Beginning July 1  the Florida DMV will require that anyone purchasing, or titleing a motorcycle will be required to have an M class on their D.L..  It will also be required that anyone who applies for an M class on their D.L. will be requred to complete a 24 hour motorcycle safety course.   The cost of these courses run about $200 and up.  The Florida DMV will no longer be a testing facility, and new applicants must present a certificate of completion of the course.

This also means that anyone who purchases a bike as a gift, or co-signs a mororcycle loan will also be required to complete this course, and have the M class on their license.

Okay, so maybe the 24 hour course aint such a bad requirement for a newbie rider, but the rest is a crock of sh*t.

yep, that's why I finally got my endorsement  a few months ago....Been riding off and on for quite a while without one and figured I better get it before the rush.  You can bet the MSF courses and harley riders edge course are gonna get more expensive.

I think overall it's a great idea.  There are way to many teenagers, without proper training, out there on crotch rockets, some of which I'm sure were purchased by clueless parents.

And I Live In Florida.

I think it's a pretty good idea myself, I've always thought that you shouldn't be able to buy a motorcycle if you don't have a motorcycle endorsement.

Beg to differ with you.  Over half the motorcycle fatalaties are single vehicle accidents and half of all motorcycle fatalaties the rider has been drinking or is legally drunk.  All you have to do is go to the Harley videos or YouTube and type in motorcycle crash and you will some mighty stupid fatal stunts.

As I stated in my post, not a bad idea for a newbie rider. But I dont agree that forcing a loan co-signer, or a co-owner who does not even ride,  to complete a $200  safety course and get an M classification is reasonable.

Better yet, take it one step further and require all first time applicants for a D.L. to complete a 40 hour safe drivers course.
This will make people learn to drive, rather than just learning to pass a test.

Although that statement is certainly true, so is the fact that many new middle aged and older riders are adding dramatically to the death statistics.  They need training as much or more than the squids.

I'm not going to doubt you barjbar but the only friends of mine that I lost have been by cages and thank god I can only count them on 1 hand. If I'm wrong I stand corrected. Ride safe my friend...

I think that the mandatory class is good.
I think you should have to have a the motorycle endorsement to buy a bike.
I do think there are some circustances where it shouldn't be required like said if it is a gift and it can somehow be proven or just a cosigner and one of you have it or are going to.

I know this Kid that has a crotch rocket and he bought it because while in his first year of college he got in a lot of trouble and they took his car away so he want and bought a bike.

There should also be a mandatory class on sex, too many folks don't do it right and end up f**n it up.
If you don't know how to screw keep yer dick in your pants.
If you need to be forced to learn how to ride by some other ****s rules, stay off my road or at least stay in a cage.
Having a license to operate your ride is more than reasonable, and showing some degree of competency is ok, rest of all that shit just is-shit. There are folks who have absolutely no business behind the wheel of a big truck, there are folks who have no business behind the wheel of a car, and there are folks who should never be allowed to get on a bike, but big daddy cant do anything right or we could stop all the miscreant mongrel inbred syphilitic morons from breeding but obviously THAT hasn't worked. Our government spends way too much of my money trying to save us from ourselves, please let natural selection weed out the rejects instead of electing them.   Naw..I'm just kidding, I really WANT more laws rules regulations and a camera in my terlet to make sure I do EVERYTHING right, down the the proper wipe of the old hairy yellow ass.

For what it's worth, I agree with what Florida is doing - as a Florida resident.

For the Mexican semi thing... There is a tremendous amount of legislature still pending on this and furthermore border rights were only granted to one trucking company on each side of the fence.  I believe though that they have a little more flex in their side of the contract as far as contractors for the one company goes.

Safety course isn't a bad idea, but $200!  Luckily here in PA it's still free.  I rode on a permit for 4-5 years before I finally took the test and got my actual license.

I brought my first bike when I was 18. It was a 1970 honda 500. I did not have a endorsement on my license. I got my permit. Rode the bike for one season, and then took the BMV test and got my endorsement. If things would have been the way FL wants to go I could have never brought the bike to learn how to ride.

How can a newbie learn how to ride if they can't buy a bike to learn on? I'm just saying that all.

I took the MSF class and I take the ERC every year. My Florida MC endorsement is a priviledge, not a right.

I have this theory about incompetence being rampant.

Everyone here makes some good points but here is one to consider also. This is why I think the whole thing is a joke. There is a licensed MSF course given in my area that uses 125cc bikes to give the course on. If you take the course and pass you get the M endorsement. I maintain that being tested on a 125cc scooter should not quailify you for the endorsement. I know people that have taken this course and then jumped right on bigger Harleys and such. A 125cc scooter is not a motorcycle.

True CaptainBob. I think the problem is the cost of providing various types of motorcycles as learner bikes. Even with 125cc they get to
learn and controls, where to look, something about stopping and turning.
Maybe have them get a permit on the 125 and get tested for a full ticket on the bike they buy.    My recollection is that the process in the UK is quite involved---but I don't know the accident statistics versus
USA,

Does Florida or any other state require a drivers safety course to get a license to drive a car?

Let's see.....you need a liscense to drive a car (and nobody bitches), to drive a big rig (and nobody bitches), special endorsement to drive HazMat (and nobody bitches), where's the problem with requiring  the M endorsement for a scoot?  Not really a fan of the co-signer requirement though.

Other than the co-signer thing, how is Florida screwing anyone.  I think everyone should be required to show that they are competent to operate whatever, be it a semi, family car or motorcycle, and should have the proper license to do so.

Pilots have to have an endorsement for every class they fly, and they damn sure pay for the instruction to get each class.  I'm not even opposed to all people getting a driver's license being required to take a driver's ed course.

Here in n.y. you need to take a road test which consists of a 1/2 mile course, as such...
there are 2- 22' circles side by side...like a figure 8.. do a left turn 3 times, then a right turn 3 times.. make a figure 8 -3 times...drive to a stop sign, then a stop light,, then back to starting point,,end of test... if you put your foot down at any time other then the stopsign and red light you fail...
This is the state test.. the MSF test is way better. but cost you 3 days of schooling a riding on a 250 cc (supplied) and about $300 pesos..oops dollars! After that and you pass...(could fail also)
but they teach ya how to drive safely and defensively! hope that helps..I ride with the local HOG club here and we have yearly volunteer re-fresher courses at a discounted fee...which you get you a $50 gift certificate also for H.D. merchindise.. total cost $35...not a bad deal...hope that helps...later,,ryd

Nothin' wrong with education in my book, LOLOLOL!!!

Cages need education too though for motos.

Around here, I see 15 year old girls wheelin' around 9000 pound SUV's talkin' on their cell phones while sippin' on their latte's.

Makes me real nervous, and I get around em' as quick as I can, and usually leave em' something to remember me by.
