Oral arguments in the case are scheduled on March 18, and the LEAA brief is just one of 46 that have been filed on the side of seeking affirmation that the Second Amendment does, indeed, document a right for individuals to own guns in the United States.
Quote:
"Numerous surveys show that firearms are used (usually without a shot needing to be fired) for self-defense at least 97,000 times a year, and probably several hundred thousands times a year. The anti-crime effects of citizen handgun ownership provide enormous benefits to law enforcement, because there are fewer home invasion emergencies requiring an immediate police response, and because the substantial reductions in rates of burglary, assault, and other crimes allow the police and district attorneys to concentrate more resources on other cases and on deterrence."
"Guns save lives," the brief said. "In the hands of law-abiding citizens, guns provide very substantial public safety benefits. In all 50 states – but not the District – it is lawful to use firearms for defense against home invaders. The legal ownership of firearms for home defense is an important reason why the American rate of home invasion burglaries is far lower than in countries which prohibit or discourage home handgun defense."
This is an interesting read on Law Enforcement voicing their support of the Second Amendment in regards to the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court decision on the Washington D.C.gun ban.
RE: Who'da thunk? Guns best crime deterrent after all
I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to hear what the Supreme Court has to say. It's pretty scary thinking about what will happen if this goes the wrong way especially with the choices we have in the upcoming election.

Potential victim A is unarmed and Potential victim B is armed. To me, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out which one is gonna become a true victim. Of course, if the bad guy went after "B", that may be good, too - one less bad guy to make others his victim.

Welcome to Montana where almost everybody is armed. There are very few murders here committed with firearms. We shoot back. I believe the same holds true in most states where legal gun ownership by the citizenry is prevalant
The only people who fear gun ownership by law abiding citizens are those who have bad things planned for us.

An Armed Society is a polite Society. I really hope the Supreme Court rulesfor Gun Owners.Look at the other countries in the world that have disarmed their citizens. Look at their high crime rates and murders being committed. Every citizen has a right to protect himself or herself from an criminal assault .The police are only good after something happens and then it is too late .Every lawbiding citizen should have right to carry a firearm for protection.
