The Harley market has dramatically changed expecially in the EVO market.  Guys that paid over MSRP for a '90's HD,s expect to get a resonable price based on what they paid.  In reallity they are bringing less than half.  I have a '98 Heritage that I bouoght for $9,000 on E-bay.  The auction started at $11,000 and expired without any bids.  and I called the guy up and offered him $9,000.  He needed money and thought he was giving it away.  He was pissed the whole time I was there picking the bike up, didn't offer any extras or insight about past service.  If remember following E-bay auctions closely and about 8 out of 10 auctions expired without any bids.

Bottom line, you got a depreciating asset.  If you want to turn it into cash you need to price it at what the market is willing to pay.  Most HD owners are emotionally attached to their bikes and can't come to grips with this.

Yeah, I agree. I got my 98 Heritage on ebay last summer, the best season. And I paid 10,000. For it, the guy originally ask 16,000.00. And its custom paint, and everything on it is Harley Chrome. Great deal. If you want to really sell it, you better keep it low!  What ya selling?

Cycle Trader (remember these are asking prices) and deduct 15 - 20% for avg sale

KBB & NADA is just a basic guideline for the dealer to figure out a low book as a trade... So for sale price they're worthless

Performance parts (stage 1 - stage 2 Et).. Will INCREASE value by 50 -70% of what you paid for it..
Chrome (Bling-Bling) is only worth maybe 10 - 15% of the act. cost
Custom Paint 50% of coat and reduces by 10% per year..

Been doing this for years...

I find that stuff is worthless.
You ask a price and hope someone bites.
I offered my Goldwing for $7000. Had an offer...then he found out 'blue book'
was about $6800. I mention the up graded suspsion and other modifications......
and he balked.  I advertised it for $6200...and i GET A KAZILLION HITS!
My fatboy...blue book is like....$14000.   I adv. it for $10000 and get NOTHING.
So, no matter what you think something is worth..if no one wants it,
it is worth squat.

Right bike + right buyer = sold.

My 02 dyna sold new for $20,000. I paid $10k for it last summer. Have put about $2k more into mostly performance & comfort mods and will probably be putting it up for sale locally for $12,500, depending upon how much I like the Road King after a demo ride one of these days. Forum folks would laugh at the "ridiculous" price, but this is a big time motorcycle town and all the work's been done. Economy is good here and it's RUB Ready.
Good news for me is that I don't have to sell it. If I don't get my price, I still ride. Would not want to be in the "must sell" mode, even here.
Bought my Sporty for $5,100 last spring and sold it 3 months later for $5,800 to the first guy who looked at it. It was "just what he was looking for."

I think that ebay is the best place to sell a bike and where people can get the best money for them.  If you hit "Advanced Search" on there you can look for completed listings, this should give you an idea of how much people are getting for their bikes.

www.nada.com or www.ebay.com  Ebay you will get a better idea what bikes are selling for. Always remember with NADA  condition and accessories as well as mileage and are must be taken in to account and these are to be used as a guide only.

I used to like www.cycletrader.com but now they are mostly swamped with stealer ads and they do not let you do a private party search, so I no longer bother with them, on top of that many of the ads in there are ads that will run till sold so there are a LOT of dreamers out there waiting for a chump.

Bottom line if you are selling a bike its worth as much as you can get for it and if your buying one its worth as little as you can pay for it.

I bought my '03 ultra last june. after seeing what they are selling for on ebay, and what the "books" say they're worth, I decided not to do the motor work I had planned on. It would be throwing money out the window.,,

Personally the real question you have to ask you self is what will it sell for.  Ive been trying to sell my wide glide for sometime, and I had it listed at KBB what they said for book and Ive had no takers.  Its really hard to know exactly what your bike is worth especially if it is a 06 or older because before then it was worth a good chunk of money and now they are kinda worthless.  Just from personal experience.  Makes you think twice about selling so you dont have to take a huge hit on it.

KBB.

I was told a long time ago to be sure you like what you have before you start putting all kinds of custom stuff on.  Why? Because rarely if ever will you recoop your expenses from cutomization.  And think about keeping it for a long time.  (Although the moco gives off mixed messages when they have dealers who will not work on HD's after a certain year.)

I have a 1983 FL since new.

There is no real gauge. Those magazines that have prices in them are no better then what someone "wants" for their bike. Throw market value out the window. Those days of low supply and demand are gone with Harley. You can put a price on your bike but it comes down to what someone is willing to pay. That is the real vaue of the bike. Buy it , ride it, and don't think you will make money off of it. reality sets in quickly. I will ride mine till it falls apart.

KBB is not even close to what bikes are selling these days.  Go to ebay and see how many auctions end with no bidders or "reserve not met."

Sure, you can list your bike for what the KBB book suggests but you won't find any takers.

Most sellers are just unrealistic.  As someone stated above, a Harley today, like most vehicles is a depreciating asset.  That wasn't the case seven years ago or more.  High demand, low supply.  Prices rise.  Supply has met or exceeded demand for a few years now.  Prices fall.

Many try to sell at the price to pay their loan off.  All that freight, prep, $3000 of chrome goodies, tax, motorclothes all rolled into their loan.  A year later, now someone sells and asks for $1000 more than they bought it.  And there they sit on ebay with no buyers and reserves never met.

"But it has this and that, Corbin seat, Kuryakyn this, Rinehart that, dynoed, tuned, forged chrome wheels...look at all the extras you get!"  Many potential buyers dont care for the skull package, fur seat, and titanium blinker buttons.  Your accessories are only worth as much as it means to the buyer.

My suggestions:

Your bike is worth more to you than any person.  Keep it.
If you're going to sell, price it realistically.  Leave emotion off the table.
Accessories are worth very little to the prospective buyer.  Don't count on them to make the deal.
Advertise on ebay.  You'll know exactly what you bike is worth in a few days.

