Default Rear floorboard cover idea

Floorboard covers range from about 35 to 100 bucks for some and average about 50 bucks. I am not tight, just want my bike to look good like everyone else, but I have limited funds.
I had this idea for a long time now and it was to cut out some aluminum, stainless, or some kind of chrome (like cuttng the side out of an old chrome toaster or stuff I find laying around) Remember those, lol. I like to do custom touches that my brain comes up with and I have the ability to do. Things that look good and cheap!
The idea was to cut out the same shape of the outer part of the rear floorboard and attach it like the covers attach, maybe putting a small skull emblem or something along those lines in the middle.
Yesterday on e-bay I seen almost the same thing, same idea! They asked alot for it but I think I can do the same myself. Here is a picture and a link of what I saw.

I would like to hear you folks opinion on this idea???
Try it or looks stupid?

Doesn't look stupid to me.

I say go for it. If it turns out that you don't like it, you're only out some time, elbow grease, and whatever small amount of $ on material. I'm a firm believer in doing something myself rather than paying someone else to do it for me.

I thought about a insert that fits inside the raised rib ands is attatched with either tape or adhesive silicone so there is no visible attatchment. Cut it out of stainless or aluminum and polish it. I too like doing stuff on the cheap and myself,go for it.

Looks like a neat idea to me. Go for it and post up what you come up with. Like said, can't hurt, and might take care of a little bit of winter cabin feaver.

I have been experimenting with this idea during comercials of the Daytona 500. I have a question about how the covers attach to the floorboards. It seems that the little tits of rubber are actually the board inserts coming threw the board. I see the covers screw in the same spot? How do you screw in the covers in the same spot and keep the rubber in the floorboard? Maybe someone can explain? Ohh, gotta drill new holes for the covers?

You have to drill two new holes for the self tapping sheet metal screws.

Cabin fever is killing me!
Here is where I am at as of now. I have pulled the tits up out of the floorboard and cut them off. I cant put a flat piece of metal up against them rubber tits. I then drilled a pilot hole in the floorboard rubber and inserted a counter sunk metal screw. Not as easy as it sounds.

You can see how the screw sets pretty flat.

I then made a template of the inside rib and will use it to cut me a piece of aluminum or stainless. Found both but haven't decided which one to use. Aluminum being easy to cut and polish but may be a little thick?

More to come!

Please keep us posted. I hate installing the same damn stuff everyone else has. Saw the ones you referenced on Ebay. I do like them ... but priced too high.
