Seems like the float bowl floats would stop any extra gas from entering the carb (mine's a Mikuni). All my other bikes that had the petcock with on/off/res, I could just leave it on, no problem. Since I've had this bike, I've always made it a practice turning it off, although I did forget to turn it on once, heh heh, ran fine for about a minute.
