Maybe it doesn't matter, but before I try to purchase a copy of PS again, I'd like input on what to get? I've never done photoshop anything before. I have done basic photo editing with Microsoft photo editor, etc.
I TRIED to buy a legit copy of Photoshop 7.0 (used) from a used vendor on Amazon, but what I got was a scratched disk with no serial number to install it with. Of course, he has a bouncing email address, and 5 negative feedbacks in the last week for scamming people.
So, I get to try again, (while fighting to get my money back) and I'd like to keep it under $100 if possible. I"m not a power-user, but sure would like to do some to of the cool sig photo work you guys do.
What versions do you all use? Any recommendations on the best bang-for-the-buck? I'd use version 2.0 if you guys thought it would do the job ok... Thank you.

I use version 7.0, bought it used from a friend for $75. I think most of the folks on here use either version 6.0 or 7.0 . You could check on e-bay for used copies, I belive they were mostly going for around $75 just be sure to check out the persons feedback rating and read comments. Lee
Personally, I would find a school kid (or borrow one) and just buy the educational version of the product. Great price and you know it's legit -- and upgradable.
i have been looking into this also...i love what u guys can do with this software. just wondering if photoshop elements 6 is what i should be buying? with my student discount its only like $60 but i wanna make sure it is the right software, thanks
I have never used or seen Elements, but from prior discussions on here, it's just the "essential elements" of photoshop and not as useful as full version 6.0 or 7.0.
I have 6.0, 7.0 and CS3 Extended. I paid about $100 each for 6.0 and 7.0 on ebay, and then got the newest CS3 Ext.
There's not enough difference in 6.0 ($100) and CS3 Extended ($995) to notice with what we do on here. 6.0 will do it all.
I don't know how much of a discount you could get in a student version of CS3, but I can't imagine it would be as low as 6.0 would be.
Google Gimp 2 and download the latest version. It does almost the same thing as Photoshop, and is a free download, at least it was when I got it. Check it out, it works well.

The problem we've had with Gimp users is that we can't help them. We have lots of tut's now in the "photoshopping 101" sticky and we discuss everything in "photoshop-eze."
This has evolved into a teaching and learning forum which has been great for me. I learned photoshop right here. (As much as I know, that is.)
Imho the 101 sticky at the top of this forum's main page is worth the price of admission - $100 for photoshop.
I have nothing against Gimp other than that. It just isn't as universal as photoshop, in daily use.
