Default Harley Reduced Effort Clutch Kit

I just installed the kit on my 04 Road King and wow, what an improvement! A couple of tips that will save you hours of installation time:

1. A tech at the local dealer told me that they install the spring without removing the primary cover. Simply remove the derby cover and pull the old one out. You will have to spring it a little bit to get it through the hole. Same goes for installing the new one. Spring in right through the hole and save yourself time and a primary cover gasket!

2. When installing the new ball ramps, it is necessary to move the exhaust to get all the bolts out of that little cover. If your bike is like mine, it's really difficult to do! Simply remove the chrome heat shields on your exhaust, stick a pry bar behind the exhaust and pry it back less than 1/4 inch. That's all you need to get the bolts out. You don't even have to loosen the exhaust bolts. This will deform your exhaust pipe ever so slightly, but it is not noticeable once the heat shields are back on. I did the whole kit in 30 minutes.

I'm sure someone will criticize me for "bending" the exhaust pipes, however no one will ever notice! Save yourself some time as well as some cursing!

The reduced effort ramp is aGREAT mod.

It's a really easy job (especially for someone who uses your suggestions), and makes an enormous difference when riding.

Good post... & let us know how you like it.

dealer talked me into the reduce effort ramp on my bike with the SE heavy clutch spring, they do them all the time,I couldnt beleive how light the clutch lever felt compared to the real stiff pull it had wearing the SE clutch spring, almost like it wasnt connected to anything, first time I squeezed the lever,it was instantly slambed to the bars like it wasnt hooked up,bet it takes me some getting use to again, lol should be alot more user friendly in traffic than the hard pull of just the SE heavy spring

Wow, just 2 posts. Silent but deadly- thanks bro. I just ordered the kit. Does the clutch ramp cover have to move out at all or can it just slide forward? I have clearance to get the rear fastener out ('02 Road King) but I was wondering if you can just slide the cover forward past the exhaust (without pulling the cover away from the tranny case) or do you have to pull the cover out and away?

Thanks for the info you already posted!

The clutch release cover assy. needs to be removed completly, there is not enough room to slide it out. There is a large snap-ring to be removed to install the new ramp.

Interesting read, on a project I'm considering doing before the ride to Myrtle in a few weeks. I've read that the spring can, and can't, be removed with the primary cover in place. Has anyone actually removed and replaced the spring through the primary cover without damaging anything? What did the instructions with the kit say? Appeciate any help. Ride safe.
