You can't go wrong with a Kimber, Bryan.
It's one of the times you do get what you pay for, IMO.
I'd say the model for you depends on what your primary use for the pistol will be, CCW, paper puncher, etc.

I bought a stainless Ultra Carry II for something easy to carry. I love the gun, it is small enough to carry under a shirt but shoots like a dream. I am way impressed with it. In fact I may buy a full size kimber.

Bryan,

I think the Kimber is about the best off the shelf 1911 you can buy. I have a Pro-Carry II Special Editionin the 4" bbl and just bought an Eclipse II Custom Shopin 5" bbl with target sights. Both are great shooting guns and very accurate. I also have a Colt Degfender in 3" bbl, so I have a 1911 in all three configurations.

I realy like the little Colt, but if I were doing it again I would go with one of the 3" Kimber Ultras.

Bill

Several weeks ago I actually went shopping with a Kimber in mind. I looked and handled several of them and then I noticed in an adjacent display case a fine looking black pistol that kind of resembled a 1911. In fact, the grip angle is the same as a 1911.

I later found out that it was designed with the 1911 in mind from two American military pistol gurus to replace the current 9MM pistols. Well, to make a long story short, I bought that pistol and it has become my favorite .45ACP already. The operation, ergonomics and accuracy are almost indescribable; one word – awesome. I mounted a Streamlight on the Picatinny 1913 rail for “what goes bump in the night”. I also love using my index finger to release the magazine as opposed to my thumb.

Heckler & Koch Model HK45

I’m now saving up for the compact model - HK45C.

I bought one of the very first Kimbers available and find it's very nice. It would only run well with "Colt" magazines....must have been the little horse. Very good pistol for the money. The hood is not so tightly fitted to the breech/bolt face as some custom pistols, but good enough unless you're extemely anal. Again , good value for the money.

If I was looking now, I'd have to consider the new Taurus 1911 that is machined from forged billet and not cast. It also seems to be an excellent pistol for the dollar. Perhaps also the new Smith and Wesson 1911 as well.

I've shot Kimber and Springfield 1911's, and I don't think you can go wrong with either. When I was 1911 shopping a few years ago I bought the Springfield "Fully Loaded" 1911 and have been very pleased with it, great gun right out of the box.

One of my handguns is a Kimber Ultra Elite. It is the best handgun I've ever owned. Better than my Wilson, my Sigs (all gone now), my Glock, myHK (all gone now), my 1911 S70, my Springfield....

The compact frame .45 is a better shooting pistol than anything else I've fired.
