First let me say that I appreciate all of your's help with my previous posts. This community is by far the most helpful I have been in.

Now to my problem. I have what is becoming a very perplexing oil leak. After riding I get a nice large brown puddle of oil on the left hand side back by the primary drain plug. Here's the thing though. I have replaced the drain plug and the primary's gasket three times (this last time I put a bunch of gasket sealant on the gasket to make sure it wasn't gapping through a uneven point, if there was one). The leak has gone down a bit from what it used to be. Now its only really there after I drive, prior it was there even when the bike was just sitting there.

So it would appear that I had two problems. One was the primary gasket and where ever else the other problem is.

Now I have checked what seems like everything and I can't seem to find where the rest of the oil is coming from. I have already replaced the sprocket seal (which is on the other side, but I thought what the hell). It looks like the oil is coming from the back side of the primary near the top. Obviously the bike leans to left when propped up with the stand so the oil could be originally leaking from the right hand side and just draining over to the left when sitting. But I'm just out of idea's. I know that there must be quite a bit of oil coming from somewhere while I am driving because when I get off the bike and look my rear wheel has oil all over it.

This oil leak is the last and mos perplexing thing I have ever gone through.

It could be leaking from where the electric starter bolts up to the case.

Is your primary vent hose hooked up? It should run down from the top of the primary to in front of the rear swingarm. If the primary is overfull it will puke oil out of that vent.

You might also check the primary cover screws for oil.

I realize that this thread is old and I'm sure no one really has any interest, bbbbuuutttt.......I belive I fixed it. At the very least I have severly limited the amount of oil leaking to a few drops.

I spent the afternoon replacing all of the oil lines, starter housing gasket, and I sealed the transmission and primary drain plugs with threadlocker. Most of the oil appeared to be coming from either the starter housing or the return feed to the oil tank. Once I pulled the battery tray and starter out there it was a substantial pool of oil and sludge right on top of the tranny/crank case.

I cleaned it all down, after replacing everything, with some gunk just to see if where if any it leaks from. Refilled all the fluid and ran it for a few minutes and parked it in the garage for the night. So far no leaking.

Thanks for the update. Once mine is completely back together, I've got a few leaks of my own I hope to have fixed.

your deffinitly going to need the beer troubleshooting method you provided me when you do it. I don't care what vehicle you have, finding the origin's of an oil leak is the hardest thing ever!

Yea, with that method, I don't mind so much when the oil drips in my eye from a new spot while looking at another area.

I once had a leak where the starter bolts to the back of the primary. The starter kept coming loose, and I'd have to remove the primary cover to tighten it. The last time it happened (4 or 5 years ago), I tightened those starter bolts with a cheater bar and it hasn't come loose again.