The market is in the tank right now, so it's a buyers market.  Most guys want to get most of their money back for extras on the bike but, you would be lucky to get a 1/3 back.  Bike prices are also priced differently by the region you live in.  Another big reason for price is the popularity of the model you wish to buy.  I want to sell my panhead but, most don't understand (or don't care) the cost to do a restoration.  My signature says it all.......

I paid $16k for my CVO Deuce.  The NADA book value was $15.5k.  The KBB value was considerably higher but my credit union loans 100% of NADA for Harleys.  I thought the market was a bit higher than what I paid so the book value didn't bother me.  But I think you have to take loan value into account when setting a price.

I think time is more important than price.

here's the context of the below thoughts:
-your bike is LIKE NEW.
-low miles (under 5~10k)
-minimal mods: no chrome skulls or $3000 worth of "doo dads"
-it has the minimum performance mods: Air Cleaner, Tune, Pipes
-other mods consist of FUNCTION: quick disco luggage rack, backrest, windscreen.

if you are in a rush, you will keep dropping your price till someone will buy, even though it is NOT what they want, and they will not pay top dollar. rush = you lose.

but you put your price out there, and wait, and if someone just HAS to have your bike, then you can get your asking price (within reason, of course)

i fully consider the cost of "minimum performance mods" when buying a bike.
there is no reason to buy new: pay freight, prep, tax, doc fees,
and then $1200 for minimum performance mods.

when you can buy almost new, and get that stuff with it.

My 2006 Road King is listed for sale at $14k in the FS forum, and it's exactly as above.
minimal mods, clean, well maintained, and if someone wants it, they will know $14 is a good price, if not, they can pay MSRP  + + +

i can wait to sell my RK, and I can wait to buy a Ultra.
what i can't do is "distress sell" my RK for $12k and lose my behind to get a "different" bike.

what's really different from one bike to the next that's worth losing, say $2500?
nothing. it's more about YOU than about the buyer.

my .02, can i get my change back?

I've had 5 Harley's in the last 3 years-bought all used from private sellers via e-bay and Cycle Trader...riding them, keeping them nice and not doing much of anything to them.  I sold them all at a profit-for more than waht I paid anywhere from $300-$500 more.

My 92 Sportster was cherry-paid $7200-sold $7500

My Heriage Softail Classic and Ultra Glide both sold for $300 and $400 more than I paid...

I've been lucky, found buyers that wanted them and had the $ (All were cash deals) and I live in the DC area so maybe folks have more disc. income????

Now, I just bought a beautiful-Orig, Owner, 25k Orig. miles Electra Glide Sport (FLHS).  I paid $8k.  I think I topped out.  I really liked and wanted the bike so I paid it.  He wanted $9700.  If I sell, I'll prob. be able to get back the same or less by $500 or so...I bet. I could ask $9500 OBO and see what hits.

Bottom line is the buyer must want the bike to pay a higher price...but still cant be priced to outta wack.

I bought mine, it's paid for-I'm keepin and ridin this one for sometime!  It is a buyers market right now.  Goodluck.

I just bought a road king from a guy, i think i paid top dollar. i found a ton of 06 road kings for as cheap as 12500, but this bike is worth the extra money to me, tons of aftermarket parts, factory limited ed paint set, low miles and its pristine.

its hard to put a consistant value on these things, i was willign to may more for this bike because i love how it looks and its kinda unique.

I am willing to "pay up" for low mileage, well maintained bikes, especially with factory warranty remaining. You can't register an out of state bike in CA that has less than 7500 miles, so it limits my market. I just paid $1k over market for an '03 Anniv. Heritage Springer because it was 10 minutes from my home, had 2500 miles, and 2 years remaining on an extended warranty! I doubt I'll get my money back, but this will be a fun ride for a few years, and it was what I wanted. On the other hand, I bought a "loaded" 2000 RKC 3 weeks ago, and was offered $2500 more than I paid! I turned it down, because I love the bike and really want to ride it. In the end, the "market" will determine price. Not KBB or NADA. And I disagree with those who will "wait for a better price" for their bikes. While you wait, you pay for insurance, registration, etc. And the bike gets older! It's going to take a very long time before we see the supply/demand conditions that kept HD prices high.

My advice: If you no longer use or enjoy the bike, SELL IT! Take the hit, and move on to the next one, that you will hopefully buy at a good price and enjoy more.

I agree w/ most of the people here.
1. Never be in a hurry to sell your ride. If you are odds are you will take a hit.
2. The next owner may not be into custom mods so just because you spent $10k on it doesn't mean your bike is worth $10k more
3) Maintenance records are the key. If you change the oil yourself keep the receipt from when you bought the oil. Keep a maintenance log if you do the upkeep yourself. How long did it take you to change the fluids? If you have time to change it, take the time to write down the mileage, date & brand of fluid.

I bought my 03 Heritage last year from a lady that was selling it.
She was the original owner, 5400 miles, bike had been lowered & had upgraded exhaust w/ the original exhaust included & the anniversary cover. I paid $13k for it. She wanted $15k for it.
I told her what I would pay. I said you want $15k then its not the bike for me. I had been looking for 2 years & was prepared to look longer.

4) Be positive. Memories & sentimental value do not have resale value.
5) Check the market & the bank. See what bikes are selling for & call a couple banks & see what they will loan on it. Doesn't do much good to sell a bike for more than the bank will loan on it (unless you find a buyer w/ a suitcase full of cash!)

My credit union uses www.nada.com that said I paid $5k more than they said my 2004 Fatboy was worth...  At the end of the day something is only worth what soemone else will give you for it.
