Looks great. Were they easy to install? I put the skull one on to my bike last spring. It was a bit of a trick with the size of my meathooks, but I managed it. I've read of problems with the LEDs burning out or fritzing after sitting in cold weather. I'm hoping mine it still working 100% when I pull the bike out in a couple of weeks. The flush mounts are much more subtle than the skull ones. Very nice.

The tank caps look really good - one of the things I plan to do sometime - maybe this winter.

What I am really curious about is what kind of pipes do you have on that Rocker?   how do they sound - loud?  Any where did you get them, install yourself?  Finally, what'd they run ya?   Seriously considering upgrading the pipes on my rocker.  My primary concerns are 1) dont want to lose any performance  2)  dont want very loud, booming sound getting me tickets or my neighbors pissed at me every morning - I leave earlier than most.  Thanks in advance for taking time to consider my questions and concerns.

G'day,

Yeah like you I just bought the flush mount gas caps to go with the spun aluminium face speedo/tach I just put on. Thought it was a much cleaner and more authentic (and less tacky) look than the thundermax digital speedo and the skull gas cap and fuel guage.

I have already put the gas cap on but have yet to even look at the fitting instructions for the fuel gauge.

Do you have to take the tank off to install the fuel guage?

The tank does not have to come off to install the fuel gauge, read the instructions, they are a little vauge but correct.

The flush caps look really great.  Do the LEDs work well enough for you to see easily?  That was my only hesitation in putting them on my bike.

I have the flush caps on my Rocker and the LEDs are bright enough to see clearly in daylight.

The LEDs work great...for a while.  I had the flush mount LED guage on my RKC...had to replace the guage 5 times in one riding season (about 7 months) because LEDs kept burning out.  My wife has the flush mount guage on her Heritage (installed the same time as the RKC)...had to replace her guage 4 times in the same riding season because the LEDs would just stop working.  Don't know if they are still working on the Heritage because it is still in storage in the garage (the latest guage was on the bike about two weeks before storing); the RKC was traded in so I don't have to worry about replacing the guage six times in less than one year.

Good luck with them.

flyburch,

Thanks for the info on the pipes as a starting point - will now being research on when, where, listen to them, etc.....just can't get over how nice they look installed on your rocker and will take your word for it that they are not too loud.

cheeshead,

Can't believe your experience with the guage LEDs being so unreliable, hope they are covered under warrantee.  Were they installed by a HD dealer?  If so, you'd think the HD mothership would get a handle on fixing the source of the problem or it'll bankrupt em - that failure rate is absolutely pitiful!

Anyone else have any experience with the guage LEDs failing or failing so frequently?  Like to get a second opinion before I abort my planned purchase & install.

TIA,
rleather

Yes, all replacements have been under warranty.  Yes, all installed by the dealer.  The dealer has taken them off the display shelves and put them in the back room.  They will only sell them if someone begs for them.  They will discourage anyone from buying them because 9 out of every 10 bikes that they install them on, have gone back at least once (most 2, 3, or more times) for a replacement due to LEDs not working.  They have notified the MoCo of the problem and were told it was a known issue.  I would not be surprised if the dealer stops installing them because the MoCo only reimburses the dealer for the defective part and the dealership has to cover all the labor charges in house...they lose money every time they install one and replace it.

I'm leaving the guage on my wife's bike because it does look better than the stock guage.  It will just be a blank chrome cover when all the LEDs stop working.  Even though they look great, I would never buy another one due to the fact that there are so many known issues with them.

It is cold here; but, I don't believe that is the problem.  They were installed last May after it warmed up.  All of them were replaced between May and early November of last year.

Seems like it could be a common problem.  Check out these threads.  Seems there are a few other people that have had the same problems.  The problem with the LED comes up a couple of times in these threads.  I'm sure there are more.  Some people are not having problems.

Cheese Head,

Thanks for the two links, we may have accidently stumbled onto something - After reading all the posts in both threads, I learned that there are two brands - Kuryakyn or HD brand.  If everyone that has problems with their LED guages would PLEASE post which brand, perhaps we could isolate the problems to a single brand.  If it turns-out that the problems can be associated with a single brand, we could all save a lot of time, money, and frustration AND get the good looks of the flush mount guages.

Wow, I just realized the true power of this forum -  We as an HD owner community, can all make much better purchase decisions based on collective experience.  Rewarding certain vendors and steering clear of others will, in time, weed-out the vendor brands which are junk.

I never heard of anyone having problems with the Kuryakyn.  It seems the problem is isolated to the H-D LEDs.

I was considering those flush mounts too.  How do the LED dim during evening hours?  The catalog mentions a self dimming feature, but after all these probs mentioned, I'd hate to ride around with a set of LED lights shining in my face at night.

Installed the HD flush mount cap and LED gauge 3 weeks ago. Very happy, slightly off gauge reading as it's calibrated for the Rocker and not my Deuce, but no problem with the LED's burning out (yet), they are fine.

Nice and bright in the day (but not to the point of distraction), they dim at night so still very easy to read but not blinding. Love the way the both look like flat chrome and then the gauge lights up with ignition.

Saw on another thread here (deuce bigelow??) that the recent rocker part is a newer design and problems were with the older general softail (except FXSTD) part... could be wrong here though.

The flush gauges were the first thing I added when I got my Rocker at the end of February.  As other posts have stated, the LED's worked great...for a while.  About 4 weeks after installing, the LED showing that the fuel pump is working burned out or for some other reason just quit working.  The LED's showing the fuel level all work so I haven't screwed with changing it and won't until one of them goes too.

For looks, they are great.  Clean up the tank and the LED's are bright (when working) during the day and just right at night.

Were those HD brand and covered by warranty?  Never heard of the fuel pump indicator...  Still trying to decide.  I love the way they look just don't want my new bike in the shop all the time.

They are HD brand and should be covered under warranty.  I need to check the box to make sure it is a year warranty but I won't fart with having them replaced unless the fuel indicator LED's go...not worth the hassle.  I've already realized that I trust the odomotor for gauging fuel in the tank more than I do the floater or whatever the hell is installed at the factory.  The low fuel indicator on my bike comes on with almost 2 gallons left in the tank.  Within the first couple of weeks I realized I needed to fill up, run 100 miles, and fill up again.  This easily gave me my MPG and now I know when to fill up.  As for the bike being in the shop, I don't see that being the case because of the flush cap and gauge.  They were very easy to install and would be just as easy to remove and replace with a new set.  The look great and even with the LED problems I'd buy them again.

i installed mine also about 4 or 5 weeks ago also. i think they are awesome and make the tank look great, mine are the hd brand, so far no problems. was not that hard to do, i have done all of my own upgrades, i cant see paying that high labor charge for most of the upgrades, with a service manual it makes alot of these upgrades eaiser. if you get the service manual make sure you get the latest version part # 99482-08A. it has to have the A at the end for the correct manual that has the rocker stuff in it.
good luck with any upgrades you do and if i can help just ask me and ill do what i can to help. if i can ever figure out how to post pics you can see my progress

Thanks emsley3, gadawgsfan, & flyburch.  Based on you guys' recommendation that you'd "buy them again", I will get off the fence, take a chance, and ask my HD dealer to order them for me in time to install while in for the 1000 mi. svc.  I did order the Rocker Svc Manual.  Once done, will post an updated pic - probably towards the end of this month or early next month.
