove, at least in appearance. Now I think the only thing which differentiates them is the headlight decals.

Anyway I am Canadian and I GET IT, but it has changed a lot over the years.

Guys, I've already admitted to being a NASCAR-Tard!

I *get* the strategy, and some rules. I just don't understand why it is so popular, watching cars go in a circle.

I live near the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. I've driven my car, and rode my bike on the rack. (For a fee, of course.)

I go to The Cleveland 500 Grand Prix Race. (Not every year.)

That is exciting. It takes a much more skilled driver (IMHO) to drive these cars. I drove at a couple county fairs, round track and found it boring.

Maybe it's like soccer. If ya don't like it, nothing anyone says will change your mind.

Or am I really missing something?

I work in NASCAR and don't like the sport.  I don't like the fact that they drive500 miles in a circle.  I don't like the fact that the cars are antiquated technology and nothing close to a STOCK car.  I don't like that they force the use of restrictor plates even though I understand why.

Give me Mazda Speed challenge, Forumual 1, Rolex sports car series or Rally any day.  Mazda is a great series with some really competative racing.

I don't like NASCAR as much anymore for the reasons you gave. The cars aren't stock, they all look the same, and now the cars are so safe, there's less fear involved. The drivers today would get their a$$es beat by the old timers who grew the sport.
I'm with you on road course racing - cars and bikes.

I can only speak for myself. I NEVER used to watch it. If you don't give it any mind, watching it on TV is not anymore exciting than watching paint dry. TV just doesn't do it any justice. If you watched last weekend's race at Fontana, CA there's no way you'd ever get that they were doing 200 mph on the straights. IMO, you can only get that in person. TV also does not give you any idea how LOUD it is. Other than NHRA, nothing comes close to 200 mph. Not F1, not CART, (RIP) not IRL, and they sure aren't bumper to bumper drafting at those velocities. OK, a few of tracks on the MotoGP circuit allow a couple of the the fastest bikes to exceed 200 on maybe one part of the track. (I will make it to a Phillip Island MotoGP GP one of thes years for sure)
The first time I saw a NASCAR race it I was simply amazed at the whole spectacle. The 2nd time I made an effort to pay a bit of attention, and the 3rd time I remained amazed while having a pretty fair idea of all that was going on. Now I'm glued to the TV for every race (well, I'm not sure how I feel about the 'shorter' courses still) and am really looking forward to Phoenix in the 2nd weekend in November this year.
Like a few of us have stated, YA JUST GOTTA GO to one. It's kinda like comparing a live rock concert to one on your TV. I don't care how decent your home setup is, it just can't come anywhere close to the real thing.
Whenever we take a 'newcomer' along on one of our NASCAR trips, each and everyone of 'em comes away simply blown away.
If it doesn't turn your crank live, well, it never will.

I went to last year's 300 that's held on Saturday. I had a free pass to the Goodyear Tower. If it wasn't fo the free beer and food, I would have stayed home... Zzzzzzzz. I went to Atlanta a couple years back... another Zzzzzzz. I think it plays better on TV with a lot less hassle.

This is where I have to respectfuly disagree.  I don't want to see cars going 200 miles an hour in a circle.  I like seeing cars going 120 miles an hour through hair pin turns trying to make impossible passes on incredibly difficult courses.  Then you have courses like the 'Ring with amazing straightaways, hairpins and switchbacks that will give you whiplash.  Now that is entertaining!

Go to a race that is near you, that being Brooklyn, Michigan. I have been there 3 times, free tickets from Coors, and free tickets from Coke. 2 times at an indoor suite where my daughter got to meet and have her picture taken, with her favorite driver, Dale Jarrett. Did a Michigan turn-around, drive to the area, spend the night, go to the race, then drive home to N.J. right after the race. Daughter had to be at work on Monday morning. Stopped for gas and food only.
The racing is a high speed game of chess. But if you don't understand, oh well!!!!!!
