Help!!! My 78 1/2 troublehead has a tranny leak I cannot stop. Its leaking between the tranny and the inner primary. I have tried to find the seal that rides on the inside of the sproket but cannot find one in ANY parts shop! I tried to make a seal, but no luck, not the right thickness or some other issue. The one I took off literally fell apart so I cannot get the measurements and I am tired of taking my primary cover and inner primary off to try to fit another seal. My tranny has a piss hole on the inside of the case which is causing the gear oil to leak out and it gets a little hairy since the oil drops right in front of my rear tire!!!

Anyone know where I can locate the seal? Hell the parts catalogs I have say its a damn $1.50 part and NOBODY has one! Any ideas please let me know...

It sounds to me like you are describing the main drive gear shaft seal. It's that skinny little seal that rides between the mainshaft and the main drive gear. I see it as part # 12022. This number is from my parts book that only goes up to 1976 but I'm pretty sure that is the number for your part. The dealer, an indie shop or one of the mail order parts companies can help you out.
They are are difficult to install since they are so thin. Ideally, you can make a tool from a piece of thin walled conduit or something similar to push it in evenly. If you don't have/make a tool, you might need to get three or four of 'em to finally get one to go in straight and not mangle it. The other thing you could do is get one of the sprocket nuts with a seal in it, it prevents the same leak without having to fight with the skinny little seal. While you are at it, you might consider replacing the main drive gear oil seal which is the large seal behind the tranny sprocket.
I don't understand what you mean by "piss hole on the inside of the case." Are you referring to the same leak or another leak?

I found a note I wrote to myself when I started looking for the parts and the part numbers I found are in the Custom Chrome book. The part numbers are 25103 and 25323 and 54069. They list three different parts for the same seal. Mine is a 1978 1/2 Troublehead - so if anyone has these seals PLEASE write to me....

The main trans sealfor 1978-79 is HD P/N 35230-39 Call J&P at 1-800-397-4844 Their P/N is 6200310 When you put this seal back in put red locktite on the outer surface before pressing it in obviously clean the transarea first duh The seal P/N 37741-67 is for late 1979 thru 81 Good luck

Red loc tite? To make sure it does not spin, seals better that gasket seal?

Probably both. Do you use red on the main shaft oil seal, and the main

drive gear oil seal?

Not usually just the big main seal The seals I use 1979 and down have a metal outer The seals after late 1979 and up are all rubber
