Default EVO Industries 30 tooth engine sprocket installed

Very straight forward install, left the three "flat springs" in the rotor that actuate the compensator that I removed. I replaced the primary chain tensioner as it had some pretty deep grooves in the shoe (HD really gets you on this, cant buy just the shoe). Buttoned it up started it up and heard "chain slap". Shut it down, pulled the primary cover, and bumped the tensioner one tooth, was enough to take the slap out.

Tip is that the chain tension has to be almost perfect with this setup. Now, just waiting for weather to test ride it...

Will be looking forward to test results. Do you think that the slapping was maybe caused from a new tight chain, with a few tight spots in it,more so than adjustment? Just curious. Would like to try the 30 tooth myself but no dam IDS for the softails so far. Don't think I'll pursue it until I can add some cushion into the drive.

Suprised me whenI fired it up and heard it as it appeared the chain was tight enough when installed and I figure the auto tensioner would get it right. The tensioner didnt "ratchet" up enough when installed, and that might have been due to a chain with some tight spots. Just snicked it up one notch and all is good. I will post driveability resultswhen the damn snow melts.

I do know one thing, I will never hear the dreaded compensator clunk any more upon start up

Dam clunk. I seemed to have lost that sound as well since the shim we talked about a few months ago in the comp. Softer startups with the Tmax may have quieted as well. Looking forward to your observations on this unit.

I made a .032 washer to put in behind the springpack. Spring pack was slightly weak and knocking when taking off in first gear from a standstill. In my case the comp unit itself was not loose on the crank but could have used a bit more positive pressure on the cam tip to gear fit to keep it from rattling. Loose comp on crank and weak spring pack will produce the same sound but a weak spring pack won't cause damage where as a loose comp on the crank is highly destructive especially to the rotor splines of the altenator.

Would the shim have to vary depending on the fit of the Comp?.
Cheers,Graham.

Not a lot of room to play with. Going thicher will reduce the rotation in the cam and the pack will bottom out too soon. But then again the same problem exists with a weak spring pack. You might as well have an impact wrench on the crank at that point. It's just too boarder line for function, with it's marginal spring pack. I have to wonder how may crank problems are cause from this POS stuck on the end of the crank. If I had an IDS for my softail I'd go with the 30 tooth none comp and trash it, once and for all.

It is a straight drive sprocket that replaces the comensator.....like the old sporties
